The Greene household that practically ran the Outer Banks lived by this. They were evil people with evil intentions. Once you were power hungry and your pockets were filled to the brim, there was no going back. No amount of convincing nor empathetic challenges could reverse the mindset of a high status kook family here.

The damage their cruel personalities and their corrupt insurance company had caused was enough to put a crack in the whole land. But the practical fear the mysterious family had put over everyone caused the entire community to practically praise them time and time again. Damage.

More specifically, Marielyn Greene was damaged. She hated her life. So much, she did anything and everything to get out of the house. Her bitchy friends weren't the best, but anything was better than being in that estate where she never belonged.

Marielyn craved for freedom. For kindness and a loving life. She was stuck like a puppet under the hands of her parents. Marielyn's life was all planned out. She was going to continue school at kildare academy, eventually go to an ivy league school and become a lawyer, somehow help take over her family's business, and marry her high school sweetheart. Who came up with all of this? Her parents of course. The manipulators decided everything and vicariously lived through their second eldest daughter.

What could she do? Ruin her reputation in this judgemental town as a kook? Run away with nothing but her allowance and zero ounce of courage? Betray everything she knew?

That was exactly what JJ Maybank planned to help her do the second he laid eyes on her at that huge house party. Two confused souls, one lost in life and one in grievance for a new one.

Marielyn wasn't a fan of parties. But when Sarah Cameron dragged her to her boyfriend, Topper's, it was hard to say no. Her boyfriend, shitty as ever, would be mad. He'd be furious once he found out.

Marielyn planned to walk in, say hi, then leave soon after. But the tempting blonde who had adored Marielyn for years now continued to tempt her. After that party, her boyfriend had a lot more to be furious about than just her showing up.

Being a Greene meant fending for yourself. It meant harming others for the benefit of your own. You wore the bright blue colors with smug pride. Nothing shall get in your way.

Sing for the damage we've done. Oh, did she sing. She sang for miles. She sang for the tides to wash her over or even a boy to blend in as a savior. She sang for the innocent but tarnished blood that coursed through her veins. A blood she didn't claim as her own. Marielyn Greene did not belong here.

She was a sweet girl. So sweet, nobody seemed to want a taste. Not here, not in this mean place full of broken plates and hearts and minds. She was a lamb in a pit full of hungry wolves. Her own family barely glanced her way only due to the mere difference she acquired by being... humble.

The pogues who always saw who she truly was would become her family. JJ Maybank would save her.
