Chapter 28

After the incident in the theater, the relationship between the three of them changed.

Adrien would continuously ask Marinette about her day and how she was feeling. He would listen to everything she told him and he didn't tell anyone, but he kept a small notebook where he wrote small facts about her he was afraid he'd forget.

Marinette would often make jokes (not puns, mind you, but good, quality jokes) to make Adrien laugh. He really appreciated her sense of humor. She would also worry a lot about his home situation or his homework or his fencing lessons or just his busy schedule in general.

Danny and Adrien would have a punwar almost every day now that Danny knew how deep into the pun fandom Adrien had sunk. Danny would also be more protective over the boy. Now that he belonged to the closer group of friends to Danny. Especially since he was a superhero. Now Danny had superhero friends who kept skipping class to fight dangerous battles.

He had never appreciated Sam and Tucker more.

Danny's relationship with Tikki was rather odd. He could certainly see how she fit with Marinette. They were both a bit bossy and had a big sense of justice, although Marinette did cause trouble here and there. She and Danny would go pranking sometimes. Tikki was a bit of a mother hen, which annoyed Danny sometimes. Along with her lack of humor. But she was very kind and wise.

Danny and Plagg, though, had a bit of a weird bond. That Kwami acted as if he didn't care, but he usually did. He gave good advice that Danny could appreciate. Marinette couldn't understand why he thought the advice was helpful, but Danny knew. Plagg made things simpler. Teens had the habit of making a big deal of things that weren't and Plagg would help ground them in his own way.

Danny had decided to go visit Adrien more often and stay in his room to talk. He quite preferred Plagg's stories to Tikki's. Never tell her he said that. She could get scary.

Plagg had told Adrien and Danny about the other superheroes. About the other Kwamis. Especially about Nooroo since Danny found himself asking about him a lot.

"He's a goody-two-shoes," Plagg would say with the slightest bit of fondness in his voice. "But he appreciated jokes. He gave a lot of second chances and always saw good in others." He sighed now. Decades of remorse and longing echoing in that breath of air. "He can't stand up for himself at all. That's probably how he ended up where he is. That stupid, can't-see-what's-right-in-front-of-him idiot."

Adrien put his chin on his hand with a worried expression. "Has it happened before? That the Miraculous ended up in the wrong hands?"

For the first time, Danny was able to see a deep expression on the creature's face. The raw feeling of grief already gave him the answer before the Kwami said it.

"Yes."

Danny pursed his lips. In anger or sadness, he didn't know. Adrien scowled. "I knew it," he mumbled. He saw it too. He knew how Plagg could get clingy sometimes. How he liked to perch on his body or hair or snuggle close to him when he thought he was asleep. He had a bit of a fear of abandonment that he did not like to show. Adrien was an observant person, though. He could see pain in others. And he tried his best to alleviate it.

Plagg continued with a neutral face. "Humans are sensitive and can easily deviate from their morals. It hasn't happened that often. Usually, the keeper is very cautious with who gets the Miraculous. Something big must have happened for the miraculous to jump hands."

Adrien frowned. "What? What do you mean?"

Plagg brought his paws up in his own version of a shrug. "The Butterfly miraculous used to belong to someone else. A woman." He looked at Adrien. "Your mom."

"What?!"

"I'm pretty sure it was your mom. Our current keeper had given her the butterfly miraculous when she was a teen. At least, that's what he told Tikki."

Adrien was shocked and confused. "But how did I never know about it?"

"She stopped a long time ago." Plagg knew this was a bit more of a sensitive topic and spoke in a soft tone. "Probably because she had met your father. We don't know, but she disappeared along with her miraculous."

Danny scrunched his eyebrows together. "Can't mister Fu find that miraculous? It's a pretty important thing and now that," he glanced at Adrien, "you know..she gave up the ghost...it could be anywhere."

Plagg huffed. "You think he hasn't searched? He's already been searching for the peacock miraculous for a long time, but it just disappeared, just like the other one. The previous holder probably kept it. Holders do that sometimes when they get too attached and don't want to hand back the miraculous. They would then be passed down for generations as if it was some kind of dusty relic, which make it incredibly difficult to find."

Danny wasn't very surprised at the venom and anger in the Kwami's tone. These were his friends they were talking about after all. He nodded a bit solemnly. After a bit of silence Danny looked at Plagg, who was now looking around the room as if this conversation was boring. "Don't worry, Plagg." He smiled. "I can't promise anything about the peacock miraculous, but I will get Nooroo back."

Plagg looked at him. "That's a nice sentiment, kiddo, but it's not that easy."

"Oh, I know." Danny smirked and the other two couldn't help but feel a bit of hope. "Just trust me."

They continued talking and soon left the heavy topic, choosing instead to argue about how blue cheese was better than Camembert and that no, it's not gross that it has mold.

Eventually, Danny stood up to leave and Adrien, ever the gentleman, accompanied him to the door. They continued talking as they descended the stairs. Then they were rudely interrupted by a cough.

The two boys looked up and froze. Adrien tensed and looked between the two of them. He wasn't sure who he should be more afraid for.

Danny cocked his head, making the butterflies around him take off for a split second before they landed again. He inspected the man before him.

He knew immediately who this was, although there was little resemblance between him and Adrien. This was the father.

"So this is the famous Garçon Papillon." The man spoke with a hint of curiousness and almost a bit unsure.

"And you are Gabriel Agreste," Danny responded with none of the tone the man had addressed him with. Instead, his voice was laced with anger and fake politeness with a tad of bitterness.

"That I am. May I ask what you are doing in my house?"

"Why yes. I was spending some time with your son."

Adrien watched in shocked silence as the two passive aggressively conversed, neither of them moving an inch.

Gabriel's jaw clenched and Adrien took it as his cue to interrupt.

"Oh hello, father! This is my friend Danny. Danny this is father. I was just about to accompany Danny out the door. Please excuse us," he grinned as he pushed Danny towards the entrance.

Danny did not want to leave. Leaving would mean he gave the man the upper hand. It might be petty but leaving with those words would mean he accepted that he wasn't allowed in the house anymore so Danny did not want to leave.

There was also something about that man. A remnant of some kind of aura that pulled him towards him. Oh, Danny really wanted to be closer. He would like to pull that face closer to his fist.

Adrien smiled at him. "Hey, same time next week? I got some new videogames I want to show you."

Danny grinned, purposely not looking at Gabriel. "Sure, Adrien. It'll be fun." He waved before the door closed, taking his butterflies with him.

Boom surprise chapter.
Here's a bit on Danny's relationship with people and plagg being a soft boi. Yes he's had bad times with a previous holder. I read somewhere that this was hinted at in the show. And all the times plagg said 'probably' means 'definitely' because they can't be sure but they are right.

What did you think of my theories??
