02 || Recruitment more like Recrewment

Seokmin shuddered as the fresh Spring air made contact with his exposed skin. It wasn’t too cold, since the junior had been wearing a jacket, but occasionally a small gust of cool air did make its way past his exposed neck which was especially sensitive to cold weather.

Seokmin always considered himself to be a Summer person. Even though they were nearing Spring and the weather was warming up, there were still days where the temperatures outside suddenly dropped which weren’t Seokmin’s favorite days at all.

The tall, brown haired junior continued to shiver slightly. No matter the amount of shivering he went through though, Seokmin kept a bright smile on his face as he greeted the students passing by and handed them equally as bright flyers advertising baseball tryouts. The team had previously attempted to get other people on their team. While not every attempt was successful, especially when Mingyu had tried and failed to recruit Wonwoo on the team, the baseball team was still not ready to give up. Hence why Seokmin, Minhyun, and Jihoon met up after their last classes to hand out the flyers  designed by Mingyu.

The tall third baseman wanted to join the three in handing out the flyers he personally designed, but Mingyu took an extra art class during eighth period while the others on the team got to leave school at the end of either sixth or seventh period.

The first thing Seokmin did after his seventh period class ended was report to Jihoon, after which then the two met up with Minhyun who had spent his free period printing out the flyers they needed to hand out.

Things were calmer than usual seeing as it was only Seokmin that they had to manage instead of the Baekho-Seokmin duo. In addition to that the tall junior was also highly determined to help out in the effort to recruit more team members, so he didn’t pour too much time into goofing around. They all had a common goal: get more members for the team so that they could at least play for this season.

“You should have worn a heavier jacket idiot, I told you we were going to be out here for a while.” Jihoon scolded Seokmin after noticing that the younger male was rubbing his arms. He scoffed lightly at the pitcher who smiled sheepishly at Jihoon in response to his harsh wording. The junior was definitely used to the way Jihoon bluntly said what was on his mind after being friends with the short captain for so long.

On the other hand, Jihoon was accustomed to the way Seokmin brought an optimistic point of view to literally any and every situation they found themselves in. When the optimism wasn't annoying, it was highly helpful for bringing up the mood in the team.

“What Jihoon means to say is you need to take better care of yourself Seokmin.” Minhyun chuckled lightly, after interpreting how Jihoon's seemingly cold words were really the senior's way of showing concern for the shivering brunet. The shortstop let out a small exhale and then eyed the brunet's jacket with a glare similar one would expect to get from their parents. “Wear some more appropriate outerwear next time, okay?”

“Oh look there’s Joshua and Jun! Let me see if they’d want to join!” Seokmin exclaimed with great volume as he rushed over to where his two friends were strolling. They looked as if, like other nearby students, they had also just been released from the confines of the school and were now ready to just relax.

It was easy to notice how electrified the couple was by the thought and the opportunity of actually getting to spend time with each other after a grueling day of school. They just couldn't keep their hands off each other!

Okay well Jun couldn't keep his hands off of Joshua while the brunet tried his hardest to pretend as if he didn't appreciate the attention Jun was pouring his way. Eventually Joshua did cave, causing for his boyfriend to grin proudly as they locked hands with one another.

Meanwhile, Jihoon and Minhyun both gazed at the figure of their pitcher skipping towards the pair with worry plastered all across their faces. Seokmin’s loud, hyper energy was probably not what the two envisioned themselves encountering after a busy day of working in school.

“I’m going to go with him in case he tries to scare them off before actually recruiting them.” Minhyun nodded and watched carefully, making sure Jihoon had safely gotten to Seokmin and made sure that the energetic brunet wasn’t too out of control. With his two teammates standing elsewhere, Minhyun decided to continue on with handing out flyers.

The more he handed out meant the more exposure their team was getting which was really something to consider seeing as the other school sports teams like volleyball and soccer tended to get more of the school’s support; Being in the spotlight was something that the baseball team wasn’t used to, unless they were being doted on for being the school’s worst sports team.

Minhyun desperately wanted to get the team out of that negative spotlight and into a more warming and accepting one where the whole school viewed them just as he saw his team: a respectable and hard working group of individuals.

"Come try out for the Pledis High baseball team! Tryouts are next Friday and we could really use the members so please consider!" Minhyun’s generous tone reached the students leaving the school building around him. Some wandering freshmen found themselves attracted to the honey-like ambiance of Minhyun’s voice, like curious flies, leaving them more than willing to accept the bright flyers he handed to them. Some of the older members of the student body passed Minhyun by without hesitation though. He had expected them to do so, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t disappointed by their lack of interest in the team.

The shortstop wasn’t one to get too hung up over disappointments though. Instead it drove him to be more persuasive and intrusive in his job. He upped the ante by being louder and by putting himself out there more.

Not only did he wait for students to approach him to ask about information regarding the baseball team, but Minhyun also went out of his way to physically approach people in the hopes that they were kind enough to hear him out rather than just flat-out ignoring him. "Hello! Would you be interested in trying out for the Pledis High baseball-"

A dark haired student ignored Minhyun’s attempt, bumping into Minhyun in the process of heading towards the school building unlike everyone else who headed in the opposite direction. It hadn’t been the only strange thing about the student though, since he was the only one so far to abruptly interrupt, bump, and reject Minhyun all without saying a single word.

The tall shortstop actually noticed that the mysterious student was indeed a stranger to him. It just so happened that he wasn’t the only one to not be able to recognize the upfront male because within a few seconds following his rejection, Minhyun picked up faint whispers dictating that the rude student was indeed the rumored new student said to have transferred to their school right at the start of their last semester as a senior.

"The transfer student sure is lucky Minhyun is that kind. If I were him I'd be pissed off beyond belief having some kid just push past me and walk all over me like my grandma’s used carpet.” A senior in Minhyun’s class scoffed as he grumbled to his blonde female counterpart standing beside him. His angry demeanor largely contrasted the sweet nature and astonished expression on her face as her eyes followed the transfer student as he entered their school’s building.

"Yeah but did you see what he looks like? I’d let that new transfer kid walk over me any day.” A lot of the female students collectively agreed with the blonde senior as they found themselves in awe of the transfer student’s youthful and handsome visuals.

He had been wearing a mask over the bottom half of his face, but that didn’t stop the student body leaving Pledis High from commenting on their first impressions of his looks. The blonde senior sighed with a calm smile before losing sight of the new student. She frowned immediately though when she met eyes with her exasperated boyfriend who emitted jealousy just from the glare in his eyes alone. “What? He literally looks like he’s built to be a celebrity, meaning he has full permission to just step on me anytime he pleases. You on the other hand need to work on your skincare.”

"What happened?"

"It seems I just ran into the new transfer student, literally he bumped into me. And before you ask, no he was not interested in joining at all Ji.” Minhyun reported as he spotted Jihoon and Seokmin returning to greet him once again. The joyful expression on Seokmin’s face told Minhyun all he needed to know, which was that Jun and Joshua hadn’t been so quick to turn them down.

In fact, with the way Seokmin’s eyes smiled bright Minhyun was sure that at least one or both parties of the couple accepted their offer. "Oh well, I can't be too mad about it since I was intruding on his personal space. He is new, he must have not wanted to be bombarded while picking up his class schedule for his first day tomorrow. Any luck with Jun or Joshua?"

"Jun said he can’t, but Joshua didn’t exactly say no like he did. That means there’s hope!" The tall brunet gleamed. Next to him Jihoon calmly nodded with the corners of his mouth slightly turned up into a tiny smile. The captain was just as easily excited as Seokmin about the good news regarding the couple.

It was just hard interpreting his emotions because Jihoon usually didn’t outwardly express how he felt on the inside. While Minhyun and Seokmin conversed amongst themselves, Jihoon panned over to where the new transfer student was retreating into the Pledis High building from the edge of a small crowd that formed for the purpose of gawking at him.

The pale captain furrowed his eyebrows at the sight of the student, feeling as if the back of the dark haired male was somewhat familiar to him. "You know this recruiting thing is way harder than I thought it'd be. Handing out these flyers is tiring and I think a few of them gave me paper cuts. It really stings-"

"You didn’t happen to get the new kid’s name right?” Minhyun turned to face Jihoon, shaking his head no to answer the short captain’s question while Seokmin looked downwards at his “injured fingers” to mutter about the pain all the paper cuts were giving him. "I feel like I know him from somewhere, but I'm not sure. Whatever, let’s just hand out the rest of these.”

The other two team members nodded as Jihoon gestured to the handful of flyers still left in his hands. He was surprised he’d manage to hand more than half of his pile out, but wouldn’t be content until the three of them were empty-handed.

A few minutes had passed by when the faint sound of the eighth period bell ringing had called for both Jihoon and Minhyun’s attention. The two geared up in anticipation of a large crowd of students passing by them, which was exactly what you wanted when handing out flyers, while Seokmin seemed puzzled by the sound of the bell. It took a few seconds for the brunet to register what the bell meant, which was when he gasped out loud.

"Oh shit that reminds me! I have to go back inside, I forgot I was meeting Mingyu and Chan to study for a test. I'll see you all later!" Jihoon let out an irritated grunt when Seokmin’s pile of flyers fell on top of his own. He was just about done with handing his own out, and now he had to hand out Seokmin’s pile for him too?

Jihoon cursed under his breath as he watched Seokmin running back into their school, with great intent for revenge on the brunet on his mind. That was until he spotted a nearby student and pulled on his best smile to attract them towards his flyers.
