Blockade
Jack stayed silent, keeping himself in the corner of the train cart. The atmosphere in his group after what happened with Katjaa and Duck was grim to say the least. Everyone split themselves up shortly after coming back to the road, wanting to leave themselves with their own thoughts right now as Kenny and Chuck kept themselves at the front of the train while Travis and Ben kept themselves somewhere in the middle.
The only people who were in the train cart right now were him, Lee, Clementine and Mark. Jack didn't exchange much words with them, though as he preferred to keep himself silent right now. After what happened with Carley, Andre and now Katjaa and Duck, he felt like silence was the only thing he needed right now. Mark tried to talk with him a few times but stopped after getting no answers from him, understanding Jack wanting to be left alone for now.
Lee and Clementine didn't keep themselves lazy after what happened, though. After having a conversation with Chuck, Lee put Clementing through the gun training and Clementine became a fairly decent shot for someone her age. Mark was against the idea at first, pointing out Clementine's age to Lee and Jack had some reservations regarding this as well. All of them faded away after Lee explained to them how Clementine will have to protect herself somehow and how they wouldn't be there for her 24/7, knowing he was right.
The other part of it included Clementine's hair as Jack understood it completely even if he didn't voice it. After what happened with Andy grabbing Clementing at the St. John dairy, he was suprised it wasn't brought up sooner. Even though Clementine was bummed out about this, she accepted it neverthless and Lee and Mark tried to cheer her up by calling her cute with her new hairstyle. Shortly after they were done with her hair, they were forced to stop everything they were doing as something happened.
"Shit! Hold on everybody!" Kenny shouted, having noticed the inconvenience in their way too as the train quickly squealed to a stop. Jack, Lee, Clementine and Mak held onto their whatever they could to keep themselves steady inside the train. After the train stopped, the entire group made their way outside their train to see what was going on.
Upon making their way outside the train, the rest of the group could see what made Kenny stop the train. Up ahead was a tall bridge, more than likely a part of a highway, and on the road above was a stopped tractor trailer with two oil tankers attached to the back. One of which was leaning over the edge of the bridge and suspended above the ground, blocking the tracks and making it impossible for the train to ride further.
Needless to say. Kenny was less then pleased by this view and voiced it loudly, "Fuck. Fuck. FUCK. FUCKKKKK!"
Mark shook his head, "That doesn't look good."
Jack shook his head as well, "Things were going too smoothly for us today. Something had to happen sooner or later."
"How are we going to get past that?" Travis asked.
"Maybe we could walk?" Ben suggested.
Kenny shook his head, "That's fucking stupid, Ben."
"I'm saying..." Ben muttered under his breath as Travis gave him a pat on the shoulder.
Chuck stepped forward from the train and looked at wreckage, "Hmm. I dunno. I ain't got much experience with y'all's fortitude but we could probably deal with that. We got a goddamn train."
"That this if full of fuel, Charles." Kenny pointed out, "We hit that, any sparks will cause a blast that'll level the whole bridge."
"Yo, you make anymore noise like that and you're gonna get your face chewed off." Someone called out for them. Everyone looked up and found a couple looking at them from ontop of the bridge.
"Are you guys gonna be trouble?" A dark skinned woman asked as Kenny, Jack and Travisgot themselves on guard just in case if the couple would have some ill intentions towards them and their group, "Because we could've just kept walking."
"No, we're friendly." Lee replied.
"As long as you are friendly to us!" Jack added, keeping himself on guard as the couple exchanged a few words with each other before looking back at the group below them again.
"You guys got a problem with your train?" The man asked.
"Yeah, you're standing right in front of it." Kenny replied.
"Dude, it's a wreck. It's not so bad from up here. Send your buddy up to have a look." The man said.
Lee looked around his group, "I got this. But if anything goes sideways."
"We won't let them get away." Jack reassured him.
Lee walked over to the ladder and looked ahead of himself, seeing there was a train station just past the overpass to the left of the train tracks. Deciding to let his group know about it before climbing up the ladder, he looked over his shoulder at him, "Guys. There's a train station just ahead of us. Someone should go search it when I will talk with them. Maybe we'll find some supplies there and maybe if we'll get lucky, we'll find something we can use to get the tanker out of the way."
"Okay. Sounds good to me. I'll go check it out." Jack volunteered to go to search the train station, wanting to do something to keep his mind off his thoughts as Lee nodded at him and started to climb up the ladder. Not wasting any time, the blonde haired young man started to make his way towards his destination.
"I'll go with you, man." Travis stepped towards him in order to follow him, "Just in case if there will be any walkers in the train station."
"Fine. If you say so." Jack shrugged, not caring much about this as he continued to make his way towards the train station with his back turned to him and his group. Travis sighed sadly and followed Jack while Ben looked at him with a guilty look on his face.
"A group this large is what we need." Lee overheard a man say from above as he continued to climb up the ladder to top of the bridge.
"They're what you think we need. We're doing fine." The woman replied just as Lee reached the top and pulled himself up to the edge.
"For now. What about when...?" The man was interrupted before he could finish the sentence.
"Stop it." The woman said, ending the conversation when she saw Lee climb his way to the top of the bridge.
The man turned to look at Lee, "Hey, dude, I'm Omid."
"Lee." Lee introduced himself to him.
"Christa." The woman now named Christa added, "What's the deal with the train?"
"We're driving it." Lee explained.
Omid's eyes widened in excitement, "OH, MAN."
"I'm not gonna bullshit you." Lee decided to be honest with them, "We've had a rought couple of days. Our home was attacked yesterday and we lost two of our own in this attack. We're just trying to get somewhere safer."
Christa nodded sadly in understanding, "It's okay."
"Oh, shit!" Omid's eyes widened, "Goddamn, you guys have a kid!"
Lee looked over his shoulder and saw Clementine pull herself up, "What are you doing up here?"
"Do you know how long it's been since I've seen a kid? Shit! What's your name?" Omid asked with an excited look on his face.
Clementine smiled at him, "Clementine."
Lee smiled in amusement and crossed his arms, "Oh, so he gets to swear?"
Omid shifted his gaze from Clementine to Christa and grinned at her, "Well, this is great. See, things are looking up."
Christa narrowed her eyes at Lee, "You're not her dad. He down there?"
"It's that obvious?" Lee asked.
Christa nodded, "To me."
"No." Lee shook his head, "He's not down there."
"Hmm." Christa hummed, "What's your story?"
"I came across Clementine alone the first day all of this happened. We've been together ever since." Lee replied, deciding not to tell them about him being a convicted murderer right away as he just met them and didn't know if he could trust them with this information.
"And everybody down there, they're cool?" Christa asked.
Lee looked over his shoulder at his group, "Ben is young and stupid but I think he's harmless, Travis tries to make himself useful to the group, we just met Chuck, but he seems like an alright guy, Mark looks after the group but is not in the condition right now and so is Jack as his best friend just died and Kenny lost his wife and kid."
Omid sighed in pity for Jack and Kenny, "Man. How long?"
"What time is it?" Lee replied with a question of his own.
Omid shrugged, "I don't know. Four?
"About two hours ago." Lee gave them his answer regarding Kenny. He afterwards provided them the answer regarding Jack, "Jack lost his best friend yesterday."
Christa gasped, "Goddamn..."
"We're sorry for anything that's happened to you guys." Omid added, "That train is awesome, though."
"That tank is your real problem. We'll help you with it, but if we see anything we don't like, we're moving on down the road. Alone." Christa explained.
"We'd appreciate the help." Lee nodded his head at them in a grateful manner.
"You can't just blast through it, I guess." Omid stated.
"If you could get it down, the rest would be pretty easy." Christa explained.
"We'll start there." Lee said.
"We'll come down and settle in, and see how we can help." Christa said as Lee looked around the bridge, trying to see if there was anything worth taking there. He opened a door of a nearby truck and saw there was some tape inside it. He took it for himself, feeling like he could make a good use of it soon.
After searching the top of the bridge and finding nothing useful there except for the duct tape, Lee walked over to Omid and Christa, "Let's go. I'll introduce you to my group."
"Alright." Omid smiled excitedly as Christa nodded at him. Lee climbed down the ladder to the ground level as Clementine, Omid and Christa followed him. After making sure Clementine, Christa and Omid were on the ground level with him, he walked over to his group,
"Guys, this is Omid and Christa." He introduced the newcomers to his group as Ben, Kenny and Chuck stared at them silently. The awkward silence would follow if it wasn't for Mark.
Mark gave them a pained nod, "Nice to meetcha."
Omid's eyes widened when he saw Mark's wound, "Whoa, sick! How did you get shot?"
"It's a long story..." Mark replied, not wanting to go into details as he shook hands with Omid.
"They've agreed to help us with our little problem." Lee revealed.
"Thank you." Mark said in a grateful tone, "Any extra help would be appreciated."
-----
Travis rubbed the back of his head with an awkward look on his face, keeping his eyes on Jack who kept himself ahead of him as the two neared the train station. If Travis was honest with himself, he felt worried for Jack as Jack kept to himself for most of the time following the death of Andre. He knew he shouldn't be suprised by this, knowing the two were close with each other and he knew he would be in a similiar condition if Ben had died. It didn't make him any less worried for Jack, though.
"So..." He awkwardly started to break the silence between them, "A pretty fucked up day?"
Jack sighed, "Yeah..."
"Do you want to talk about it or something?" Travis asked.
"No. The less we talk about it, the better." Jack shook his head, not bothering to look behind him at Travis, "Let's just focus on searching this place and finding something to get rid of the blockade. I just want to come back to the road right now."
"Fine..." Travis sighed. At least he tried to have a conversation with him. Upon reaching the train station, he walked over to the door and tried to open it. He shook his head when the door didn't move, making it obvious to him the place was closed. He turned around to look at Jack a second later, wanting to fill them in about it quickly, "It's closed."
"Great." Jack shook his head, "Any ideas on how are we going to get inside?"
"We can force the door open." Travis suggested.
Jack shook his head at the suggestion, "Banging it down may just be too loud and take too long."
"Can I help?" A voice sounded behind Jack and Travis as the two turned around and saw Clementine standing behind them.
Jack raised his brow at her in suprise, "Clem. What are you doing here?"
"Everyone is busy with their own stuff." Clementine explained, "I thought I might come here and help."
"Do they know you're here?" Jack asked.
"Yes." Clementine gave him a nod, "I asked Lee if I could come here to help you. He told me I can for as long as I will watch out for myself."
Jack nodded in return in understand as his voice grew a bit stern when he uttered, "Okay. You can help us on one condition. You do everything we tell you to do. If I tell you to run, you run. If I tell you to get help, you go get help. The last thing I need right now is dealing with your angry dad. Do you understand?"
"Yes." Clementine replied in understandng.
"Good." Jack nodded at him, "Let's now find a way to enter this place."
Travis looked around himself and saw a gap above the door, "Look up. There's a gap above the door. Do you think the kid will be able to fit through the gap if he will stand on my shoulders?"
"That's a good idea." Jack nodded at him and turned around to look at Clementine, "You up for it, Clem?"
"Yeah." Clementine nodded as Jack picked her up and put both of her feet on his shoulders.
"What do you see?" Jack asked as Clementine took a look into the train station.
"Lots of crates and stuff." Clementine replied, reaching a bit deeper.
"Maybe we can find the key or figure out a way to knock this door down." Jack suggested and shifted his attention to Travis even if he made sure to keep Clementine won't fall off his shoulders, "Your Special Forces papa wouldn't have taught you how to pick a lock right?"
"Nope." Travis shook his head. He chuckled a second later, "Picking a lock, huh? Good thing Lee is not here."
Jack deadpanned, "Seriously?"
"What? That conversation still makes me laugh when I think about it!" Travis defended himself as a click sounded from the other side of the door.
"I think I opened it." Clementine revealed, being hosted back to the ground by Jack. He opened the door and pulled out his pistol, readying himself to enter it. He walked into the training station and looked around himself, wanting to know if there was anyone or anything inside the train station.
"Good job, kid." Travis praised Clementine as Clementine smiled proudly at him and Jack. He shifted his gaze to Jack a second later,"You see anything there?"
"Take a look yourself." Jack replied as Clementine and Travis followed him into the building. Once both of them were inside, they realized just how dark the room was because of there being only a window so small you could barely see anything. The fact that the sun was slowly starting to set didn't help them either.
Travis shook her head, "Shit. I can barely see anything in this darkness."
"That's what I'm thinking right now. Someone or something will have to hold the door open." Jack stated as an idea flew into Travis' mind a second later. He pulled out his hatchet and placed it in front of the door, so it wouldn't close. He shifted his gaze back to Jack a second later as Jack nodded at him in a pleased manner, "Okay. That should do the job."
"So what are we looking for anyway?" Clementine asked, keeping herself close to Jack and Travis.
"Something to deal with that tank." Jack explained as Clementine nodded in understanding.
The group of four split up around the building and started to search it with hopes of finding something which will help them get rid of the problem of the road blockade. As they continued to search the building, Jack and Clementine couldn't find any supplies their group could make some use of, but Travis was more fortunate than them.
The teenager walked over to the cage in the middle of the building and looked through it, spotting a blowtorch and some police tape, "Guys. I think I found something."
"What is it?" Jack asked as he walked over to him with Clementine. Travis pointed at the blowtorch on the other side of the gate. He nodded in satisfied manner a second later, "Good find, Travis. This is exactly what we need."
"Thanks." Travis smiled at him gratefully as he to open the cage door, but it wouldn't budge, "Dammit."
"Maybe there's another way." Clementine stated.
Jack looked up at the cage and saw a small gap above them. He shifted his gaze to Clementine shortly after, "Clem. Do you think you will fit through the gap above us?"
Clementine looked in the direction Jack was looking at right now and nodded, "Yeah. I think so. Can you hoist me again?"
"Alright." Jack nodded at her and helped her up to his shoulders. Clementine slowly and carefully climbed inside, finding himself on the other side of the gate.
"There are keys back there, grab them." Travis said as Clementine froze in her tracks, having noticed something the others didn't, "Kid?"
"Behind you!" Clementine warned them.
Jack's eyes widened as she heard a walker approach her from behind. He turned around to face it, feeling how how eyes widened the moment he set his eyes on the rotting face of a walker and pulled out her pistol, intending to get rid of it. The walker shoved itself at him before he could aim her pistol at it, though, making him drop his pistol to the floor. He grabbed the walker by it's shoulder, doing his best to keep it away from her.
Travis' reaction to seeing it was instant as he pulled out Andre's shotgun and aimed it at the walker Jack was trying to keep away from himself. He didn't got a chance to fire it as another walker came out of the darkness and shoved itself towards him. Travis quickly shifted his attention from the walker attacking Jack to the walker moving towards him. The walker lunged at him and Travis quickly pulled the trigger, killing it with it's head exploading into pieces.
Because of him taking care of the walker Jack was fighting with, he didn't saw another walker walking towards him. His eyes widened in alarm as he saw how close the walker was to him, but fortunely for her it didn't have a chance to do anything as Jack fired his pistol, killing the undead before it could reach him.
Travis smiled at Jack gratefully, "Fuck. That was close. Thanks, man."
"No problem." Jack nodded at him, letting out a sigh as he looked around himself, "We should have pay attention to our surroundings more."
Travis nodded in return and shifted his gaze back to Clementine, "C'mon, kid. Give us the keys. Let's take the blowtorch and get out of here."
"Okay." Clementine replied in understanding as she went to grab the keys. It was when the group heard more growling coming from the darkness. This time, a walker on Clementine's side of the cage came out and started moving towards her. Seeing the undead walking towards her, Clementine wasted no time and grabbed the keys. She stuck his hand out of the gate as Jack grabbed the keys and quickly used them to open the gate. Clementine quickly ran out of the cage as Jack aimed his pistol at the walker and fired, killing it with just one round to the head.
The blonde haired young man looked down at her with a worried look on his face a second later, "You okay, Clem?"
"Yes." Clementine assured him, "I got out of there before it could reach me."
"Can you see more?" Travis asked as he looked around them. Just as Jack and Clementine were about to answer him, they were interrupted by Lee and Christa who rushed into the train station.
Lee rushed into the train station with an alarmed look on his face, having his pistol in ready, "Guys. What's going on?"
"We heard a gunshot." Christa added, looking equally as alarmed as she followed Lee into the building and took notice of the deceased walker.
"We got jumped by a few walkers." Travis explained as Lee and Christa lowered their guard a bit upon seeing the situation was already handled by them.
Christa crossed her arms, "You two and a kid against three walkers?"
Jack narrowed his eyes at her, "We handled it."
"Yeah, looks like. What if you hadn't?" Christa retorted.
"Does it matter? We handled it. That's what matters." Jack retorted in return, "I'm after a tough day and I'm not in the mood of getting lectured by someone I don't even know the name of."
"I'm just saying..." Christa began to say.
"Christa." Lee cut her off as Christa glanced at him and saw him giving her a look which told her to cut it out. Her eyes widened a bit as she recalled Lee telling her how Jack had just lost his best friend. She sighed a second later, knowing right now probably was not the best time to start fights with him.
"I'm sorry. I was just worried about the girl." She apologized to them as she turned around and started to walk out of the gas station, "I'm gonna go make sure the noise didn't cause us any problems."
"That's a good idea." Clementine agreed as Christa smiled and nodded at the girl. She walked out of the train station a second later.
Lee sighed upon seeing Christa leave and shifted his gaze to Clementine, "You okay, Clementine?"
"Yeah. I'm a little shaky." Clementine reassured him.
"It will pass." Lee reassured her in return and shifted his gaze to Jack and Travis, "Find anything here?"
Travis smiled at him and pointed at the blowtorch behind them, "Yeah. A blowtorch over there."
"You got a blowtorch? Great. Now we will be able to get rid of this tanker in our way." Lee smiled upon laying his eyes on the blowtorch and shifted his gaze to Clementine, "Good job, Clem."
"Thanks." Clementine smiled at him.
"Someone will have to take care of the tank now." Jack stated.
"Let me take care of it." Lee replied, "You two already did enough by getting this blowtorch for the group. You should take some rest before we will go back to the road."
"Okay." Jack nodded at Lee as he walked out of the train station and was followed by Travis who made sure to pick up his hatchet while Clementine waited for Lee. Upon getting the blowtorch, he walked out of the building as he had no other reason to stay inside. The group of four made their way back to the their group, earning everyone's attention.
"Jack and Travis found a blowtorch in the station. Should make quick work of the coupling up there." Lee declared.
"Excellent, I'll come up there with you to have a look." Omid smiled at the new and immiediately made his way to the ladder. Lee followed him a second later as Omid began to climb his way up the ladder. Jack watched him and Lee making their way up the ladder and shook his head, letting out a sigh as he made his way to the back of the train where Ben was taking watch on top of the train cart.
The blonde haired young man looked up at Ben questioningly, "Got a clear view there?"
"Yeah, we're good for a ways." Ben looked down at him and gave him a relieved nod, "Thank God... We need someone, anyone, to come along and... and... exterminate them or something."
Jack nodded in agreement, "Yeah. Have to agree with you there."
"Wait? Really?" Ben looked suprised by this, "But you don't seem, you know whenever you're around them..."
"Ben." Jack cut Ben off by calling out his name, "They're rotten walking corpses what do nothing but eat people. You know, sometimes you might see me take care of one, because I have to, but don't start thinking they don't horrify me."
"I'm glad somebody else feels that way." Ben looked pleasantly suprised by someone else having the same opinion about the walkers, "I'm telling you, Jack, if they ever get a HOLD of me...and I know I'm not getting out of it...that's it, man. I'm just gonna...punch my own ticket."
"Relax. This won't happen to you." Jack reassured him, "We already lost enough people today and we ain't losing you too."
"We'll see." Ben sighed, "Thanks for talking with me."
Jack nodded at him, "Talk to you later."
"Hey, Jack." Jack shifted his attention to the voice a second later and saw Travis walking towards him, "We need to talk."
Jack looked at him questioningly, "What do you want?"
"Are you okay?" Travis asked him in worry, "After what went down back at the motel, you've been..."
"How do you think I'm doing? My best friend died and three more people from our people died. One of them a kid." Jack gave him an honest answer as Travis flinched a bit at the brutal honesty from him. It was still better than Jack giving him the silent treatment or telling him to shut up, though. The blonde haired young man sighed a second later with guilt starting to show in his tone, "You know, at the start of all of this, before I met Lee and the others, Andre saved my life. He saved my life and I couldn't save his..."
"Dude. What happened to him was not your fault." Travis told him. "Lilly was just crazy. No one could have predicted what she would do."
"It doesn't make me any better. It's almost like I'm getting karma for stopping Larry from turning into a walker." Jack admitted, "You know the worst part about this? Andre could have died thinking I hated him..."
Travis' eyes widened a bit, "What?"
"We had an argument regarding our views on everything before the bandits attacked us." Jack explained with guilt and regret showing in his tone, "I said not so pleasant things to him and this was the last conversation we ever had with each other. It just...sucks. I just wish I talked with him differently back then. Maybe he wouldn't have died thinking I thought less of him if that was the case..."
Travis gave him a sympathetic look, "You know he didn't think that in his final moments, right? If I were to guess, he had this conversation with you because he was worried about you. That's something only a true friend would do."
"Yeah. What did I do as a true friend, then?" Jack asked with regret staying evident in his tone, "I argued with him and how he is rotting somewhere in the middle of the road because of some crazy bitch..."
Travis stepped closer to him, "Hey, pal. Don't dwell too much on it. I'm sure Andre didn't have any of those thoughts in his head when he died. If anything, he was just letting you vent about everything. This is why he allowed you to talk with you the way you did. You'll see. If you would have a conversation right now, then you would talk nomally as if that didn't happen."
"Yeah. Maybe..." Jack sighed.
Travis pulled his hand away from his shoulder a second later, "I have semething for you."
"What is it?" Jack asked.
"Here. I grabbed it from his body before we left it behind." Travis smiled as he held out Andre's shotgun and police baton out to Jack, "I'm sure he would want you to have this."
Jack's eyes widened a bit as he took the items from Andre with a look of gratitude on his face, "Travis. Thank you..."
"Anytime. We need to help each other, right?" Travis asked, keeping his smile on his face, "We're in this together, after all."
Jack didn't answer him straight away as he kept his gaze on the shotgun and the police baton. Letting out a sigh, he found himself thinking to the last conversation he had with Andre. Even though their last interaction went the way it did and Jack kept some second thoughts in his mind even with Travis reassurance, Jack promised himself something here. He promised himself that he would keep on living and make his group safe, no matter the cost to honor Andre.
"I'm going to make sure your death wasn't in vain, Andre. I promise..." He thought to himself with determination evident in his internal as he strapped everything to his body. He looked up at Travis a second later and gave him a grateful hug. He spoke to him again a second later, "Thanks again."
"No problem. At least I returned the favor for saving us back in the forest." Travis smiled as he wasted no time and hugged him back.
Jack pulled away from him, "It was nothing. I did what had to be done."
"No. You don't get how much it meant to me and Ben." Travis shook his head as his face grew more serious, "You know what what we've been through before we joined your group..."
"Yeah. I don't know. I didn't want to come off as pushy." Jack shook his head as Ben visibly flinched at what Travis just said.
Travis looked at him questioningly, "Want me to tell you?"
"Are you sure?" Jack raised his brow at him.
"Yeah. I feel comfortable with you to share this information with." Travis nodded in confirmation, "As you know, we've been hiding with our classmates back when all this started before Jenny Pitcher took pills and turned into a walker. There was this one guy who was with us. John Kennedy. He was the typical quiet kid who never crossed and paid his attention. Some people didn't like this, though and kept bothering him. The worst of them was a guy named Brad. The typical jock asshole. If there was a picture definition of an asshole jock, then his name would be there."
Travis went further into his story, "He and his pals just couldn't stop bothering him until one day John got sick of it and left the gymnasium. Not to be seen again. All of us were certain he died and Brad and his pals even laughed at it. After all the crap with Jenny turning into a walker went down, me and Ben managed to escape with some others. More specifically Mr. Parker, Mrs. Robertson, Erin, Alice, Brad and his best pal Keith."
Jack kept himself silent as Travis clenched his hands, "We were camping out in the woods after everything went down. Mr. Parker and Keith left to gather some food while we stayed with Mrs. Robertson, Alice, Erin and Brad in the camp. He was making his usual remarks as the self proclaimed leader until one person walked out of woods. It was John. The saying all of us were shocked would be the understatement of the century. He wasn't alone, though."
"He was with the bandts?" Jack asked, listening to everything Travis had to say to him. Ben and Travis were scared of the bandits and hated them. He knew there must have been a reason why.
"Yes. The bandits." Travis nodded in confirmation, "Brad tried to play the tough guy act with him. However John was done with him and shot him in the head. Afterwards, he left and left the bandits with us as some kind of deal. The bandits afterwards..." He sucked in a breath as Ben above him clenched his hands, "...raped Mrs. Roberts, Alice and Erin and forced me and Ben to watch."
"Jesus Christ..." Jack shook his head with a wave of anger hitting his body upon finding out what the bandits did to Ben and Travis' old group.
Travis' voice became shaky as he continued his story from there, "Once they were done with them, they told me and Ben to leave and we did. We left them alone with the bandits and never looked back. I have no idea what happened to them after this. We found Mr. Parker shortly after. Keith wasn't with him as they got split up from each other because of some walkers. We were found by your group shortly after..."
Jack stayed silent, not knowing what to say to him right now as he processed what Travis just told him. Even though anger over what the bandits did to their group old remained inside of him, he couldn't help but feel feel and for everyone in this story. To Ben. To Travis. To those women. Aside from Brad. He brought what happened to him on himself. He couldn't help but ask himself what would happen if and his group found them sooner. If that was the case, then maybe they could have stopped this from happening to them...
"Travis. Ben. I'm so sorry you two had to go through something like this..." He pushed himself out of his silent state a second later, not knowing how else to reply as he shifted his gaze between Travis and Ben. Both of whom looked shaken up by this story, "...I can't imagine how that must have been like..."
Travis nodded at him to show Jack his gratitude for his condolences, "This is why you and you group can always count on us. You saved us. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you and your group. By staying with you, we will keep ourselves alive and make sure whatever happened to our classmates wasn't for nothing..."
"Alright." Jack nodded back at him. Before he and Travis knew it, the two were hugging once more as a token of understanding between the two of them. As the two shared their hug, Lee and Omid made their way up the ladder and reached the top of the bridge.
He walked over to the tank and set the blowtorch next to it. He turned it on, but it didn't ignite, "Shit."
"What's up?" Omid asked.
"The hose has a leak in it." Lee explained.
"Turn it off, dude! I don't want my eyebrows burned off!" Omid slightly backed away from Lee and the blowtorch. Lee complied and turned off the blowtorch. Reminding himself he found the tape he found in the truck several minutes earlier, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the said tape. He used it to cover the leak, hoping it will make the blowtorch work.
"Hope this holds." He said to himself as he turned on the blowtorch and closed his eyes before starting to cut the tanker.
Omid grinned at the view of Lee cutting down the tank, "That's crazy, look at it go."
"Just about got it." Lee replied as he continued to cut the tanker. The truck slowly started to slide and Omid quickly pulled Lee back to safety before he was pushed down the bridge. He looked at Omid with a grateful look on his face, "Whoa, thanks!"
Omid smiled at him, "No sweat, man."
"This thing's hanging on by a thread. The smallest cut and it'll go." Lee stated as he blowtorch to Omid, "Here. The weak portion of the coupling is out of my reach."
"You think it'll be within mine?" Omid asked.
"No, but I'm gonna dangle you over that ledge." Lee explained.
"The hell you are!" Omid protested. His protest was to no avail as dangling over a ledge with Lee holding onto him was the next thing he knew, "God, you're a real son of a bitch, aren't you?"
"Shut up and start cutting." Lee replied.
Jack, Ben and Travis watched the two men slowly cut down the tank before hearing something behind them. They turned around to the source of the noise and felt how their eyes widened when they saw what it was. They saw a large herd of walkers. From the view at the top of the train, they could tell there were hundreds of them.
Jack's eyes widened in an instant, "...Oh, fuck me."
"Guys, there's something coming!" Ben shouted.
"What the what?" Omid asked.
"There must be thousand." Lee said with horror.
"We gotta go!" Travis shouted as Ben jumped down and went inside the train. He and Jack wasted no time and quickly climbed inside the train, not wanting to be anywhere near the ground level right now. The rest of their group quickly did the same.
"Fuck, Omid, cut! Cut!" Lee demanded.
"It's going! Pull me up!" Omid shouted Omid successfully cut through the tank and Lee pulled him up. The tanker fell down to the side, allowing the train to ride further. Unfortunely for Omid and Lee it took the ladder along with it, trapping both of them on the bridge.
"Kenny, go!" Lee shouted as Kenny quickly started the train. The train began to drive forward with most of the group inside it, with Lee and Omid being the only two members who didn't make it there in time. Lee quickly made his way to the other side of the bridge and Omid followed him, "We gotta jump."
"What?! No way!" Omid replied as he and Lee climbed over the railing and leaned against it.
"Jump!" Lee shouted, hearing how the group shouted for him and Omid to hurry from the train as the train slowly started to move forward below the bridge he and Omid were trapped on.
"No!" Omid protested.
"Jump, dammit!" Lee screamed.
"Still no!" Omid protested further.
"Fine!" Lee shouted as he jumped onto the passing train, landing on top of it.
Omid jumped down shortly after Lee, knowing he had no other choice right now and unfortunely for him he didn't land perfectly on the top of the train like Lee did. He screamed as bounced off the top of the train and landed on the ground with a loud thug.
"Shit!" Christa shouted as she jumped out of the boxcar and ran over to Omid.
She quickly brought Omid back on his feet and the two them quickly started to make their way towards the boxcar. Omid limped behind Christa, having wounded his leg when he landed on the ground as he did best not to get left behind. Lee and Mark quickly ran over to the entrance from the boxcar and looked at both of them, intending to bring them back inside the train. Mark grabbed Omid and Lee grabbed Christa and the two of them pulled him back onboard the train as Lee climbed down from the top of the of the train and climbed his way into the boxcar.
"Thanks." Omid said to Mark, letting out a deep breath, "That was a lot of them."
Clementine looked at Lee in worry, "Are you hurt?"
"No. We're okay." Lee replied.
"Speak for yourself, my leg is fucked." Omid added.
-----
Some time later after the sun had already vanished from the horizon, Lee looked out the cab window as the train was close to their destination. In fact, he could already see their destination in the distance. With the night sky above the city, Savannah looked really beautiful right now. The view of it made Lee forgot what has become of the world around him for a few seconds before he reminded himself Savannah was most likely just as deserted as most of the cities nowadays.
"Next stop, the Atlantic." A small smile grew on Kenny's face as set his eyes on their destination. Jack who was standing next to him couldn't help himself and smiled as well, having the first smile on his face in a while.
Jack nodded in agreement, "Amen."
"Do you think we'll find a boat large enough to fit our entire group?" Lee asked them.
"We can only hope, Lee." Jack replied. If this idea won't work, they will have to think of something else.
Kenny sighed, "Anything's possible. It doesn't have to be just one boat. It can be two or even three as long as it will fit everyone."
Lee shifted his gaze between his two friends in worry, "Will you two be alright?"
"I'll be fine." Jack nodded at him, "I had a conversation with Travis earlier and it helped me a bit."
"Good for you, pal. Too bad I can't say the same about himself." Kenny sighed, "I'll be alive, I guess. Blood in my heart, blood in my brain, at least."
"I'll leave you to your thoughts." Lee turned away from them and walked over to Clementine who was sleeping on a seat by the window. He shook his head at the view of her, "She's out cold like I've never seen."
"Can you blame her, though?" Jack asked as Lee looked over his shoulder at him and shook his head. Just as they were about to end this conversation, their attention was shifted back to Clementine as her walkie-talkie cackled. Jack's eyes widened, "..The fuck?"
"Hello there...?" An unknown male voice uttered in Clementine's walkie-talkie as Lee picked it up with a shocked and cautious look on his face.
"What the...?" He muttered under his breath as Kenny and Jack joined him by his ides, both of them equally as shocked.
"Can't wait for you to get to Savannah, Clementine. I've got your parents right here, and you be sure to find me whether Lee wants you to or not. Now, what I need..." The unknown man voice said before the walkie-talkie cut off, leaving the three men shocked.
Lee gasped in shock, "Holy shit..."
"I thought that fucking thing was broken!" Kenny stated with a shocked look on his face.
"So did I!" Jack added, equally as shocked.
Lee shifted his gaze from the walkie-talkie to Jack and Kenny, "We all did..."
"Well, it sounds like somebody knows where we're headed." Kenny stated as shifted his gaze to the window and looked out at the city in front of them.
Lee shook his head, "Who the fuck...?"
"I don't know. But I doubt we're going to be happy when we find out." Kenny stated.
Jack sighed, "Took those words out of my mouth..."
