Chapter Twenty Eight: Pool Confessions
The smell of chlorine was thick in the steamy air. Hannah swam another lap around the pool while I soaked in the hot tub. The hot water lapped against the cement wall. She hadn't stopped swimming for an hour. Lap after lap she kept kicking her feet and swinging her arms through the water. All I was focused on was telling Hannah about Anton, and I was slowly growing impatient.
It had been the only thing on my mind since last night. Anton hadn't said anything to me about telling Ty, in fact I hadn't seen him since yesterday and I didn't care to. I figured he was off doing something evil for his 'boss.'
Hannah blew out a breath of air and climbed up the ladder, snapping me out of my thoughts. She jumped in the hot tub with me and smiled.
"Phew, that felt good." She threw her head back with a satisfied smiled and rested against a metal rail that came down in the middle of of the hot tubs stairs.
I laughed at her. "I don't know how it could possibly feel good, but whatever you say."
Hannah didn't respond she just grinned wider, keeping her eyes closed and letting her heart rate slow down. She sank deeper into the hot tub until it came up to her neck and the tips of her blond hair skimmed the bubbling water.
We were silent for a while. I kept wanting to tell Hannah the truth but every time I opened my mouth no words would come out. Thankfully she couldn't see me stress out because she was closing her eyes.
"Hannah, I have to talk to you," I said with a random burst of courage.
Hannah's eyes snapped open, curiosity sparking in them. "Sure, what's up?" She asked.
I took a deep breath and pushed myself up out of the water so I was sitting on a step. "A few days ago I was just walking in the hall and I bumped into Anton—"
Hannah interrupted. "Did he kiss you? If he kissed you I'm going to—"
"What? No," I exclaimed. "He didn't kiss me Hannah. Where did that even come from? It doesn't matter anyways." I shook away the disturbing images of Anton kissing me and decided to not bother with the fact that it was the first thing that came to Hannah's mind.
Hannah's face heated up and turned a bright shade of pink. "Oh," she said softly, "continue with your story. What happened?"
"Okay I was just coming out of my bedroom in the morning and I bumped into him. It wasn't a big deal, but he freaked out on me. He pinned be against the wall and he-he threatened me with—" I trailed off. I could feel hot unshed tears sting my eyes. One slipped down my cheek and Hannah quickly noticed, wiping it away with her hand.
"What did he say Rebecca? What happened?" She asked in a demanding but comforting tone.
I blinked a few times to gain my composure and then looked back up at my sisters silver eyes. "You know how we thought Matthew left on his own without saying goodbye?" Hannah nodded in response.
"Well the truth is he didn't. He was taken by Anton. In the hallways he threatened me not to tell anyone or he'd hurt Matthew. He showed me a picture of Matthew tied up and gagged. I didn't believe it at first but then I remembered those messages that were from a strange number. They must have been from Matthew or Anton."
Hannah wasn't crying or angry. She just looked shocked more than anything. "But-but why would Anton do that? Why would he want kidnap Matthew?"
"Well right after Ty's chip was fixed, Anton and I were in the room with him alone. He said that he didn't want to do any of this but he was being forced to by his boss. Apparently he was being threatened."
Hannah smiled a little hearing Anton wasn't pure evil. "So why does his boss want Matthew?" She asked.
"His boss kidnapped Matthew because they want Ty and I. We are valuable to his boss for some reason," I said.
Hannah's eyes widened as she pulled herself up out of the hot water and wrapped a soft white towel around her shoulders. I did the same but my towel was gray.
"Maybe Anton's boss needs you and Ty to get government secrets for them or something," Hannah suggested. "But that doesn't matter right now. We have to find Matthew."
I nodded. "Yes, but how?"
Hannah was silent for a minute until here eyes lit up. "Why not tell Bert and Whitney? I'm sure they could help and maybe they would know who Anton is working for."
I shook my head in response. "But Anton would know we told them and punish Matthew," I said.
Hannah sighed and ran a hand through her wet blond hair as we left the pool room. "True, but Rebecca, you have already told Ty and I, and we need to find him either way. He is probably already getting hurt no matter what you do."
I realized Hannah was right. I'd already told Ty and Hannah and it probably wouldn't matter who else I told. I sucked in a deep breath in attempt to calm my heart. "Okay," I said.
Hannah gave me a small smile and wrapped her fingers around mine. We started down the hallway and came to a stop in front of our rooms. "After dinner tonight you, Ty, and I will tell Bert and Whitney. Okay?" Hannah said.
I raked my teeth over my bottom lip at the same time as I blew a huff of air out. After a moment, I nodded. "Okay."
Hannah gave me a soft, sympathetic smile. Under normal circumstances, Hannah's smile would cheer me up without even trying. But now, I knew that smile was completely fake. She was just putting up walls and faking it, pretending everything was okay for the sake of everyone else.
I waved to her and turned to my door. I slipped inside once the magnetic lock had granted me access. The room was just like I had left it. All my clothes were stored neatly in my closet, and all my belongings were in their place. The only thing unclean was my bed, which I hadn't made this morning.
I trudged over to the head of my bed and straightened out the pale pink sheets and comforter. After fluffing up the pillows and placing them against the headboard I made my way to the bathroom.
I took a cold shower to cool off and changed into a pair of faded gray skinny jeans. I slipped into a tight white t-shirt and pulled a turquoise and black plaid shirt with sleeves that came to my elbows. I added a pair of turquoise Vans, and a turquoise scarf just in case it got chilly.
I let my hair dry naturally, it's dark waves falling down to frame my face. I then slid on a coat of mascara, and a baby pink shade of lip gloss. It was funny thinking about my relationship with Ty. I'd barely met him a few weeks ago. We hadn't been on one proper date, yet I still felt so safe and close with him.
Maybe it was because we'd been through so much in so little time. We weren't a normal couple, but our lives weren't normal. What had brought us together was an insane experiment that all started seventeen years ago and messed up all of our lives.
Three knocks on my door caught my attention. I shook my head, hoping it would get rid of the dazed feeling that came with my deep thoughts. My hand wrapped around the cold knob and I swung the door open.
Hannah stood in front of me wearing a pair of leggings and a red v-neck long sleeve shirt. "Are you ready for this?" She asked.
I nodded. "I'm as ready as I'll ever be."
A door opened and shut. "Ready for what?" Anton asked, slipping an arm, around Hannah's waist.
