I'm reading a fanfiction where Ryuk got turned into a human and he can't turn back to a shinigami, and he missed his wings because, well, they were a part of him, so he got black wings tattooed onto his back... but then him and Light were involved in an explosion and Ryuk shielded Light from the blast, but his back was so burnt up there was no tattoo left, and when him and Light woke up in the hospital, he just sighed and said "I guess I was never meant to have wings..."
