Chapter 12 Part 1
Sheldon woke up he was no longer plagued by nightmares, it was a long time since he had one; since that day. As he looked around in the dark, he saw Natalya lying flat on the ground on a blanket, using some old machinery as cover from the cold wind.
Cindy was not where she should have been; she was gone. She had been with them, asleep, when he had closed his eyes. As he heard the gunfire in the distance, not being phased by it he called for her as he got up, stumbling around to search for her.
No matter how much he called or looked around, he couldn't find her nor was he hearing from John-Tom. Something was definitely wrong. As he was about to step outside, the figure of John-Tom blocked him as he had entered the warehouse.
"Where is Cindy?" Sheldon asked suspiciously. John Tom turned to face him, looking at him for a while and posturing before he responded, "You should worry more about yourself than others. Don't you want to leave this city?"
Sheldon gritted his teeth and folded his fist. "Where is Cindy?!"
Natalya woke from the commotion. As the gunfire outside grew much closer and much louder, it seemed to be shaking the warehouse walls as it intensified, breaking the quietness of the night.
John Tom ignored Sheldon as he looked as if he was listening to something else outside.
"Where is she?!!!" Sheldon shouted at the top his voice.
"She's gone!" John Tom replied in more of a way to silence him than to explain to him anything.
Natalya moved closer to them, "What's happening Sheldon?" She looked at the different expression between the two, one was filled with passion and the other was laid-back and uneasy to read.
Sheldon's face was furious. He looked as though he was holding back his fist from connecting to John-Tom.
"We trusted him, this bastard! He did something with Cindy!!!!"
Natalya looked at John-Tom before asking "Is it true that she left?"
John-Tom gave no reply. It seemed like he was in thought for a moment but his face quickly changed back to that laid-back attitude. He took a cigarette and smoke it quite calmly in front of the kids.
"First Ralph and now Cindy, we can't stay here any longer."
"Listen Kids," John-Tom began, "I am not against you, just didn't want to give you too much that you can't process. You won't survive a day out there... that gunfire you hear is the city at war. Cindy left to protect you all and to help you get out of here, don't look down at that. As for Ralph, I am not sure if he is still even alive and we can't just go looking for him now, can we?"
"I don't care about this war, only the people who matter. Our friends, Cindy and Ralph who is supposed to be your own friend. Are you seriously just going to wait it out here? Do you really believe that we are safe here?" The words lingered on Natalya's mouth.
There was a pause, as Sheldon still held an aggressive stance towards John-Tom. Natalya just looked at him with a calmer face.
She smiled, "Cindy is still here, isn't she?"
"What?" Sheldon responded.
John-Tom looked at her through a puff of smoke as his facial expression slightly gave away.
"What makes you think that?" he asked.
"I know because you already gave me the answer, earlier."
"What a bother, well then it doesn't make any sense with this round about the approach that she wanted. So, I will get straight to it. I have orders to take Cindy back with me, in exchange for going back peaceful. Cindy has allowed you both to leave the city. Isn't that right Cindy?"
As Cindy approached, "What nonsense is this Cindy?" Sheldon asked, as he looked at her. "We don't need handouts, what's the big idea of sacrificing yourself? Who exactly are you? Did you kill Ralph? I thought you were his friend? What the hell is going on, exactly?"
Cindy lowered her head as Natalya hugged her. "It's okay," she said to her, "You're one of us and we're never leaving you behind."
John-Tom dropped his cigarette as it burned to its last on the ground. "The whole city is at war for this girl, from what I gather, seeing the future. It's worth a lot to the right people, and that's the task I have been given to deliver her. I do owe Ralph a favor so, I am in between minds now kids."
"It's not that I wanted to leave you, it's that I just did what I think is best for the situation."
He took a few steps to go outside, "You will be safe here for now, I do also know where is Ralph is."
Natalya's eyes had a fire within them as the burning question left her mouth, "Where is he?!"
"The school you know well," he said, as he left.
"Listen to me!!" she shouted, "To pursue Ralph is dangerous and it could lead to our deaths. Don't you see I don't want that? I don't want you all to die...I saw it... please don't go chasing after him...you're my friends just do what I want for once, just this once. Stay here and live."
Sheldon and Natalya were both quiet. They knew how right Cindy's visions could be but Sheldon wondered. Still, it only stays consistent if the same path was kept but she tried to change it. Could that mean there was a chance, but to risk both Natalya and Cindy he could not fathom it in his mind. Although he learnt how to shoot a gun and some basic self-defense, it's not like they could take on an army of these people on their own.
The wind howled in the air with fury as a loud explosion rang. A mine had gone off and from the look on John-Tom's face as he came rushing back in. It could only mean one thing; they would soon all have to fight.
