Brother Brother

At school, I sat sadly against my locker when a Feeny puppet appeared around the corner. "What is the matter, Ms. Cooper?" he asked causing me to chuckle. "Perhaps more history homework will cheer you up?"
"Yes, Mr. Feeny, more homework just as we're about to go on summer vacation is what I need," I answer. "I see you got your Feeny puppet back."
Eric appeared, lowering the puppet. "He's back and better than ever," he said. "What's the problem, blondie?"
"Everyone's leaving. Shawn's going with his dad, Topanga's going to summer camp, you're traveling. I'm sad."
"You'll miss me, Cooper?" Eric asked.
"Yeah, now I'll never get to scare any of your dates away."
"Hey, I'm still upset about what you did to Gwen," he admitted.
"Be glad I scared her before she sunk her fangs in her neck," I admit.
"Not before she sunk her fangs into my lips," he joked, he smirked.
"That sounds painful," I reply.
"Why are you so whiney again? You're going back to California with your mom and Zack, that's not a sad thing," he said.
"I'll missy my Shawny," I look to Eric. "And you Matthews family, of course."
Eric grabbed my hands, pulling me to my feet. "Come on, Cooper. If it makes you feel better," he reached in the box he put down, he tossed me a large piece of clothing. "You can have these and think of me."
I unwrap the large clothing. "Your giant underpants?"
"Oh, you know Zack is gonna love them," Eric laughed.
"Yeah, sure," I chuckle, folding them.
"And to pay me back, bring me back a hot girl," he replied.
"Eric, I can't just buy you a hot girl who has the patience to date a dingus. They ran out of those."
"Then, call me when you dumped Shawn and you're eighteen," he said.

Later-
I took a break from basketball, sitting on the court as Cory and Shawn played.
"Okay, fine. Topanga's going to camp. And it's an all-girl camp," Cory said, faking right and shooting the ball in left. "But, I mean, there's no threat there. There's more time for us, right? The golden trio of summer," Cory told us.
"Cory, I'm gonna spend the next two months traveling with my dad," Shawn told him.
"And I'm going to California with my family," I add.
"The boy of summer," Cory replied sadly. "All right. Just me. Fine. You know, I thought you said you were staying home this summer?"
"Well, I am. I mean, that's the beauty of a mobile home-wherever you go, you're home," Shawn answered.
"So you guys leaving too," Cory huffed.
"Well, not for a couple of days," I say. "Are you okay, Cor?"
"Yeah. Yeah. Fine. I mean, I can do without my best friends and my girlfriend for a couple of months, right? I mean, it's not like I can't make new friends," he answered, sitting down next to a woman. The woman looked at Cory and placed a piece of bread in between his lips causing me to snicker. "See?" he asked.

At Eric's party at Chubby's-
I placed Eric's going away gift on the table which caught his attention. "Hey, Cooper. Remember, I'll be waiting for your call when you're eighteen and single."
I chuckled. "Jeez, my childhood dream may come true."
"What's your dream, blondie?" he asked.
"I had a massive crush on you a long time ago, Eric," I reply.
"You did?"
"Duh. You were cute and funny," I reply.
"Still am," he said, running his hand through his hair. "And I think I'd be a better boyfriend than Shawn."
"Funny, Eric," I say.
"I'm not joking. I'll wait to date you."
"Then, you're gonna keep waiting because I love Shawn. But...I'll keep that in mind," I say, walking back to where my friends were sitting.
"And, there is my best girl pal," Cory said, slinging his arm around me and Shawn and began rocking from side to side.
"Take your arm off me, man. You're making me nervous," Shawn said, removing his arm from us.
"Topanga, am I making you nervous?" Cory asked her.
"Uh-huh," she responded, also removing his arm.
Mr. Feeny clinked his glass. "If I may, I have something more to say. Eric, earlier this year, it was doubtful that you would graduate. But you responded to the pressure, applied yourself, and not only grew as a student, but as a person. And I, for one, couldn't be happier."
"Thank you, Mr. Feeny," Eric told him.
"Oh, also, I brought a little gift." Mr. Feeny reached under the table. "I took the liberty to pull this and have it framed." He turned it towards us. "Your high-school diploma."
We all clapped except for Cory who only stayed silent.
"Oh, oh, Mr. Feeny. Oh, thank you. And I know how much you hate to be touched, but give me this one, hm?" Eric asked, hugging Mr. Feeny.
Mr. Feeny patted his arm. "All right. All right, Eric."
Mr. Matthews approached Cory. "Hey. Hey, buddy, don't you want to say something?"
"No, that's okay," Cory replied.
"Come on, Cory. He's your brother. You should say something," Topy told him.
"No, I don't have anything planned."
"Make it up as you go," I add.
Eric spoke up, "You know, I really don't think I could've done this without everyone in this room believing in me. That's why this diploma, which signifies my intelligence, belongs as much to you as it does to...I."
"Me," Mr. Feeny tried to correct.
"I included you."
"Oh, dear," he muttered.
"Hang on. I do have a toast to make," Cory told us before standing. "Attention, everybody." He looked to Eric before us. "To my brother, Eric, who's moving out. And not just for four years, probably forever. And I don't even know him." His voice began to slightly crack. "And now I probably never will." He looked to Eric. "Fifteen years in the same room, Eric. Fifteen years." He stuck his hand out to shake Eric's hand. "Goodbye. I-I hope you have a nice life. I really do." Cory looked to everyone who was still silent. I'm sorry, everyone."

Later, Mom stopped by at the park so I could bid Cory and Topy goodbye. We parked behind Mr. Hunter's trailer before I ran out of the car towards my friends.
"Aw, Cor, you look so down," I sigh.
"Betty, what are you doing here?" Cory asked.
"We're leaving for our roadtrip to California and I saw you here so I thought I'd get to say goodbye," I say.
A bus nearby honked causing Topy to say, "That's my bus."
Another horn rang out. "That's my car," I say.
And another horn. "And that's my house."
"I should get going. I'll miss you," Topy said to Cory, pecking his lips.
"Me too," Cory replied.
"I know we already said goodbye earlier," I turn to Shawn. "But I'll miss you."
"Yeah," Shawn replied, my hands resting in his. "I'll miss you too." His thumb fiddle with the bracelet on my wrist. The bracelet he gave me when he told me he was leaving town. "I'm really glad you're still wearing this."
"Well, I can't say no to free stuff," I joke. "But it means a lot to you so it means a lot to me." I press my lips to his in a long needed kiss. "I love you, Shawn Patrick Hunter."
"I love you too, Elizabeth Anne Cooper," he told me.
Both of us turned to Cory. "So, buddy, I'll, uh," Shawn began.
"We'll see you in a couple of months, okay?" I spoke.
"Yeah. Take care of yourself, guys," Cory told us.
"Yeah, you too," Shawn said. I pulled the three of us into a group hug. "It's just a summer, right? You know, it'll go by quick."
We part ways except for Topy and I who I grab before she was about to get on the bus. "Have fun for me, T," I tell her. "Write me everything."
"I will," she said. "Let me know how everything is in California."
I nod, hugging her tightly. "I'll miss you."
"Me too," she smiled, pulling back. "Bye." She tried to pull back and get on the bus but my hand was still attached to hers like glue. "Uh, Betty?"
"Sorry," I tell her. "But do you think you can sneak me in your suitcase?"
"I don't think your mom and brother would appreciate that."
"Oh," was all I said before pulling my hand back. "Bye."
I began to walk towards the car when I saw Eric pull up. "Betty, have you seen Cory?"
I point towards the park. "Be nice," I tell him.
"I will be," he replied.
"Have fun on your trip, Eric," I tell him, raising my hand for a high five. "I'll actually miss you."
"Well..." he began. "You know what? I'll miss you too."
He high fived my hand but grabbed my hand and pulling in a big hug to the point where I was lifted off the ground. "Eric!"
"Better enjoy this, this probably the best hug you're ever going to get," he told me.
I hugged back as best as I could before being placed back down on my feet.
I wave at him before getting in the car.
