Broken tapes (Chapter 3)

Muffin Juice watched as a shadowy figure passed by his door. Looking through the cracks in the door and sometimes peeking from underneath. He stood up against the door and clicked the lock as the footsteps began retreating down the dirt path. He breathed in a sigh of relief when he knew it was clear. He looked up at the ghost that had a worried expression on with his lips drawn into a tight thin line.

"Woolf hey it's okay." Muffin tried to comfort the ghost. Who shook his head and pulled out a tape. Unlike regular ghosts he couldn't go through walls and he could actually grab things. The only issue was that he didn't have a voice. He was silenced. Muffin had come up with the idea of using a tape recording of English lessons he had stolen from somewhere he couldn't remember where though. He had given the tape to Woolf and he had quickly figured out how to use it to communicate with Muffin.

"Is he gone?" Woolf played the tape clicking the buttons and pausing it before it continued to ramble on something he didn't need to say.

"I think so but we should just stay quiet for a little bit longer, okay?" Muffin whispered.  Woolf nodded. Muffin like Woolf got shot by Laff, although Muffin survived. How? Well Muffin was a god. Woolf wasn't. Woolf floated in front of Muffin inches away. Woolf looked a lot different. Woolf when he was alive had green animal-like eyes and had dark black hair. This Woolf had gray transparent hair along with the fact that he was transparent. His tail also hung limp and always brushed against the ground. He had a small halo that seemed to be melting. Very rarely would Muffin see a drop of gold fall from the halo and run down Woolf's face. Muffin saw that more red blood seemed to fall down from his forehead, which had the fatal wound or how Woolf died.  It always dripped down when the ghost was stressed out. Woolf clicked a few buttons on the tape and a robotic voice asked.

"Should I follow?"

Muffin hesitated to answer and glanced out the door. It wouldn't take the ghost long to catch up. Plus it wasn't like the ghost could die. Woolf could fly as he was floating in front of Muffin at the moment.

"Fine, be careful and don't run into any trees." Muffin muttered. But Woolf had already ran out the door at 'Fine'

Woolf floated above the trees trying to see if he could see the person that walked past them. He heard footsteps nearby and told himself to stop floating. He fell from the sky and landed in a tree. It didn't hurt since he didn't feel pain, he just stuck to the branch. He twisted and looked over to see a shadowy figure looking up into the exact tree that Woolf had landed. His eyes were pure white and glowed in the darkness. Woolf could see that there were light red swirls in his eyes. It was difficult to see anything else about the person. Even with the moonlight casting glows on the area he was standing it still seemed like he was slunk back in the darkness. Hidden from sight. Woolf gripped the branch with his claws and launched himself from the tree. Before he knew it he was crashing into a person moving faster than a missile. They tumbled into each other and while Woolf lay crumbled on the ground while the other person back flipped nimbly onto their feet. Woolf attempted to swiftly stand up but instead struggled to heave himself to his feet. Almost like he experienced pain from crashing into that person. The person was staring at Woolf. Who pulled out his tape and played the buttons that should have said 'Who are you?' but instead it played.

"What are you?"  The person looked startled at the question like he didn't even know the answer. Woolf could see the person hesitate to answer. Woolf grabbed his taper and restated his question shaking his head. "Who are you?" The person seemed to smile and a soft raspy cough escaped from the figure. The figure's arm reached into his pocket and pulled out a small item. The item was about the size of a phone. The person pressed a button and it seemed like he changed his form as he was taller, about the same height as Woolf. Wolf ears seemed to appear from his head along with a fluffy tail mirroring his own.

"I'm you!" The person laughed in Woolf's voice. Woolf took a step back and tripped on a tree root he fell backwards losing his breath. The person stepped all the way into the moonlight with his hand stretched up to the stars. Woolf noticed as he stepped into the light that Woolf was right. This person was made out of shadow; he didn't have any noticeable features beside the eyes that Woolf had noticed earlier along with being able to see the person's teeth. "You must be so confused." The person said softly, mocking a caring tone. "Here just for you I'll answer one of your questions so think carefully." The person said holding up a hand and examining it like there were features to see. Woolf carefully played his tape in the right words.

"How are you doing that?" Woolf asked. The person looked at Woolf with a curious face.

"What specifically?"

"Shadows," Woolf's tape clicked.

"Oh, it's this handy little device." the person said, holding out what looked to be like a dial knob with a small arrow pointing to the options. The knob was pulled all the way to the right which had a darker color obviously indicating that it was the side with the most shadows. Swift as a snake Woolf charged at the person knocking the device out of the shadow person's hand sending it flying to the sky. Woolf caught it and held it close to his chest. Instead of the shadows retreating from the person quickly the person laughed still in his shadowy form. "Clever but- I think you didn't notice I can do this." The person continued to laugh as he seemed to grow shorter and appear with two tophats on. He then clapped his hands and said. "Well it was nice getting to know you. But I've gotta go. Cya furry," the person laughed in a voice that sounded like Nadwes. As the person ran towards one of the tall pine trees and disappeared.

Nadwe flew towards his house as the sun began to set. The moon casting a light glow on the desert below him, as Nadwe neared his home he started to fly lower to the ground. Probably if Nadwe would have to make an estimate he would say about right out of Blaza's reach. That's how high he was. Blaza was the tallest member of the group so it was a decent height to be at. As he was entering the village surrounded by trees he shapeshifted mid-air and landed on his feet. Keeping the moment he ran down the path with surprising speed. His foot crunched on something and he stopped looking down to see something like a  tape recorder. He picked up and felt it crack in half as he looked at the bits laying in his hand. He shoved the parts into his pocket and continued to run to his house. He practically leaped up the stairs and yanked the door open. He ran inside his shoes, clicking on the wooden floor. He slid in seeing the rest of his friends leaning over a map.

"Nadwe! Oh my god don't scare me like that!" Meme shouted at Nadwe. Nadwe grumbled something and crossed his arms. Biting the inside of his cheek, tasting blood he just looked down at the floor and mumbled,
"I'm gonna go to my old house."  Meme walked over to Nadwe and grabbed Nadwes chin making Nadwe look Meme in his eyes.

"Are you alright?" Meme asked. Nadwe just smiled and nodded. "We can just move Socks to your old house." Meme told Nadwe, "So that you can have your own room back," Meme said standing up and walking over to the basement. He returned a few seconds later with Socks following behind Meme.

"Hi Socks." Nadwe grumbled.

"Hi Nadwe." Socks responded. Nadwe looked up and noticed Socks had this kind of cocky smirk on. He walked up to Nadwe and continued to smile down at him. Nadwe identified a long scratch on his face running across his eye stretching down from his forehead. He also had burn scars on the sides of his face. He was also missing a small part of his eyebrow. Which also had a scar running through it. A small scar ran across his lips stretching down from underneath his chin and stretching to the sides of his throat, the rest of the scar hiding underneath his space suit. Nadwe didn't recall seeing any of these when Meme first brought Socks in. "Don't worry about me." Socks whispered in Nadwes ear as he walked towards the door. "Just next door?" Socks asked. His tone instantly went from perfect English to an odd sloppy sort of phrasing.

"Yeah Socks, you sure you'll be alright?" Meme asked.

"Yeah just fine." Socks said. Closing the door behind him. Nadwe walked over to the table where Blaza and Joocie had been standing silently, really Nadwe hadn't noticed they had been in there.

"Whatcha guys got here?" Nadwe said, leaning over looking at the map.

"It's the map of the basement." Blaza responded. Not interested in small talk.

"We're planning on going there tomorrow since the EMP is primed and ready to go." Joocie told Nadwe.

"The plan is Meme, Joocie and Tbh go to use the EMP on L4FF, while Me, Dino and you stay behind to watch Socks and make sure that L4FF doesn't escape towards us." Blaza told Nadwe. "Although it's more likely we won't keep an eye on Socks since there isn't anything he can really do anyways." Blaza added under his breath. Nadwe decided he wouldn't tell Blaza about where he had seen Dino today and hoped that Dino would do the same. Meme bit his lip, obviously anxious about the mission.

"Are we sure the EMP will work on L4FF?" He asked as he stopped biting his lip only to begin biting his thumb.

"I don't know," Blaza shrugged. "Whatever happens is whatever happens." Blaza said, walking over to one side of the map and pulling a dagger out of his pocket. He stabbed the dagger onto the spot on the map. A loud splitering sound could be heard as it went through the table. "This is his lab, I found it as we escaped." Blaza explained, "If you guys can get there you might be able to figure out what he's planning." Meme looked at the map and where Blaza had marked.

"Are you sure he won't be there?" Meme asked, "Wont he stop us?"

"If you do this correctly-" Blaza smiled, "He might not even even be able to stop you"

Laff  sitting by himself. L4FF was gone for the time being. It was just Laff, by himself. He glanced at the figure standing by himself. Laff felt pain in his chest. He didn't even know who the person was. L4FF did something to that person. Laff stood up and walked over to the person, he placed a hand on the figure's shoulder. The person flinched and looked at Laff. his eyes pure white with the red swirls.

"What happened to youse?" Laff asked, the person said nothing, Laff placed his other arm on the other shoulder of the person. The figure flinched once more and Laff pulled them into a hug. "It doesn't matter, i'm sorry for whatever has happened to youse." Laff whispered in his ear. The figure awkwardly took a step back.  The figure blinked and Laff noticed that one of their eyes turned brown. They blinked again and the color was gone. Laff sighed and turned around and walked back to where he was sitting. He sighed and sat down. He stared at the wall as he felt L4FF coming back. Laff closed his eyes and blacked out.
