Chapter Twenty-Eight

"What do you mean?" asked Pebblepounce, putting his board down on the nearest chair with a fond glance. "And why are the blue lights on?"

"There's a foreign spaceship approaching, and it's too close for us to run away from it," said Lionshine plainly. "And we don't know what will happen, so we might die, or we might not."

"Okay," said Pebblepounce calmly. "Does that mean that we won't be able to play Monopoly?"

"Yes," said all the other cats in unison. Lionshine turned towards the large window in front of her and looked at the station. It was racing to them at looked like full speed. All of a sudden, the space station stopped, almost running into the crew's ship.

"Expert driving skills right there," said Shadepelt, grudgingly but nevertheless impressed. "I wish I could drive that well. The last time I tried, I ran a ship into the side of a Bob Evan's. On the bright side, they were kind enough to give me some free pancakes."

"That's nice," said Greenface, only half listening. "Did it help you pass your exam?"

"Greenface, I am going to—"

"Guys, this is not the time to argue about stupid stuff," interrupted Lionshine. "You do realize that there is a giant station two feet away from our own, filled with unknown creatures of potential killing powers and we are in here talking about Bob Evan's pancakes?" Just as the she-cat said that, loud sounds of what sounded like metal being cut pierced the air. All of the cats cringed and tried in vain to block their ears. As soon as it started, it stopped, and they straightened up in wonder.

Sure enough, a giant hole had been cut through the ship, and quickly replaced with a giant pink jelly. Four weird-looking cats walked through it with little effort.

"Who in the name of StarClan are they?" asked Shadepelt, astonished.

The cats stared at them for a while and then finally spoke in some weird, foreign language. "Ave, hospites, Venimus Jovem, volumus scire quid quaeritis. Non enim metuendum - sed ne ut oculos nostros dirigamus conspiciunt. Alio modo potest accipi vobiscum, nolite solliciti esse quod nos lingua loqui. Sed nosnon possis. Laetian loquimur. Latin te potest intelligere, quod ita erit suffecient."

"Really?"

"Sane nos possumus loqui lingua, sed non possumus non intellexi."

"What are they saying?" asked Shadepelt eagerly. Her ears were pricked and she glanced back and forth at the cats and Pebblepounce.

"These are quite interesting cats," Pebblepounce began cautiously. "They can understand us, and speak Laetian, which is a variant of Latin. Their words are jumbled but I can understand them." His eyes, wide and careful, directed the others to be vigilant in their speech.

"They want to know why we're here," he added. "They welcome us, but they ask that we don't stare....at their....eyes."

He trailed off, and one of the aliens started talking once more. "Et adducam te ducem. Quaeso tacebitis. Mediis tua pinus et servari tutissimo relinquemus. Ut non solliciti."

Pebblepounce nodded. "They said that they will bring us to their leader and our ship will remain here."

The alien interrupted him. "We live in circuitu axibus Iovis. Erit breve iter; ducem tantum vult ad te pluribus quaestionibus. Please imitandum nos."

Shadepelt looked at Pebblepounce. "What did they say?"

"They live on the hubs surrounding Jupiter. Follow them." He rose and padded after one of the cats, tail flicking nervously. He was suddenly stopped by the lead alien. "Manere!" the cat shouted.

"He says to wait . . ." Pebblepounce muttered. Lionshine's gaze darkened. "What's happening out there?" she questioned.

"Tempestate perculsi. Alieni, te fugiunt. Hic est admodum periculosa. Vade!" The aliens swarmed through the pink jelly-like substance, which disappeared behind them and became the metal of the ship once more. Pebblepounce scurried over to the control panel. "Lionshine, set a route away from here as fast as possible!'

She hesitantly walked over. "What's happening?" she repeated. "A storm has struck!" he yelped. "We have to get out of here!"

Lionshine gulped and began setting a course, paws flying over the panel. Clicking one final button, they started to move away. The rest of the cats gazed out of the window with apprehension. "I hope they're safe," Greenface murmured. Then he excused himself to go throw up.
