Interview 43

Where are you from?

I'm from the teeny-tiny country of Croatia.

How old are you?

Sweet nineteen.

What and who inspired you into reading and/or writing?

Well, my parents definitely inspired me onto reading because both of them are huge bookworms. I learned to read when I was five and haven't stopped since. I'm not sure when or why I started writing, but I remember my first story was about the mouse prince brothers.

What was the first book that you read that started your love for reading?

The two books I have the most vivid memory of reading when I was a child were 'Death in the Clouds' by Agatha Christie and 'It' by Stephen King. 'It' was too mature for a child, but made me a cool edgy kid in my days. I had the best scary stories.

What was the turning point in your life that you decided to take your writing seriously?

When I realized I would be the happiest doing so.

What is the inspiration for your stories?

Everything. Dreams, shower thoughts, conversations... I firmly believe that anything can serve as a basis for the story if you mix it with passion and effort.

Do you outline your stories or write whatever comes to mind?

A little bit of both. I always have a vague outline in my head. Beginning and the end, mostly. However, it tends to change drastically once I start writing, especially when it comes to characters.

What is your method of beginning to writing a book?

Before you start, you must be in love with the idea. You have to be obsessed with it, otherwise, you will get bored. When it comes to actually start, I always make my prologue a cute poem that encapsulates the main idea of the story. As for the first chapters, I like them 'in medias res', it's more dynamic that way.

Do you ever get attached to the characters in your story? If so, what part of their personality or quirks do you find relatable?

My characters usually sprout from my desires and problems, so I can relate to most of them. That being said, I can relate the strongest to clumsy, overly dramatic, and awkward characters, so Somboon is my current favorite.

Do you base your characters on people in your personal life, imagination, or both?

Both. I'm blessed with very interesting and unique people in my life, so I steal little bits of their personality, but only to season the already existing characters.

What is the best part of writing a story?

Seeing your fantasy come to life and turn into something you can share with others. It might be different from what you've originally imagined, but it's worth it.

How do you deal with writer's block?

I put my mind away from it and the inspiration finds me. That is the rare occasions in life where running away from the problem is the solution.

Would you want to see your story or stories be adapted? If so, who would you want to play your characters?

Who wouldn't? I actually won a contest once and my short story was adapted as an audiobook. Audiostory? Incredible feeling. I would be thrilled (and shocked) about any kind of adaptation, but I think I would be the most excited for the animated one. I love cartoons, they are magical. As for the actors for the live-action, I would want some no-name, young and aspiring actors.

What kind of advice would you give to an aspiring writer?

Well, I am an aspiring writer myself, but I think the two most important things are persistence and experimentation. Persistence means not falling behind, experimentation means moving forward.

Are you working on a new story?

Always. I'm putting all my energy into my ongoing book, 'Serendipity's Satellite', but I have the next fifty or so ideas ready in line.
