Chapter Eighty-Five
Daniella
Zoe and I pay at the front counter and cling to each other as we exit the nail salon.
"And- and then he got all red in the face when he realized I was listening!" Zoe exclaims, hardly able to tell her story through the joyous tears from laughter running down her face.
"I can't believe he didn't notice!" I match her tone. "Michael is so paranoid when he's writing music. It's like he's nervous to admit he likes doing it."
"Do you think they are really going to name the album 5sos5?" She rolls her eyes, becoming more serious.
We get into the car, giving me some time to think before I respond.
"I don't know." I sigh. The thought came up during one of the writing sessions recently and the boys all seemed to love it despite it being thrown up there as a joke initially. "I suppose they can do whatever they want. As long as at least one of the songs is about us." I shrug. "They think it's funny."
She nods in agreement.
"I'm just glad they are writing as a team sometimes." I add. "Michael has always been his own man and now it seems like they are collaborating more and more. It's slow but at least he's trying."
"Speaking of Michael," she smirks and reaches for the volume knob. "This one is definitely about you." She leans back in her seat and listens.
I laugh. "Actually I think it's about his mom." I listen to is intently as if I have never heard it before. I've heard it a thousand times. "He wrote it after we went to see his step-father in jail." I add. "He was having a really hard time and this just kind of fell out of him."
She nods. "That explains why it's so dark." She stares forward.
I nod. "Nothing about that boy is light."
"Except you." She grabs my hand on the wheel.
"Thanks, Zoe." I smile, keeping my eyes on the road.
"Where are we going?" She asks when I miss the turn.
"Oh shoot. I got distracted. Hang on, let me turn around." I pull into a parking lot and turn the car around. "Sorry," I laugh.
"For a second I thought you were going to kidnap me or something!" We both laugh.
"On second thought," I pull the car into a parking lot outside a park. "Maybe I should kidnap you. I could use a good walk, you?"
Zoe looks around. "Sure." She shrugs.
We walk and talk, leaving our phones in the car to keep the distractions of the outside world away.
I stop.
"What's wrong?" Zoe turns to face me. I hold my hand on my chest. "What? What's wrong?!"
I pull her in for a hug. "I'm just so happy for you." I smile.
"Happy for me? Daniella, what are you talk-" I stop her by spinning her around to see Calum on the dirt path on one knee, the three boys behind him with roses.
Zoe gasps but quickly turns back to face me. "What the hell?!"
I laugh. "Turn around and let him talk. He's got a whole speech."
"Had a whole speech." Cal laughs. "It's all just disappeared now." He wipes his sweaty palm on his shirt. "Zoe Hale, would you make me the happiest man on the earth and be-"
Zoe does not let him finish. "Yes! Yes!" She jumps. She is too excited to even hear the question.
He stands and moves to put the ring on her finger but she is jumping too much for him to be able to. She hugs him, kissing his face all over.
Clapping and cheering all around.
"Alright, we will let you two love birds be," Luke laughs. "See you at home."
Michael walks over and grabs my hand. "C'mere," he smirks. We walk down the path for a little while.
"Where are we going?" I ask. "I parked back that way." I point behind us.
Without warning, he makes a left into the tree line.
"Mike?" I ask with a laugh, slightly concerned.
