Abomination

Finally she could be free.
Kayla had the money needed to buy herself a ticket out of the hell hole that she was supposed to call home.
Being shunned officially by her grandfather was a weight lifted from her shoulders. She was no longer was connected to the coven that despised her and the feeling was mutual.
Kayla Rivers could finally be normal.
No more ties to magic. That was the only perk of not having magic of her own. She could leave, find somewhere without magic and live as a normal human.
Kayla could finally taste the freedom she most desired, the only feeling she was able to express humanly.
Her freedom was so close, just passing that door-
"Where are you going, Mik?" Vanessa stopped in front of the door, arms crossed over her chest.
"Not your business" Kayla told her blankly.
"It is when dad made us learn this new spell" Vanessa told her, raising a piece of paper. "You wanted to be part of this, right? Do magic with us. Now you can"
Kayla wouldn't admit out loud the offer seemed tempting. For years she had tried to experience that rush when doing magic with the people of her coven, to feel that strength it's supposed to give you. She had been denied of such privilege when all she could do when trying to chant was take instead of give. Sure, Kayla felt that rush of magic and at first she thought it normal, but harshly learned the difference.
She wasn't supposed to feel stronger. It was supposed to feel equal strength. The other party wasn't supposed to fall and wither on the floor in pain as she held their hands.
Her stomach growling for days and the lack of sunlight made her learn to not take.
Kayla shook her head, shoving away her thoughts "I can't. I am shunned, Ness"
Vanessa blinked in shock, "What? No, you're joking"
Kayla didn't explain further, "Don't you have a fiancee to melt with?"
Vanessa rolled her eyes, "He's doing some business with his family. I have to meet him in three hours for some final touches for the weeding ceremony"
Kayla didn't bother to hide her disgust by her sister's fiancee and his family "You're making a mistake"
"I love him" Vanessa told her firmly.
"More like you were brainwashed to think you love him" Kayla countered, giving her a look.
No one had voiced out loud the ridiculousness of the family tradition. How the first born girl had to be in a rearranged marriage. How the parents had to choose someone from a powerful coven to continue making their bloodline stronger with each generation.
Kayla had told them that when Michael Sanders had showed up out of nowhere to propose to Vanessa. Kayla had seen firsthand the shock in her sister before she composed with a look from their father and accepted immediately.
Kayla may have bad blood with her siblings, but she still cared for them. She didn't want to see her sister upset in what was supposed to be the happiest moment in her life.
Vanessa sighed, not wanting to discuss more with her sister. They had done that for years. She had made her younger sister's life a living hell just to please her dad but she was getting married, she was going to form her own family. She wanted, no needed to make peace with her family, leave in a good note. And she was starting with her sister.
"So, you're going to leave?" Vanessa asked softly.
Kayla pursed her lips, "It's obvious, isn't it? Besides, everyone hates me either way"
Vanessa winced, looking down in shame "I don't hate you, Mik"
Kayla swallowed a lump in her throat, "Could've fool me"
Vanessa nodded slightly, "One more spell then, little sister. If you're actually leaving, I don't want our last time together in bad blood" She hesitantly held her hand to her sister whose eyes widened in surprise. "Take some. I do admit what you can do scares me but, that's part of who you are. You didn't choose to be born with that abn-" She stopped, scolding herself mentally for what she was about to say. Abnormally "Particular ability. I understand that now. I'm sorry for being such a bitch to you"
Kayla eyed her sister's hand warily, looking between it and her sister's face, hesitantly grabbing her hand. Vanessa flinched slightly but there was no light to indicate Kayla was taking her magic.
Kayla could feel the tug of her sister's magic under her fingertips, urging her to take it, to take it all to herself. She resisted the temptation, keeping the gates closed. Her eyes flickered up to her sister, "You sure?" Vanessa nodded slightly. Kayla took a deep breath, nodding "Alright. Brace yourself"
Vanessa did as told, closing her eyes tightly waiting for the pain to arrive.
Kayla allowed the gates from her body to open, feeling the flow of her sister's magic to fill her veins as their hands began to glow. Don't hurt her, don't hurt her. Don't hurt her. Her eyes squinted at their hands as Vanessa's hand tensed, holding back a whimper.
"Wait..." Vanessa opened her eyes in awe and shock, looking at their hands and the concentrated expression on Kayla's face "It-it doesn't hurt as usual. It-" A wave of pain constricted her body making her unable to breath, falling to her knees. As soon as she touched the floor, the pain stopped, coughing for air, glancing at their no longer glowing hands. "Mik. For a moment... For a minute it didn't hurt" A small, hopeful smile began to form, sighing softly "That's it. You just need to practice"
"Too late" Kayla murmured, dropping her sister's hand, feeling Vanessa's magic running through her veins, for a moment feeling complete. "I'm leaving the supernatural stuff behind and will take a normal life"
Vanessa stood, still feeling a pained prick of pain in her hand where Kayla took her magic. She tried to not let the disappointment show, forcing a small smile "Oh, that's fine too. Want to join us then? One last spell as a family"
Kayla should have said no. She should have ignored her sister's last attempt to mend their relationship and leave like it had been her plan all along.
But like always and unable to deny it to herself, Kayla still wanted her family's approval. Their love.
And so she nodded.
She should have stick to her plan.
That way, she wouldn't have to suffer a trauma so deep it would affect her in a long run of her life.

The sisters walked inside the large studio of the house. It was the place they all used to practice witchcraft.
And where a big salt circle had been placed by the oldest of the Rivers' children.
Edward glanced at his sisters as he poured the last grain of salt, "Well, well, well, but if it isn't the prodigy daughter and the unwanted one finally gracing us with their presence"
Kayla, like always maintained a cold front while facing her brother though neither of them knew how her heart skipped a beat and her hands became sweaty and slightly began to shake.
No one knew how much Kayla feared her own brother.
And that was a secret she was willing to take with her to the grave.
"Shut up, Ed" Vanessa snapped, "We're here, aren't we? Where's dad?"
"Went for mom" Markus, the youngest male child spoke from where he stood, reading the spell his dad had given him with a frown. "They're coming in a moment"
Kayla frowned suspiciously, "They shunned me. Why do they want to do magic with me?" Markus glanced at Edward. Edward simply smirked. Kayla realized "You're up to something"
"I knew intelligence was part of being a psychopath, little sister" Edward told her, chuckling sarcastically.
Kayla looked at Vanessa incredulously "You tricked me"
Vanessa looked between her siblings nervously, "What? No. I just... I do really want to do magic with you"
Kayla glared at her sister, an unnatural wind starting to blow their hair back. Vanessa flinched as the lights began to flicker.
Markus gasped, throwing his hands up, "Vis sera portus!"
All the doors and windows slammed shut.
"Markus!" Vanessa exclaimed in shock.
"I'm sorry" Markus whispered, glancing at his younger sister "I'm sorry, Kay-Kay. They asked me too"
"Let me guess" Kayla began sarcastically, breathing heavily in fear "Your dad"
"Motus"
Kayla's body found herself restrained as her stepfather's voice rang through the air, falling to her knees. She gasped in fear, meeting Vanessa's eyes.
"Dad!" Vanessa exclaimed in horror. "What are you doing? Grandma? Granddad?"
Kayla barely moved her head, noticing her grandparents walking inside the room, followed by a smug looking Caleb and smirking Louisa and a guilty Cecily.
"Mom?" Kayla whispered with a frown.
Alexander scowled, "Shut up, devil spawn. Ad somnus"
Kayla's eyes closed, falling to the ground asleep. The wind she caused dying.
Vanessa looked at her unflinching family "What the hell is wrong with you?!"
Alexander gave her a furious look "I told you to bring her here, not to let her filthy hands to take and taint your magic, Vanessa! It's there anything you can do right?"
"Alex!" Cecily snapped, "She's your daughter. Don't talk to her that way"
"Um..." Markus raised his hand shyly, "Are we doing the spell or not?"
"Yes, Markus" Alexander told him kindly, nodding, glancing at his wife with a scowl "At least one of my children have his priorities set straight"
Louisa rolled her eyes, "You two are dramatic" She walked closer to her unconscious niece, "Let me just say goodbye to my niece. I'm going to miss her"
No one missed how sarcastic she sounded, paired with a smirk as she grabbed the girl's arms, dragging her to the middle of the salt circle.
Vanessa looked worried, "What's going on?"
Alexander pulled out a rounded object, placing it on a table. He didn't answer his daughter "Get to a circle, everyone" Everyone did as told, except for Vanessa who kept her eyes on her sleeping sister. Edward annoyed, grabbed Vanessa's arm and pulled her to her place on the circle, giving her a look to behave. Alexander raised his hands, lighting up the candles surrounding the salt circle in order to keep Kayla confided inside "Incendia"
"Alex.... There has to be another way" Cecily pleaded, glancing at her daughter. "She has done nothing wrong"
Alexander ignored her, "This spell will finally protect you all from this... girl's destructive powers. It took some years but I finally found it. She's no longer going to hurt you, taint your magic by using it herself. She will no longer be a threat"
"Please..." Cecily told him.
Alexander waved a hand toward the sleeping girl, "Surgere"
With a small gasp, Kayla bolted straight up, breathing heavily, looking at the family surrounding her with lit candles around her, "What-?"
"You wanted so much to reunite with the scum you call your father, didn't you?" Alexander asked, bringing her to look at him. "We can make it happen"
"He's dead" Kayla told him in a whisper, afraid that if she raised her voice he'd inflict pain to her. She knew that her ability to take magic could save her, make her immune against her family's magic used on her but since little she learned to not take that magic and to endure the pain from their spells or things could become much worse for her as they could lock her up on the darkness for much longer periods of time.
Alexander shrugged carelessly, "It'd be a nice topic of conversation when you're dead. Something to bond over with him"
Kayla looked toward her mom, "What's he talking about?"
Cecily avoided looking at her daughter, knowing she had read her diaries about Kai and would know what it meant "A world entirely for you, Mikayla" Kayla's breath hitched in her throat in realization "It's better than death, sweetie"
"Being alone is better than dying?" Kayla asked incredulously, feeling a burn behind her eyes and tears pricking at the corner of her eyes. Don't do it. Being alone is worse. Being in the dark is as scary as the thought of death. Don't do it. Don't send me there...
"Enough" Alexander snapped. "Start chanting. We don't want to give her a chance to escape. Now!"
Eagerly, Edward began to chant along his father "Sanguinem filio, sanguinem effurgarex perpetuum" Louisa and Caleb exchanged a look, nodding, joining the father and son's chanting "Sanguinem filio, sanguinem effurgarex perpetuum" Andrew and Donna and Markus joined them "Phasmatos filio, Phasmatos effurgarex perpetuum"
Kayla could feel the spike of magic from between the coven, shaking her head in fear, looking at her family "No, no, no. Don't do this! Mom! Nessie, please!"
Vanessa and Cecily exchanged troubled looks before they felt their arms being grabbed. Vanessa by her brother and Cecily by her mother, both women feeling their magic connecting with theirs, strengthening the spell.
"Sanguinem filio, sanguinem effurgarex perpetuum. Sanguinem filio, sanguinem effurgarex perpetuum. Phasmatos filio, Phasmatos effurgarex perpetuum"
Scared of the spell actually working and sending her to isolation like she read happened to her dad in her mom's diary and how he felt about it, feeling like he could lose his mind, Kayla cried in fear, closing her eyes, instinctively allowing the flow of the magic coursing through the air thanks to her family's concentrated magic that somehow wasn't working to send her away enter her body. Her arms and legs began to glow as she siphoned both magic from the house and the spell to herself, letting it fill her and act according to her fears.
Stop, stop, stop. Please, please, please. I don't wanna be alone. I don't wanna, I don't wanna...
It was like a bubble popping up, fear and anger curling and expanding inside her, grabbing the sides of her head, tugging and pulling at her hair, feeling like she'd explode, the chanting still echoing in her ears, no longer able to handle the pressure building up inside her, not seeing the candles flare up dangerously with her thoughts and heavy breathing.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry for being an abomination.
Kayla preferred to die than to being alone.
And with that thought, she let go.
