Chapter 13
Chloe
Slowly, Chloe's eyes focused on a figure sitting in front of her, arms wrapped around their knees. She realised it was Newfeld. He was looking at her, a wistfulness in his eyes.
Chloe tried to move her hands, but she couldn't. Her hands were tied. Her legs were crossed in front of her. She was sitting against a wall. The rest of the room was empty, except for a window and a metal door. She couldn't see what was outside the window, and the door was closed.
"How are you feeling?" he asked. Chloe shook her head. "Woozy. My head hurts. My whole body hurts, actually," she replied. She realised that she sounded like she was confiding in him, and quickly backtracked. "But what do you care? All you have done till now is kidnap me and make me pass out."
She knew that he was, in fact, concerned for her health. It was written all over his face. He smirked slightly in response. "I have been like that, haven't I?" he asked. "Let's start with introductions." He scooted a little closer, and stuck his hand out. "My name is-"
"I already know what your name is, doofus. I was assigned to kill you," she remarked. His eyes widened. "Darren Newfeld, innit?"
He nodded his head, his hair falling on his face. He pushed it back. "And I'm guessing you know my name?" Chloe asked.
He nodded. "Chloe Mayra Garnett." She grinned at the sound of her full name. "At least, that's what they told you," he continued. Chloe's smile faltered. His face was back to concern, sadness, anger. "What do you mean? That is my name. I have a birth certificate and everything," she countered. Why did she want to prove herself to him?
Newfeld gave a fake laugh. "You still haven't learnt that they can be faked? Counterfeited?" Oh yeah. Of course, they can. She had helped in the smuggling of quite a few forms like that herself.
"But- but that doesn't mean I'm not- That is my name," Chloe stuttered. Newfeld shook his head sadly.
"I can tell you who you are, however. I already told you your real name in the car. You chose not to believe me," he stated.
"Why should I trust you? You were supposed to kill me, and I was supposed to kill you," she retorted. She couldn't trust him. She shouldn't trust him.
But talking to him felt almost... normal.
"I could never kill you, Fel," he whispered. His legs were crossed. He was looking straight into her eyes, and she couldn't look away. Not when he looked at her like that.
He pushed himself closer, now on his knees. Their eyes were on the same level. "I know you won't believe me, but I'll tell you anyway," he murmured, still staring into her eyes, into her soul. He had her in some kind of spell.
"Your name is Felicia Emily North. And we used to date. Till you had the accident." He shuddered, still not breaking eye contact. "I loved you, Fel. I loved you so much. And then one day, a car hit you." His eyes were impossibly wide, his pupils dilated.
"I didn't see the accident. They never let me see your body properly." His eyes were glossed over. "Till yesterday, I believed you were dead, Fel. I didn't know what I would do if you came back."
His face was close to hers now, but she wanted it to be closer. Much closer.
"All this time, you were alive. That bastard changed you. He let me think you were dead, Fel." Even closer. His lips were brushing hers. His iris, which was already black, had almost disappeared.
"But I don't care how he changed you, Fel. I love you. I'll always love you."
He kissed her, and Chloe gasped. She had wanted him to kiss her. She forgot where they were, who he was, everything. She wanted to live in that moment forever. He dug his hands into her hair. She kissed him back, harder, and then it was his turn to gasp. Their lips melded perfectly against each other. They pulled back slightly to get a little air, but the break lasted hardly a moment. He crushed his lips against hers again, and she didn't fight him. She felt blissful, like she was in heaven. She wanted to push her fingers into his hair, to feel it, but her hands were tied.
Her hands were tied. Oh no. She realised where she was all of a sudden and pulled away abruptly, as much as her subconscious protested. Her head banged slightly against the wall and she stared up at him. His face was twisted into shock, his mouth wide open. His lips were swollen, and looking at them just made her want to kiss him again, but she knew better. Did she? They were both breathing hard, and his hands were still in her hair.
"What do you think you were doing?" she muttered. Oh, she knew what he had been doing. She had been doing it too.
He slowly removed his hands and placed them by his side. He looked down at the ground, and got up. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I'll make sure you get some food," he said, practically to himself. He turned around and walked away.
When he reached the door, he paused. She could sense his hesitation. But he didn't look back. He just opened the door and walked out, the door clanging shut behind him. Chloe felt her heart shrink at his absence.
