Eric was born in Penang Island, Penang, Malaysia to an American father, Jason Morgan and a Malaysian Chinese mother, Jessica Chai. The couple was living in Penang at the time of his birth. They were planning to travel back to Kuching so his mother could be with her family during the delivery but she gave birth to him in Penang a few days before their scheduled departure. When Eric was 11 years old, the family moved to London due to Michael's work. Eric was named by his parents after Eric Cantona and Michael Owen. Eric's paternal cousin is the USWNT legend; Alex Morgan while his maternal cousin is Malaysia National team captain; Dion Cools.
