Chapter 12: Familiar Creature 8-1-16

Meanwhile inside of Orthanc, Frodo was talking to Saruman.

"This wasn't part of the deal," Frodo said as he squirmed around in the arms of an orc.

"Oh, but it was. See you have had a misunderstanding Halfling. I recall you saying, 'let my friends go'. You said nothing about yourself," Sarumon explained, "Plus, only the ring bearers are safe to hold this burden. That's you right?"

Saruman walked over to Frodo and placed the Ring back over his neck again. Frodo could feel all the power of the Ring wash over him as the necklace was back into place. It was a sickeningly strange feeling to have it back again. He stopped struggling and started hazily at the floor.

"You can feel it can't you?" the wizard asked smiling.

"Let me go," Frodo said his voice quaky, "Please. Send me away,"

Saruman ignored that and said,

"Tomorrow morning you will go with a small group or orcs to the Brown Lands. Your friends will think you are still in Orthanc from the lack of orcs that left and no doubt come inside and try to get you back. Little do they know that I will still be here and you will be gone. I will capture them all and meet you and the other orcs in the Brown Lands. Then we will all go to Sauron," Saruman walked back to his throne and sat down, "There is no stopping now. The Ring will take you and you will have no choice but to betray your friends and join me,"

"No!" Frodo shouted, "That will never happen!"

Saruman shook his head in disagreement and said,

"Take him to a cell. He will stay there until tomorrow morning,"

The orc nodded and started moving Frodo forward. Frodo thought hard and quick and then acted. He kicked the orcs legs with all his might like he had seen Merry do long ago when he had helped him escape. The orc stiffened his grip and tightened it. One arm was around Frodo's stomach lifting him off the ground and the other was firmly gripping his hair tight.

They descended some stairs and then more stairs. Soon Frodo had realized they had made it to the cells. There were about 10 cells on either side of the hallway, but there was also a corner just up ahead that probably held more cells. It was dark and very humid down there. On the walls there were only three torches giving off a faint glow.

The orc suddenly turned Frodo to the left into a cell. Frodo acted quickly and before the orc could put him into the cell, he twisted and kicked and thrashed with all his might. He probably looked like a wild animal trying to escape the hands of a hunter. The orc was growling and trying to get a grip on Frodo, but he was too quick and small. He twisted one more time and was free.

He fell to the ground, crawled away from the orcs reach, and then stood up and started running down the corridor. Frodo could hear the footsteps and shouting of the orc behind him, but he kept running and never looked back. The only problem with his plan was that he was going the opposite way of the exit.

Frodo was about to turn a corner when something grabbed his arm from inside of a nearby cell. He screamed and tried getting free, but whatever had grabbed him had him tight and wasn't letting go. Frodo thought it was going to eat his arm.

"Give it to us! It's ours it is!" the creature inside of the cell cried with its strangely crackly voice.

Frodo knew at that moment who it was by the instant he hear the voice. Gandalf had wanted Frodo to stay away from this creature, but here he was being grabbed by it instead. Just as the creature made its way to Frodo's throat, the orc that had been chasing Frodo grabbed him from behind. It was like a fierce tug of war match between the two. Frodo secretly hoped the orc would win soon.

Moments later the orc pulled Frodo back with so much force that he went flying into the cell across from the creature's cell. Frodo's head slammed on the cells wall hard and he felt dizzy and sick all over. Before he could get up, the orc slammed the door and locked it, then walked away furious.

Frodo was panting from the fight and sat in one of the corners of the cell catching his breath. He gripped the back of his head in his hands checking for any blood, but there was none thankfully. On the opposite side of the cell, he could hear the creature whispering to itself.

"We have founds it, yes we have precious. Now how to gets it? We break free and takes it for us! Yes, my love,"

It kept mumbling on and on until Frodo couldn't handle it anymore.

"Quiet," he said annoyed.

He glanced over at the creature's cell but could only see two glowing eyes and fingers gripping the bars of its cell. It stuck out its tongue and spat out some of its saliva in response loudly. Frodo laid against the wall and tried to go to sleep, but every time he was about to drift off into sleep he heard either, "my love," or "precious," or some other strange words he didn't know the meaning of.

Frodo decided to go to the other side of the cell so he wouldn't have to look at the two glowing eyes staring at him. As he crawled to the other side of the cell, he felt something small and hard under his left hand. He stopped and dug around in the area. Finally, Frodo fished out something small out of the dirt on the ground.

He brought it to the cell door so he could see what it was by the light of the few torches. Twisting it in the dim light it looked like a golden shaped key with a maroon gem in the middle. His first thought was that it was the key to the cell. Hands shaking, he carefully tried placing it into the lock, but it wouldn't fit. It was clear it wasn't the key to his cell.

Frodo got distracted as the creature across the way started talking again,

"What is it? What has it got?" it asked.

Frodo placed his find safely away in his shirt pocket and said,

"Nothing. Nothing important,"

The creature growled and said,

"It's lying. Of course it is precious,"

Frodo turned away from the cell door again and went into a dark corner and rested his head on the wall. He was starting to get a headache and knew he must get some rest if there was ever a chance in escaping again. Closing his eyes, he drifted off into sleep.
