Chapter 4
Chapter 4 – The Trap
Next day, Adela was woken up by her new lawyer.
"I am your new lawyer," said the woman entering her room. She had short, straight black hair and rim-less rectangular glasses. She wore a suit of deep shade of emerald with high heels. "Anastasia Rodrigo. You can call me Ann."
"Leave me alone," Adela said, annoyed that even her sleep schedule was to be monitored.
"I will, but I must inform you of something," Ann said. "And I am pretty sure you would want to hear it."
"Go ahead," Adela moaned.
"Today, at approximately three pm, your sister will be returning from abroad. I was wondering if you would like to pick her up. However, you do not seem very interested-"
Adela sat up, wide-eyed.
"Eurus!" she chanted.
"Get ready by two pm sharp," Ann smiled.
The whether seemed fairly less chill. Adela waited in the Montego family's personal runway and soon spotted an airplane in the distance. It landed right beside her and the private jet came to a halt. The door opened and a girl in her early teens came out. She was not like Adela. She had jet-black hair, a ghostly white complexion and Margaret's icy-blue eyes. She stepped down gently and stretched. She looked at Adela and grinned. She trapped Adela into a bear-hug and wouldn't let go.
"Alright – I – Can't – Breathe-," Adela panted.
Eurus stepped back and smiled from ear to ear.
"We got party to do," Eurus said.
She took her hand and ran to the house.
Eurus's wing was beside Adela's. Eurus's happiness did not last very long as she looked at the portraits of their father on the walls. Eurus had not gotten the chance to meet Edward like the way Adela had after graduation. She stopped in front of a portrait which had hers, Adela's and her father's picture painted on it. Edward had Jet-black hair like Eurus's and light brown eyes like Adela. Eurus resembles Edward more than Adela. Her features were finer and more detailed.
Adela pated her on the shoulder as a tear streamed down Eurus's cheeks. They entered Eurus's wing. Hers was brightly lit with a soft tone throughout the wing. All the furniture was a light shade of grey and off-white.
"I got it cleaned for you today," Adela said, pleased with herself.
"I didn't ask for it," Eurus said, throwing herself on her bed.
"Thankless," Adela scoffed.
"Anyway, how's Thea. Why's she not here?" Eurus asked, looking around.
"Don't mention that asshole in front of me," Adela said, gritting her teeth.
"Huh, what did she do?" Eurus asked, sitting up.
Adela narrated the entire event to her from the beginning to the end.
"That's...That's a joke, right?" Eurus said, shocked.
"That was a wonderful story," Thea said, emerging into the room. "And it wasn't a joke, Eurus."
"You are such an asshole-" Eurus shrieked, slapping Thea.
Just then, Edmund, the second youngest Montego child came in.
"What is going on here?" he inquired, frowning.
"Who gave you the permission to enter?" Adela countered.
"I happened to pass by. With Magnus."
Magnus appeared and gave Adela a cold stare. He looked at Eurus then at Thea and back.
"Made quite an entrance, didn't you," he said, staring at Eurus with the same icy-blue eyes.
Magnus was the tallest and had rough brown hair which could not decide where to part. Andrew was just an inch or so shorter than Magnus and had exact features like Adela. Edmund, on the other hand had every feature the same as Edward. All the brothers were above six feet.
"We overheard everything," added Edmund. "How much of it was true?"
Thea seized the moment. She made an innocent face which disgusted Adela and every instinct in her body told her Thea required at least another slap. She started wiping crocodile tears which made Adela imagine her slapping Thea again.
"Did you literally just slap her?" Magnus demanded.
"Always deserved one, in my opinion," Edmund replied, but fell silent as Magnus gave him 'his' look.
"You both better apologize," Magnus hissed.
"Oh, shut it Magnus. You don't get to order me around."
"I'm am still your elder," Magnus shrilled.
Adela waited a second and then screamed.
Sebastian burst into the room and pulled out his hand gun.
"What is all this?" he interrogated.
"Please show everyone their way out, Seb. Someone needs to understand who controls who," Adela said, narrowing her eyes at Magnus.
Sebastian moved to make way and everyone slowly filed out. Once everyone was out, Adela and Eurus burst out laughing.
"That – was – amazing –," Eurus panted.
"She deserved another one of those slaps," Adela grinned.
"Oh yes she did," Eurus commented.
"Up for horse riding?" Adela asked.
"Nah, I'm too tired."
"Alright, rest well then."
"Wait," Eurus said. "What about Thea?"
"What about her?" Adela said, raising her eyebrow.
"We need to be careful," Eurus whispered.
Adela nodded. "I know."
Later the next day, Adela waited for Eurus to come for lunch but she texted her that she was busy. Adela ate alone in silence and then went to her room to check on her several hundred businesses.
"We need to sign a contract with-," Ann started.
"Alright," said Adela, signing without reading the check. "Also, check where Eurus is for me," she added.
"She had gone to play golf but has not returned since morning," Ann replied, chewing her gum while looking at her I-pad.
"Check where she is for me," Adela repeated, signing yet another contract.
"Yes," Ann responded.
She collected the documents from Adela and left the room to Adela being alone at war with her thoughts again.
Her phone vibrated and she looked at the screen. It was Eurus's message. Adela hurriedly opened the text and her face showed dread. There was a picture of Eurus and her 3 brothers tied up, surrounded by men wearing black from head to toe, so Adela could not figure anyone out. A gun was being pointed at each of them. Adela's hands shook with anger. No. It was fear. Adela had never felt fear prior to this moment. With trembling fingers, she clicked the audio button. It was Thea.
'I know you wouldn't want them dead, bestie. Their survival hinges on your delivery of two billion dollars to the location attached below. Remember what I told you as a kid? In this life, Adela, we are all Kings or Pawns to one another.'
Adela pressed the bell for emergency. Instantly, Sebastian, along with five men and Ann came in. A chill shudder ran down her spine. She handed the mobile to Seb and he went through the message.
"You," Adela said, pointing to Ann, "Bring me two billion dollars."
"We can't act hastily, Adela," Ann whispered.
"We can talk about it," Sebastian insisted.
"GET ME THE MONEY," Adela shouted.
Ann left the room without a word while Sebastian stayed and was looking closely at the picture. There was another message. Sebastian looked at Adela and then played the audio.
"You don't have forever, Ada. Thirty minutes."
Ann came back with a bunch of credit cards in bundles.
"As you requested," Ann said, shoving them all in a leather bag.
Adela stared at the cards. The generations of hard work were stored in them.
"I'm sorry, dad," Adela whispered, tears flooding her eyes.
"Miss Montego, let's go," Sebastian said.
He clicked another voice note and this time, it was Margaret.
"Twenty minutes."
Adela leaned on the table. Margaret. How could she kill her own children? She is a lunatic.
"Miss?" Sebastian said, worriedly.
"Let's go," Adela responded.
She managed to get into the SUV. Another messaged popped up on her screen from Eurus's number. Adela groaned in despair.
"Ten minutes," Margaret's high-pitched voice called out. Adela could hear Thea laughing in the back ground.
"Faster," Adela said.
"I am trying my best, Miss," Sebastian replied.
They took shortcuts and Sebastian closed every road for VIP pass and they travelled faster than ever.
Adela was breathing heavily. She felt emotions. Fear. She imagined what her father would have said. A beep notified her of another message.
"Five minutes, Ada. Where are you?" Thea said mockingly.
The car stopped. Adela pushed the door open and looked around. It was a building somewhere far beyond the country. Sebastian came out of the car and held a hand in front of her.
"Move," Adela said. "I don't have time for non-sense."
"Remember, your safety is the top priority, Miss Montego."
Adela moved sideways and ran in the direction of the building entrance. Two guards stood outside and blocked Sebastian from entering.
"No, Miss. This is too dangerous," Sebastian said, shaking his head.
"No worries. You go back to the car." He opened his mouth to argue but Adela countered him, "It is an order."
Sebastian stood there for a minute and moved sideways.
"I'll be waiting outside," he said.
Adela nodded. She had to do this. It was her gambit.
"Finally, here," Thea's voice echoed in the speakers. "Let us begin!"
The door behind Adela slammed shut. She pounded on it but all in vain.
"What do you want?" Adela yelled.
"Where is the money?" Thea's voice echoed.
"Outside. With my lawyer."
"Ah. I'll give you an update. Your lawyer is being kept at gunpoint. The giant is arrested."
"Sebastian," Adela hissed.
"Well, well. Now let us begin this wonderful game. Now, you see a hand gun on the table ahead? Pick that up. I must warn you. There are only two bullets inside. Use them wisely."
"Thea, keep your promise. What is this bloody game. You promised to let them go."
"Well, I changed my mind," she said. Adela could imagine her scoffing in her mind.
"Now, pick up the bloody gun."
