Interview with Brenda

What and who inspired you into reading and/or writing?

My mother always encouraged reading at a young age, and reading other books was what helped to inspire me to write my own stories.

What was the first book that you read that started your love for reading?

God, it was so long ago that I can hardly remember. I know that when I was very young, one of my favorite books was The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. I loved anything by Dr. Seuss, and so I guess it was his books that inspired my love for reading.

What was the turning point in your life that you decided to take your writing seriously?

Okay, this is going to sound really stupid, but it was when they took The Phantom of the Opera off of Netflix on January 1, 2019. I was so heartbroken about it because I didn't own the DVD at the time (I do now), so I was being completely cut off from watching it until I could find it and buy it. So, the day it was taken off of Netflix, I decided to write my fanfiction Together at Last (now called Our Love is Evergreen). I had written before but had never actually finished any of my works, so when I finished writing it five weeks later, it was a big accomplishment for me. That was when I joined Wattpad and I just kept on writing.

What is the inspiration for your stories?

It really depends on the book that I'm writing. What generally helps me with finding inspiration is by listening to music that relates to the plot of my book and writing and/or role-playing with my best friend.

Do you outline your stories or write whatever comes to mind?

I'm a go with the flow type of writer, so what I'll do is just kind of come up with a general idea of what I want for the plot and then I just go at it.

What is your method of beginning to writing a book?

Like I said in my previous answer, what I like to do is just come up with a general idea of what I want to do for the plot and then I just start writing. Sometimes I don't even really have a clue and I just start writing. Like for my book Keys & Laces, I had the idea for a long time about a love story between a pianist and ballerina and I had a few details in mind, but I didn't really have a solid plot. So one day, I just sat on my couch and started writing just to see what I came up with and I ended up liking it.

Do you ever get attached to the characters in your story? If so, what part of their personality or quirks do you find relatable?

Oh my gosh, yes. I get SO attached to my characters. Like I will start crying if they're crying in the book or will get really happy if something good is happening to them. I put a little bit (and sometimes a lot) of myself into my characters, so usually there's a lot about them that's relatable for me.

Do you base your characters on people in your personal life, imagination, or both?

I've done both. Either way, it's really fun. Sometimes I'll even base a character off of something I came up with but then add little elements from my friends.

What is the best part of writing a story?

For me, the best part of writing a story is publishing it and getting feedback from my readers. It's always so positive and really makes me happy. I've struggled with self-esteem issues and so reading positive feedback on my books really help me to feel better about myself as a person and a writer.

How do you deal with writer's block?

The best way to deal with writer's block for me is to role play with my friend @hungergames36. She helped me a lot when I was writing Hey There, Delilah because role-playing with her really helped to get the creativity flowing.

Would you want to see your story or stories be adapted? If so, who would you want to play your characters?

I would love to see my stories adapted! As for who I would like to see play my characters, it really depends on the character. In the end, I just want someone who would portray the character accurately and convincingly.

What kind of advice would you give to an aspiring writer?

Just go for it. Even though it's hard (believe me, I know it is), don't let rude comments get you down. Remember that you're writing for yourself and not for others, and their opinions don't matter. All that matters is that YOU are proud of what you've created. If others like it, that's fantastic. If they don't and they hate on you, that's their own problem.

Are you working on a new story?

I am, yes. I'm working on the sequel to my collab with @humgergames36, and I'm also currently writing an Edward Scissorhands fanfiction. The latter of the two already has the first couple of chapters posted.
