Chapter twenty-seven

Did I mention I was petty?

Well kissing another guy to get one's boyfriend jealous was the most petty thing one could do in a game like spin the bottle, but I did it anyway and I wasn't apologetic about it. Peter needed to feel the same way I felt. Jealous.

Charles and I pulled apart when one minute elapsed and I used the back of my hand to wipe my lips. This was actually my first kiss. All those while I used to watch actors kiss on those Telemundo movies aunt Caro and her daughters love to binge watch, I used to wonder what pleasure those actors derived from it. I thought it was disgusting—the tongue touching and the saliva exchange. Gross! But to be honest, it wasn't that bad kissing Charles. I actually did enjoy it. I'm guessing it wasn't Charles first time because he was a pretty good kisser. I wonder if he thought the same about me.

I had my seat and threw a glance at Peter. His skin complexion had turned red and he was stroking his chin, with an obviously feigned smile plastered on his face. No matter the smile on his face, I could still see him fuming with jealousy. That was what I wanted anyway. So mission accomplished. There was really nothing like sweet revenge.

The game continued but never for once did the bottle point in either my direction or Peter's.

Throughout the game, Peter never spared me a glance and for some reason, my conscience pricked me. I began to feel a deep sense of regret doing what I did. I kissed Charles without even thinking of the consequences of my action. What if Peter breaks up with me because of what I did? That was the last thing I wanted.

Sooner than expected, some student came to inform us that the dossier was ready and that we should all go to our teacher's staffroom to collect it. On hearing that, we ended the game and ss2B students went to their teacher's staffroom to get their dossier, while we went to ours.

Walking out of Mr Nnamdi's staffroom, I sneaked a peek at my result and what I saw wasn't so good. I had just one A, two B's and the rest were C's. I know that might sound good enough, but my reason for not being satisfied with the result was the fact that I got A in an irrelevant subject, which was Food and Nutrition. Why would I get an A in Food and Nutrition when there are other relevant subject like Literature and Maths?

"Hey Daniella! What's up? How was your result?" I looked around and saw it was Adam.

"Uh, not bad, but not so good either. Just there." I replied with a shrug.

"Can I see?"

"Oh God Adam! I've kept it in my bag already." I said a bit whiny.

"No problem. So what were your grades in each subject?"

"Well I got one A, two B's and the rest were C's."

"That's okay na. What subject did you get A and B?" Adam probed further.

"I got B in Civic Education and Economics and A in Food and nut. Food and nut Adam!" I made sure to add more dramatic effect to my last statement and that made Adam chuckle. "So what about you?"

"Well, my result was satisfactory. I got six B's and four C's. I had no A."

"Your result is still better than mine."

"Uh, I know." He gave me a duh look.

I smacked his arm. "You're not okay."

We both laughed.

"So have you seen Gbemi?" I asked, looking around.

"Yeah, she's still on the queue to collect her result." Adam said. Just then, Gbemi ran towards us looking so excited. I wondered what the reason for her excitement was.

"How was your result?" Gbemi asked Adam and me immediately she got to where we were.

I looked at Adam in a way that suggested he goes first.

"How was yours?" Adam replied Gbemi with the same question.

"It was good. I had two A's and two B's." Gbemi said smiling. Hearing her result, I felt like the dullest amongst them and because of that, I made a mental note to work harder next term so that I would come out with a better result.

"That's very good." Adam congratulated her. "Well as for me, I had no A. Just six B's and the rest were C's."

"Ah that's even better than mine." Gbemi remarked. "What of you Daniella? You've been silent. Hope your result was good too."

I curved my lips downwards and was going to reply but Adam beat me to it.

"Yeah it was good too. She had one A and two B's."

"Who asked you Adam?" I said. "Don't I have a mouth of my own?"

"It appeared you weren't gonna use it." Adam shrugged his shoulders.

"That doesn't make you my mouthpiece, oga."

"Ah sorry o. No need to get all upset."

"Well that wasn't a bad result Daniella." Gbemi remarked.

"Thank you jare." I said to Gbemi.

We trio started to stroll towards the school gate. I searched around with my eyes to see if Peter was anywhere around. I hadn't seen him since we ended the game and today was our last day in school, so I couldn't possibly leave school without seeing him. I was feeling remorseful about what I did. I had realised kissing Charles in front of him was unthinkable of me and he deserved an apology from me.

"Anything the matter Daniella? Are you looking for someone?" Adam voice jolted me back to their presence.

"Uh... no, I mean yes. Have you guys seen Peter around?" I asked.

"No, why?" Adam said.

"Aha! That reminds me: what you did back there, what was that all about?" Gbemi asked.

"What did I do?" I cocked one of my eyebrows in puzzlement.

"You kissing Charles, what was that?" Gbemi gesticulated while she spoke.

"What! Daniella kissed Charles?" Adam asked in utter surprise.

"That was me just trying to get Peter jealous and I regret it now. Where's he? I need to see him."

"I have no idea. But why would you even try to get Peter jealous?" Gbemi asked.

"That doesn't matter now. I just really need to find Peter and apologise."

"Hullo! Can someone fill me in on what's going on here. I'm lost." Adam demanded and Gbemi started to narrate everything that happened in the spin the bottle game to him, while I kept searching frantically for Peter with my eyes.

"Wow! Peter must be really angry with you Daniella." Adam said.

"I'm sure he is. That's probably why we haven't seen him since." Gbemi added.

We trio went back into the school to look for Peter. I asked most of his friends if they had an idea of his whereabout, but I didn't get any positive feedbacks from any until I asked his seat partner, Tobi, who told me that Peter had gone home. Hearing the news, I was heartbroken. I was so sad that Peter left school on the last day of vacation without me. I must have really hurt him. Oh poor Peter, I'm so sorry.

When I got back home from school, I immediately changed into my house wear and took out my phone from where I usually kept it. I opened my whatsapp to check if Peter was online. Luckily, he was. Immediately I dropped a message.

Why did you leave school without your baby boo?

The message got delivered to him but he didn't read it. A minute passed. Two minutes. Three minutes, Peter still hadn't read my message and he was online. Then Peter did something that made me realise he was practically ignoring me. He posted on his whatsapp status saying: Thank God the term is over. I immediately replied to the status.

I'm sure you'd miss me.

This boy still didn't reply me. In fact this time, he left my message with the blue tick which indicated that the message had been read. This made me hurt and tears began to well up in my eyes.

Please answer me.

As soon as I entered the text, he read it but still, no reply. I blinked and the tears in my eyes dropped on my phone screen. I wiped off the tears from the screen with my clothes, shut my phone off and hid it in the usual place. Wiping off every trace of tears from my eyes, I went out of the room to do some chores.

While I did my chores, I thought of how I was going to leave this house to meet Peter. I needed to see him one on one to apologise. What lie could I tell aunty Caro now to leave this house?

Later in the night, I served aunt Caro her semo and vegetable soup in the living room where she and her daughters were watching their favourite channel—Telemundo.

"Ehhe mummy, we want to get Christmas clothes o." Amanda said as I was going to walk out of the living room.

I halted in my tracks immediately.

"Christmas clothes ke? Do you think you're still babies that you'd be buying Christmas cloth?" Aunt Caro asked as she washed her hand to eat her semo.

"Ah mummy, it's not only babies that need Christmas clothes o." Annabelle sounded whiny.

"Mummy forget that we're sixteen. We still need Christmas clothes. We don't even have much clothes again." Amanda added.

"Okay I've heard." Aunty Caro said as she swallowed a small ball of semo.

"Mummy so can you give us the money today 'cause we want to buy it tomorrow?" Amanda asked.

"Because I plug the money from tree na. Don't you have a father? When he comes back from work, ask him. If he gives you, I'd add to it." Aunt Caro said.

"And we need to get shoes too," Annabelle said, "So you and dad would give us like twenty thousand naira each. Clothes and shoes are expensive in the market these days."

Aunt Caro snorted with a chuckle. "Why didn't you just say one million naira?"

"No mum, Annabelle is right. Quality clothes and shoes are quite expensive in the market. We asked for the price of one fine shoe yesterday and the seller told us ten thousand naira last." Amanda said.

"Tell that to your father when he comes back o. Don't disturb me. I'm eating." Aunt Caro sounded like she was getting frustrated.

Immediately, an idea popped up in my head. I could ask aunt Caro for money to buy Christmas clothes and then if she gave me, I could use that opportunity to go to the market and also make it to Peter's house. That seemed like a good idea to me.

I scratched my head as I said. "Ma, me too. I need money for Christmas cloth."

All three heads snapped at me. The glare I caught on Annabelle's face could have sent one six feet beneath.

"Have you showed me your result?" Aunt Caro asked.

The expression on my face was that of surprise. "Oh I forgot!"

"You even have the gut to tell me you forgot."

"I'm sorry ma."

"Or you failed?" Aunt Caro asked, curving one side of her lips upward.

"No ma, I—"

"Just shut up and bring your dossier!" Aunt Caro cut me off.

I went straight to my room to get the result and I brought it to her.

"Can't you see I'm eating?" Aunt Caro asked tartly as I handed her the result. "Common take this stupid thing out of my sight! Show me the result when I'm done eating."

Annoying goat! I cussed her in my mind. She sure just wanted to get on my nerves. I walked out of the living room with my result and went straight to my room.

I hissed as I shut the door to my room. I tossed the dossier on my bed and brought out my phone from its hidden place. I turned it on and checked to see if I had gotten any message from Peter. Still no message. I felt down.

The following afternoon, I was home alone. Aunt Caro and the twins had gone out together. Before they left, aunt Caro gave me some instruction to wash her clothes, clean the house and prepare something for her to eat before she got back. I know she gave me those task just to keep me in the house. But today was my only chance to go to Peter's house, so I managed to do all the chores quickly. Once I was doing cooking, I left for Peter's house.

When I got to his house, I let out a breath before knocking on the door. I was going to knock for the third time when I head the sound of footsteps approaching towards the door from the other end.

"Who's there?" Peter drawled lazily.

I kept mute and waited for him to open the door. The door cracked open and I was face to face with Peter. He was putting on a grey hoodie and a grey sweatpants.

"Hey." Peter mumbled under his breath and walked away from the doorway, leaving me standing outside just like the first time I visited. "When you get in, please shut the door behind you." He said coldly as he made his way upstairs.

I quickly entered into the house and followed him up the stairs quietly. The walls of the hallway upstairs were cream and the floor was carpeted. There were four doors in the hallway.

Peter opened one of the doors and got in. I guessed that was the door to his room. I followed him shyly and like I guessed, it was his room. I was amazed by the sight. It was so neat and tidy, off white walls with purple embellishments. A made up bed with a purple bedspread, a study desk piled high with books. An acoustic guitar was kept at one corner of the room. A small television mounted on the wall opposite his bed.

"Your room is so... so neat." I complimented.

Peter plopped down on his bed and fixed his eyes on the TV. He was watching a football match.

"Lemme guess, your favourite colour is purple." I more of asked than said.

He ignored me.

I moved towards his study desk and ran my hands down the pile of books. Some were textbooks while some were novels. I picked up one of the novels. The title was Master Of The Game.

"Can you not touch anything?" Peter requested and I looked at him with a smile on my face. His eyes were still fixed on the TV.

"So you read novels?" I asked, hoping he wouldn't ignore me.

"Romance, no. Horror or mystery, yes." He answered, still not sparing me a glance.

I didn't ask the genre you read. I wanted to say but instead, I said, "I'm sorry."

"Dammit, pass the ball!" Peter bellowed, hitting the bed. He was ignoring me because of a football match! How dare he! I searched for the TV remote with my eyes. When I spotted the remote, I grabbed it and switched off the TV.

Finally Peter's eyes met mine. He looked at me with a glare. "What's that?" He asked, cocking an eyebrow at me.

I rolled my eyes. "Can you stop ignoring me. It's annoying."

"I don't care." He gave me a duh look. "Now can you switch on the TV?"

"No!" I said firmly.

He hissed and got up from the bed immediately. He tried to get the remote from my hand, but I gripped it firmly to make sure he didn't. In a bit to get the remote from my hand, he hugged me from behind and we both landed sideways on the bed, laughing hysterically.

Peter's arms were still wrapped around me when our laughter subsided. His body pressed against mine stimulated my femalehood.

"I missed you." Peter confessed and I froze in his arms. Did Peter just say he misses me?

I turned around to face him, his arms were still around me. "I missed you too. Look Peter, I'm so sorry for kissing Charles. I wasn't in—"

"Shh." Peter placed his index finger on my lips. "You're talking too much."

"I just want you to forgive me. I'm sorry." I said breathlessly.

"Can you end this forgiveness talk and just kiss me." Peter's voice sounded so deep when he said that.

My heart skipped a beat. I didn't expect him to be so straightforward about me kissing him.

Peter lifted up my chin and fixed his gaze on my lips. Slowly, his head inched closer to mine and he licked his pink lips before our lips touched.
