01 | Love and Incapability
+ WILL NO ONE EVER SHOW ME HOW TO BE
LONELY? END UP ON MY OWN ALMOST EVERY
NIGHT. [ how to be lonely - rita ora ]
Death lands on the tip of his toes, then slowly lowers himself as he stood on the pinnacle of the tower's conical roof.
He crouches, watching as the blinking lights of the city glimmer as much as the stars in the sky. It's his 502nd year now, and every night, he comes by at the same spot to watch the world drown in its silent, yet busy atmosphere.
He huffs, fishing out a pack of Subway sandwich that he managed to buy right before the store closed. He's famished for sure; after all, his human form needed some type of energy to go on. Death takes a large bite of his olive-packed Greek mix.
"Tastes like sandpaper." He yeets it into the cold night.
He's hungry now, but it'll have to do. Even if he died once more, he'd be reincarnated into a random human's body. The least he could do is not hurt himself. "How do humans eat those?" His face scrunches up in disgust; all fruits to him, are monsters.
The spawns of the devils themselves. His coworker, Frostfire, once quoted (and this is real), "Olives look like a woman's ovaries."
Ovaries, he had replied then, They're bigger, dimwit.
Death yawns, resting his legs against the ledge of the glass, overlooking the metropolis that never sleeps. It's always been his home- Rintis City- the place where he's guarded and reaped, or what his fellow reapers would call, human harvesting.
He didn't like that. He preferred picking up.
After all, humans were such delicate creatures.
A smile bestows upon his face as he thought of the little boy he'd met in the evening. He was sitting on the play-set, alone and distraught. Without much thinking, Death had approached him slowly, tilting his head to raise no suspicion. "Hey kid," He says.
"W-Who are you?" The boy asks, "I've never seen you."
CRAP, the words rang through Death's mind, and he mentally slaps himself. He wasn't supposed to be side-tracking on his mission like this. But the damage has been done. "Uh, yeah. New here." He clears his throat, "You know where the bathroom is?"
The boy's eyebrows furrowed, "Sir, this is a park."
"Don't parks have bathrooms?"
"Some, but not here." Shaking his head, the little lad crosses his arms, judging the man in front of him up-and-down. He definitely isn't a local. His choice of strikingly white apparel would attract attention in a blink of an eye. "You didn't answer my question."
Death clears his throat, "None of your business, kid."
"My name's Totoitoy!" Despite the red flags that Death had unconsciously raised, the boy extends a hand his way, in hopes of showing a little hospitality. He was missing a front tooth, grinning widely. "What's your name? Let's get to know each other!"
Sighing, Death caves in, "I don't have a name."
"Why not?"
"I-I'm adopted." Death comes up with the first thing that popped into his mind. He winces at the poor lie, but the youngster seemed to believe the white defense. "Yeah. Right. Nice to meet you then, Totoitoy. Where are your parents?" He asks, looking around.
"They're not here with me anymore." The reply made the grim reaper's throat dry, and he turns to look at the minor's saddened expression. Oh crap, he thinks, please don't cry.
Fortunately, he didn't. Totoitoy looks up with a smile, laced with nostalgia and also what seems like happiness. "My sister says that at least they're in a better place now!" He wipes his tears with his small fingers, "S-So I'm happy for them.. y-yeah!"
Death reacted to none of this, but rather crouches, trying his best to empathize. As a spirit's that has faced countless of souls with reactions ranging from disbelief to joy, this response was definitely familiar. "Well, what if I told you that you could meet them?"
"W-What?! R-Really?!" His glassy eyes widens.
Nodding, Death uncurls his straight lips into a small smile, barely upwards. "Yep." He answers, taking the boy's hand onto his gloved ones. "I can take you to them, if you'd like?"
Totoitoy's eyes sparked with hope, "Y-Yes please!"
One person down, thousands more to go. Death thinks with an irreversible sigh- it's only half of the day. With this delay, he has no choice but to make the reaping quick. Together, he led the boy to a shaded part of the park, making sure that no one can see them.
"Kid," He lowers his voice, "Are you sure?"
"Y-Yeah! I-I'd do anything to see them once more!"
Death snorts sarcastically, You were bound to be dead anyway. "Alright then," He raises two fingers on Totoitoy's forehead, in the space between his eyes. "Say hello to your parents for me."
"Will do!" The boy grins, happily.
Too happily. Death thinks, as the child's body suddenly goes limp. Before the body hits the ground, though, he scoops him up, feeling the warmness eventually slip away from the small figure.
"Rest in peace." He whispers, orbs flickering.
The sound of childish laughter rings in the air, and Death watches a sliver of Totoitoy running towards two, white souls in the distance, accepting him with open hands. Something stirs in his heart, but he turns his back against the heartwarming scene.
What did they call that? Love, was it?
He clicks his tongue against the roof of his mouth.
"How annoying," He mutters to himself, the southern cold wind tousling against his hair. He looks over his shoulder, looking at the reunited family of three before their light eventually disappeared, marking the erasure of their existence. "Love, huh?"
He leaves the scene with heavy footsteps.
The God of Death is incapable of that.
