Chapter 3: Invitation
"Gabriel!"
Gabriel turned around. "Oh, Brother Samuel."
"I did not expect to see you here, all the way to the East. So far from home."
"We are here on the order of His Majesty," Gabriel said as he dropped a crate onto the damp grass, "I am sure you were already aware, Brother."
Samuel scowled as Gabriel looked away. "No need to be so formal, brother. Come, join us for our feast. We just finished with this month's auto-de-fé, come celebrate with us for the successful cleansing of this godforsaken land."
Gabriel winced, but he knew that if he spoke even a word against the Inquisition, he would be the one to burn next. This was on the High Temple's order after all, there was no questioning it. He tied a rope around the crate and kicked it with his foot, tightening the knots in place. "I'll be there"
Samuel grinned ear to ear, waiting for Gabriel to notice him and then walked away.
