Chapter 15 - Family Above All

Abby paid the taxi driver before climbing out of the taxi and standing before the deserted building as the taxi driver drove off. She stared at the building and recalled all the times she and Tanya would come here to watch Tia for her ballet practice.

Tia would always laugh so delightedly when she'd do the positions properly, sometimes even practicing them at their house in the backyard.

Times had seemed simpler then.

Abby exhales deeply before making her way into the building.

"Abby?!" Tia shouted as Abby slipped in through the broken window and made her way to the room with the mirrors. She knows this place like this back of her hand, even in its dilapidated state. "Abby, please–!" Tia's voice comments as Abby bursts into the room, expecting to see her sister only to find that she wasn't anywhere inside.

"Ah Abby, so you've finally decided to join me" James says sinisterly as he revealed the recorder and cellphones in his hands, playing the recording of Tia shouting for her.

"Abby?! Abby please just pick up your phone!" her sister's voice shouted in distress.

"I've been waiting for you!" he says with a sinister grin before crushing Tia's phone into dust as Abby looked at him in shock at this.

He tricked her. Tia wasn't here.

He'd used a recording of her sister and her phone to lure her into coming here. Abby turns to run out the room only for him to block her path as she inhales sharply at this, backing away from him in fear.

"Y-You tricked me" she states fearfully.

"I knew that if your sister called then you'd come running" he admits with a devil-may-care smirk and shrug.

He exploited her love for her sister. Abby isn't at all surprised by this. He's disgusting this way.

She pulls out her pepper spray and sprays him in the face as he screamed at this, covering his eyes as if in pain as she tried to run again only for James to start laughing maniacally almost immediately, chilling her to bone.

"You think pepper spray can stop me? Really Abby?" he asks mockingly before appearing behind her and then knocking her into some of the mirrors as if she were nothing but a fly. "I'm a little disappointed in you to be entirely honest" he added in a somewhat condescending manner, wiping the pepper spray from his eyes.

Abby screams right before colliding into the mirrors and cutting her hand on the broken glass when she tried to sit up. She touches the back of her head with her other hand and feels something warm and sticky and when she draws them back her fingers are coated in blood.

Now both of her hands are bloody.

Wonderful.

"Now this a sight!" he says grandly as he pulled out a video-camera and started recording her. "What a beautiful and visually dynamic view this is turning out to be" he says, "I chose my stage well" he further added as he grabbed her right hand, "it's too bad he didn't have the strength to turn you" he says, "instead he kept you his fragile little human" he mocks as Abby drew her bloody hand back from him, glaring at him as she did. "It's cruel really" he comments before snapping her femur bone in two as both Abby screamed bloody murder at this.

Excruciating isn't even the right word to describe it.

"Tell Edward how much it hurts" he says as he continued recording her, all but shoving the camera in her face this time around, "Tell him to avenge you! Tell him!" he shouted.

"No! Edward...d-don't!" Abby cries out, knowing that doing that would be doing exactly what James wanted.

He wanted the thrill of torturing Abby and having Edward hunt him down because of this.

She didn't want to give him the satisfaction.

"Tell him! TELL HIM!" James shouted just before he's knocked halfway across the room.

Abby turns to face the sight, shaking from the excruciating pain of having her leg snapped like a piece of celery.

"E-Edward" she whispers in a pained and yet relieved tone when she spots him.

James charges at Edward, pinning him to one of the many mirrors as Abby watched on helplessly.

"You're alone...because you're the fastest" James says just before shoving Edward into the mirror as the mirror cracked from the force while James choked him, "but not stronger" he adds mockingly.

"I'm strong enough to kill you" Edward informs him before kicking him back into one of the many mirrors.

He speeds over to Abby and takes her into his arms, ready to get her to safety only for James to grab him by the leg and throw him into a window ceasement. Abby cries out when she rolled out of Edward's arms and hit the ground with a thud.

James speeds over to her and smirks cruelly as he looked at Edward before sinking his fangs into Abby's arm.

"NO!" Edward shouts in anguish as Abby screamed in agony at this as the venom of his bite started coursing through her veins.

It felt like she was being burned from the inside out.

This was a thousand times more painful than getting her leg snapped.

Oh God, everything hurt!

It all hurt so much!

Edward climbs out of the window ceasement that James had thrown him in and leaps off of it, diving at James as he plowed him through the floorboards while Abby tried to bite on her lower lip to keep from screaming in pain.

She was thrashing about wildly on the floor while Edward and James fought wildly in the background.

Everything was a blur to her at that point as tears fell from her eyes.

She was in so much pain. Pain beyond anything that she had experienced in all her 17 years of life.

"It hurts! Oh God, it hurts so much!" Abby cries out while Edward and James continued to fight in the background.

She doesn't even register the arrival of the other Cullens until she hears James' loud screams after Edward has bitten off a piece of his flesh. Carlisle stops him from killing James in revenge for how James has hurt Abby.

"Abby!" Alice said as she made her way toward her. "Don't worry Abby, Carlisle will help you!" she says to the woman as she took her into her arms, fighting to ignore the strong scent of Abby's blood since she lay in a puddle of her own blood.

Carlisle and Edward raced to Abby's sides as Abby cried out in agony at the unimaginable and inexplicable pain. She was sweating profusely at this point and she was verging on delirium.

"Her femoral artery's been severed" Carlisle reveals to his family. "She's losing too much blood" he says in concern.

"It's on fire! My arm!" Abby cried out in pain.

"Venom" Edward states in fear for Abby's life.

"You have to make a choice" Carlisle informs Edward, "either you let the change happen–"

"No!" Edward protested immediately.

"It's going to happen" Alice informs them, "I've seen it" she added in conviction.

"It doesn't have to be that way" Edward retorts.

"Alice, find me a tourniquet" Carlisle says to her,  "a rag or a shirt" he says.

Alice holds her nose before ripping the sleeve of her blouse and handing it to Carlisle who then used it to stop the bleeding of Abby's leg.

"Alice!" Jasper calls for her, needing her help with killing James.

Alice lowered Abby's head gently onto the ground before racing over to help Jasper and Emmett with James, ripping his head off as she did.

"It burns!" Abby screams, referring to the venom shooting through her bloodstream.

"The other choice is that you can try to suck the venom out" Carlisle explains to Edward.

"I-I won't be able to stop" Edward shakes his head at this.

"Find the will to stop, son" Carlisle says to him, "but choose quickly because she only has a few minutes left" he says as Abby continued to thrash in pain.

The look on Edward's face was torment if ever there was one.

"It's alright Abby" Edward says as he takes ahold her arm, "I'll make it go away" he promises the love of his life before he starts sucking the venom from her arm.

Slowly but surely the pain starts to recede as Abby exhales in relief at this but Edward doesn't stop drinking.

"Stop" Carlisle says, "her blood is clean" he says, "you're killing her!" he says to Edward.

Edward's bloodlust was strong though. Much too strong and that's when Abby starts to lose consciousness.

"Edward, you have to STOP!" Carlisle shouts as Edward drew back from Abby's arm with a lot of difficulty, his mouth coated in her blood as he looked at the unconscious Abby in horror at what he'd done.

"Abby–" he says in distress.

"She's alive" Carlisle reassured him when he touched her neck, feeling her weak pulse.

Her heart was beating very weakly but she was still alive.

Tia and Edward sat in opposite corners of the hospital room as they waited for Abby to wake up. It's been exactly 3 days since Abby was brought to the hospital and she still had yet to wake up.

Viv was outside talking with Carlisle as the man tried to calm the distressed woman down when she sobbed in fear for her niece's life, fearing that she would lose Abby just as she lost Tanya.

Abby lay in bed with an oxygen mask covering the lower half of her face as the steady sound of her heartbeat filled the room. Her chest rose and fell with each breath that she took.

"Do you know what I hate?" Tia says to Edward for the first time in 3 days, "I hate that whatever you said or did to her made her leave like she did and get hurt like this" she adds, "but most of all I hate that when she wakes up she'll forgive you" she says as Edward met Tia's eyes in shame at this.

"I didn't–" he starts but she raises a hand to silence him.

"I liked you, Edward, I thought you were good for my sister" she says, "but now?" she adds, "now I just want you as far away from her as possible" she comments honestly.

Tia rose from her seat as she headed for the door. Initially, she'd liked how happy Edward made her sister since Abby was usually so quiet about anything that she struggled with, including their mom's death.

Abby felt that it was her responsibility to watch out for her aunt and sister and that – unfortunately – meant that she always tried repressing her own emotions and struggles so that she could help her aunt and sister when they struggled with theirs.

"Tia" Edward calls for her as she turned to face him over her shoulder with no expression on her face. "I'm sorry" he adds solemnly.

"I wish sorry were good enough" Tia retorts coldly, "but it's not" she says before heading out the hospital room as Edward took Abby's hand into his own.

"She's right" he murmurs, feeling guilty and tormented. "Sorry doesn't begin to cover it" he says.

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

The first thing Abby did when she woke up was reach for whatever was in her nose only for a tender hand to stop her.

"Sweetheart, you're finally awake" a teary-eyed Viv says as Abby blinked to try and focus her vision and see her aunt better, knowing that voice anywhere.

"Aunt Viv?" Abby croaks out as she shakily removed the oxygen mask from her face, "Edward?" she asks drowsily.

"He's asleep" a red-eyed Viv added, gesturing over to the chair that Edward was 'sleeping' in. "He never leaves" she reveals to her niece in a whisper so he couldn't hear.

"What...What happened?" Abby asks even though it was all starting to come back to her now that she's awake.

She just wants to hear what the cover story that her aunt was told was.

"Sweetheart, you fell down two flights of stairs and through a window" Viv whispers tenderly. "Edward managed to track you down here" she explains, "Dr. Cullen was the one who brought him down because apparently Edward was too distressed to drive" she reveals, "you went to their hotel but you tripped on the stairs" she says with a whimper. "You almost died" she says as she tearfully caressed Abby's cheek.

Abby would give whoever came up with that cover story some credit because it was actually somewhat believable.

Although it does paint her out to be incredibly clumsy.

"I'm sorry" Abby says, "for scaring you guys. For–"

"Shh, swetheart" Viv says, "you just focus on getting better" she comments tenderly as her phone rings. "It's Charlie calling again" she adds, "I'll be right back" she promises, "let me also go tell your sister that you're awake or she'll kill me" she says as Abby nods at this with a faint smile. Viv kisses her forehead. "I'm glad you're awake Abby" she added as Abby nodded slowly at this before her aunt left the room.

As soon as her aunt is out the room Edward is by her side in an instant. He looks at her in guilt before kissing her forehead soothingly.

"Is James...did you––?" she trails off, searching for the right words to say and a way to ask as her heart rate picked up.

"We took care of him" he says with a nod as he took her hand into his own and caressed it. It works in soothing her and calming her down, "and the woman, Victoria, she ran off" he admits.

Abby exhales in relief at this.

It is a cause for concern that Victoria managed to get away but as long as James is gone then Abby is just happy that they live another day.

"I'm alive because of you" she says.

"You're in here because of me" he murmurs as he strokes her face tenderly, looking incredibly saddened and guilty. "The worst part of it – was fearing that I wouldn't be able to stop. I could have killed you" he says, "I'm so sorry" he adds, "in fact sorry doesn't even–"

Abby places a finger over his lips to silence him as their gazes lock.

Tia bursts into the room, looking wide eyed and frantic as Abby turned to face her with a smile. "Tia–"

"Abby, you're awake!" Tia comments happily. "You're finally awake!" she adds as she made her way toward her sister to stand on the other side of her bed, across from Edward. "Thank goodness you're awake" she says as she starts to cry as Abby starts to cry too.

The two sisters embrace as much as they are able given the machines that Abby was still hooked up to.

"I'm sorry" Abby says with a brokenhearted sob, referring to her harsh words when she left Forks.

"It's okay" Tia says with a sniffle, "that's all water under the bridge now" she says with tearful smile, drawing back to smile at her sister after kissing her forehead, "I'm just relieved that you're awake" she admits, "I was so scared" she says solemnly.

"Let me give you both some privacy" Edward said, stepping out the room as Tia crossed her arms over her chest at this.

Abby glanced between them, noting the frostiness between them.

"What's with the frosty exchange?" Abby asks her sister, noting how cold her sister is to Edward after he's walked out her hospital room to give them privacy.

"Your boyfriend is a dumbass" Tia replies with an angry huff.

"Tia!"

"What? He is!" Tia defends her opinion, "if he hadn't upset you then we wouldn't be here to begin with" she adds, "you wouldn't have almost died if you didn't come here!" she hisses out angrily.

"Tia–" Abby sighs.

"You can say what you you wanna say, Abby, but it doesn't change what almost happened because of him" Tia says stubbornly as she crossed her arms over her chest at this. "As if it's not bad enough that mom..." she trails off as tears fill her eyes as Abby squeezes her hand in comfort. "I just...the last 3 days have been really hard on me" she admits with a sad sigh and a slight sniffle.

"I can't imagine how difficult it must have been for you" Abby says gently, "I'm so sorry for putting all of you through that" she adds, "but I want you to know that I'm right here" Abby says, "I'm okay" she reassures her sister. "Am I...on morphine? Because last I remembered I had a broken leg" she says, feeling a little weird when she realizes that she felt no pain.

"Oh heck yeah" Tia says with a nod, "they gave you the good stuff too" Tia teases her, "guaranteed to keep you airy and light" she adds in a sing-song manner, causing Abby to chuckle at this.

"How are you feeling?" she asks her sister.

"Me? How are you feeling?" Tia directs to her instead. "You've been asleep for 3 days. Today is the 4th day since your accident" she says.

"Really?" Abby says in shock as her eyes nearly bulge out of her sockets at this.

"Yeah" Tia nods, "the best 3 days of my life by the way" she adds sarcastically.

"Sorry" Abby says sheepishly, "I didn't mean for any of this to happen" she adds solemnly.

She hadn't meant for James to catch a whiff of her scent and she sure as hell hadn't meant to nearly die and cause her family and friends agony in the process.

"I know" Tia reassures her sister as she takes her hand into her own. "Mei wanted me to call her as soon as you woke up so let me go do that while you rest" she says as Abby nodded at this.

Tia gives her another kiss on the forehead.

"Tia" she calls for her sister as Tia turned to face her, "you'll forgive Edward eventually, right? He didn't mean for any of this to happen either" she promises to her sister.

It's important to her that two of the most important people in her life got along or things could be a little difficult to navigate.

"Don't hold your breath on that one, sis" Tia replies, "I'm still very much pissed off" she admits, "because I explicitly remember telling him never to hurt you" she says with a frown at his failure to do so.

"This is just as much my fault" Abby says, thinking of how she was the one who went to James unaccompanied by anyone, but of course Tia doesn't know this. "I'm the one who left Forks, remember?" she says to her sister.

"You wouldn't have left if you two hadn't had your argument" Tia points out to her older sister, "look Abby, if he wants my forgiveness then he's got to know that he has a long way to go when it comes to proving it to me" she adds, "I want to see that he's really trying to rectify his mistake" she says, "so if he wants my forgiveness then he's gotta be willing to earn it" Tia added before leaving the hospital room.

A/N: Sorry for the long wait. I've been busy with some stuff. I trust that you're all enjoying Abby and Edward's story so far and I hope that you enjoyed this chapter and all that it had to offer✌️
