CHAPTER FIVE
Snow must be the most annoying thing on the planet. It keeps scrunching under your shoe, it's cold, it's wet, it's ugly, people get all lovey-dovey because of it and it's extremely inconvenient.
Jason groaned as he continued digging into his pockets, trying to find his car keys. He had been standing there, next to his black Range Rover, for quite a while now. He is eager to just go home and leave this horrible week behind. He loves weekends, finally seeing his mom again, his dad, no Alexia, Maria...
Which reminded him, he still hadn't spoken to her after their last lash out. Knowing Maria meant he knew she would want him to apologize properly, but he just couldn't do that. It wasn't in his nature and although it was Maria, it still felt weird to him. However, he didn't have much of a choice, did he? Besides, after they make up she might help him finding his car keys.
So, with that decision made, he left the parking lot and followed the path to the cafeteria. There were barely students around on campus, most of them left during the weekends to just go home and see their parents or just to leave. He didn't blame them of course. If that fight didn't happen, he'd be home already. He hated hanging around campus.
Stepping into the cafeteria, he got overwhelmed by the warmth again, the smell of coffee and bagels and the cozy look of the brown furniture. Wasting no time, he approached the counter and leaned over, looking for someone to help him. A young male walked out of the kitchen and caught his eye, quickly approaching him.
"May I help you?"
"Yes, do you know where Maria is?"
"Maria?"
Jason nodded impatiently, "Yes."
The male looked confused but nodded anyway, "Should I go look for her for you?"
"Yeah, that's what I want." Jason gritted his teeth and dropped his gaze, trying not to burst out. He was impatient, irritated and he didn't like dumb people. If this conversation with Maria wasn't so important he would've scared the hell out of that dumb waiter already.
Maria walked out of the kitchen just seconds later, eyeing Jason in an arrogant and strict manner. He couldn't help but chuckle.
"Maria.."
"Before you say anything--I don't tolerate you being rude again. So, if that's what you're planning on doing then leave this fucking cafeteria so I can continue my work in peace, yeah?"
Maria was crazily intimidating, but she was also crazy for Jason and she loved him with whole her heart. As he loved her, of course. This was just her trying to show him who in charge is.
"But Maria, there's no one here. You have practically nothing to do you should be heading home soon. I just wanted to fix things before I left as well."
"You wanted to fix things or you need help?" She had her jaw clenched and her big brown eyes fixated on Jason. Jason scratched his neck awkwardly, "Both...?"
It was silent for a while but then she exhaled deeply. "I forgive you, querido. I know you can't apologize, but I do want to hear it from you. The only reason I'm forgiving you is because it's adorable how you practically can't live without me. You already need my help."
Jason snickered and took a deep breath after. "I'm sorry, Maria." His words were small and barely noticeable, but she wasn't going to make him repeat it. She laughed and leaned closer to the counter, wrapping her arms around his wide frame. He hugged her back in relief and leaned his head against her shoulder shortly before he kissed both her cheeks.
"Now tell me, what is it that you need?"
"Do you know where my car keys are? I should've been home a while ago, I'm basically the only person left here and it's sickening."
Maria laughed again and kneeled down, disappearing behind the counter. Just seconds later she shoved his car keys into his hands. "You left them here last week so you wouldn't lose them. Smart choice."
"Damn, thank you."
"You're welcome, cari. Drive safe and God bless you!"
The walk back to his car was quicker and his eagerness to leave had increased. He got in, pressed his foot against the engine bar and the car roared forward. He connected his phone with the car radio and only mere moments later, he found himself singing along with whatever was blasting through the speakers.
The moment his car was leaving college behind, he noticed a girl sitting on the sidewalk. Chills ran up his spine instantly when he saw how she had been sitting on the icy snow. Her ass must be all wet from the snow.
Of course, the girl turned out to be Alexia and he stopped the car, not getting it over his heart to keep driving. Heartless or not--he could not bare with himself sitting all warm in the car while the girl he loved most was sitting cold and curled up outside. Besides, although he was still mad, he could try and get over that since they were going to see each other a lot, right? She was only telling the truth, he asked her for it.
Something panged right through his heart but he decided to ignore it and horned a couple of times, gaining her attention. She frowned and he could spot the lines forming on her face, groaning inwardly. Alexia exhaled and he saw the weft escaping her mouth as she stood up and patted all the snow off her skirt. His heart was, somehow, beating faster than it ever had and although his mind told him to just drive, he couldn't do it.
What is up with all this gay shit man?
Alexia reached his car window and he quickly rolled it down, looking at her majestic face. Her nose was red from the cold, her eyes were watering and her skin was pale enough to say she was getting too cold. Her nose was running and there were tiny snowflakes falling right on her upper lip, barely even melting. She must be freezing.
All in all, the picture of warm dressed Alexia with red cheeks and a red nose was adorable.
Stop this!
"It's getting cold, get the hell in." Jason hissed, feeling his own skin reacting to the cold. Alexia pulled up her eyebrow and looked him straight in the eye. "Excuse me?"
"Get in, Alexia."
"And why would I?" Jason groaned again and closed his eyes for a mere second. She has got to be the most stubborn, annoying woman on this planet.
"Because you'll freeze to death, hell, I'm about to freeze to death so stop this stubbornness and get the fuck in."
She scowled and walked away, opening the door to the passenger seat and climbed in. Jason sighed and ran a hand through his hair, seeing her body shiver. Turning up the heat, he looked at her shortly before he put on the music again, knowing she'll relax from that.
Although they were both silent, the energy was radiating off their bodies in a rush and although neither of them wanted to admit it, they were enjoying the ride.
"Why did you do it?" Alexia immediately snapped, looking up at Jason.
Jason acted like he didn't know what she was talking about, but he knew damn well what she meant.
"I mean--why didn't you just let me freeze? Stefano was going to pick me up, you know. He's probably there already wondering where I am." Jason didn't dictate the least bit of regret in her voice.
"It's Stefano. He has probably forgotten about this."
Alexia was going to object, but once again he was right. "But why did you pick me up then? I still don't understand."
As Jason stopped for a red sign, he turned to look at her and got distracted by her revulsive face. Her eyes were gleaming, there was something about them he just couldn't forget. The way they stood confused; unsure and still ready to hide her feelings when she felt like she had to. The way they stood angry, the way they stood happy.. Her cilia were so jetty and raven could seduce every single man on this planet. They were long and curly and he could honestly not remember the time they looked better with mascara on.
His eyes dropped to her lips. Full, strawberry-red, plumped, juicy. Alexia used to put on strawberry gloss all the time, knowing Jason would admire her endlessly. She knew his weak spot and he knew what it was as well. Usually the entire area around her would be weakly nourished with the slight smell of sweet strawberry, but this time there was nothing to smell.
A little snowflake was somewhere on the middle of her lower lip and Jason couldn't help but brush his thumb along her lip, feeling the snowflake melt on his finger.
She didn't flinch and kept her gaze on his.
Horns started blaring through the air and Jason immediately pulled back, pushing his foot against the engine bar. The car roared forward and he licked his lips, mildly irked by how he had let himself go. She was engaged, for God's sake.
Alexia knew Jason well enough to realize that he wasn't going to respond to her question in words. Also, the way he had touched her just seconds ago was enough of an answer.
"Never mind, then." She muttered, trying to smile.
Jason hastily looked at her and forced a smile as well. Taking a deep breath, Alexia instantly opened her mouth. "Can we stop being this awkward?"
"We're not awkward."
"Yes we are and I know it's kind of a hard situation, but I enjoy being with you and I hope we can stay friends after this all."
He laughed scoffingly, knowing he could never be 'just friends' with her, but after he saw the pleading expression on her face, he rolled his eyes dramatically. "Christ! Fine!"
Alexia clapped her hands and turned up the music.
Jason couldn't help but laugh, sort of liking that she cut all of the tension with only one look and one sentence. Of course he would never see her as a friend only, but he could act like it, right?
Loud piano sounds filled the car, making both Jason and Alexia widen their eyes. She squealed and gasped, "you still have this song?" Jason didn't even know he still had this song. After she quieted down, she started rapping along, making him laugh again.
"Baby you my everything, you all I ever wanted,
We can do it real big
Bigger than you ever done it
You be up on everything
Other hoes ain't never on it
I want this forever, I swear I can spend whatever on it,"
She eyed him, telling him to continue the song. Since it was only Alexia, he did it.
"Cause she hold me down every time I hit her up
When I get right I promise that we gon' live it up
She make me beg for it till she give it up
And I say the same thing every single time,"
Looking at each other they started the refrain together, him repeatedly dropping gazes on her and her just staring at him since she had no driving to do.
Jason grinned half and looked at her, "I say you the fucking best,
You the fucking best
You the fucking best
You the fucking best
You the best I ever had,
Best I ever had,
Best I ever had."
He kept remembering when they used to put this song on, both turning up on it like no other. He remembered the times she was upset; he'd visit her house in the dark of the night, use the spare key and slip past her brother's rooms, sneaking into hers. He'd look at her, brush his thumb along her sticky cheek and he'd put on this song, pushing earphones into her ears. She'd wake up and he'd comfort her. Just like always.
How can he not fall in love with her all over again? Especially after her wanting to be friends with him, especially after her remembering their song?
When the song finished, she repositioned herself in the seat and looked at him. Just like she had been doing the entire time. "Where are you taking me?"
"Your place. That's where you were heading, right?"
"I was, yeah."
"Well good, then." He scratched his neck awkwardly, trying to hide his nerves. He wasn't going inside anyway, but it was still going to be weird seeing the huge house. Fuck, he'd get nauseous.
"You don't have to drive me all the way over there, you know. The house is empty because we took most of our stuff to LA with us. Plus, we're using the two gaming rooms as bedrooms now so my mom is decorating that too. You can just drop me off somewhere else."
"Somewhere else as in--where?"
"I have no idea, just not at my house." Alexia pushed her cheek against the window and sighed.
"You just don't want me there, do you?" It was no question, it was more of an accusation.
"I don't." She sighed, covering her face with her hands. Jason didn't prod and pushed away the splitting feeling in the pit of his stomach. Stupid.
"I don't want you to see Damian," she mumbled, not looking at him. "It's going to be awkward. I don't handle awkward situations well. Besides, my mom wouldn't be too happy about it."
Jason kept his eyes on the road, though contemplating what she'd said. He knew she was right, but it had still stung a little.
"I'm sorry for the way I acted that one time." Alexia glanced at him, an apologetic smile gracing her lips. "I was out of line. That was fucked up for me to say. I'm sorry."
"I know."
The rest of the ride was in silence aside from Alexia's low singing whenever she heard a song she liked and Jason asking her what turn to take. Alexia told him to stop when they were nearing the house, but he ignored her and kept driving until he parked right next to the gigantic fountain he hadn't seen for years.
The house was exactly the same.
There were a lot of men unloading trucks, walking in and out. Alexia quickly opened the door and got out, shuffling to Jason's side. He rolled down the window and looked at her.
"Thank you, for driving me all the way here."
"It's a'ight."
"Greet your parents for me. And Jazzy and Jaxon."
"Will do."
It was silent again and the two only looked at each other.
"I better go." She muttered, breaking their stare for the first time. Jason nodded and licked his lip. "Enjoy your weekend."
"You too."
And with those words, Alexia turned around and tiptoed to the grand door in the middle of the mansion. Jason drove away as fast as he could, but not fast enough to not see the tall, hazel man that wrapped his arms around her petite frame and kissed her passionately. He wasn't fast enough to not hear him ask, "Who dropped you off?" and he sure as hell wasn't fast enough to not hear Alexia reply with "just a friend."
-
"Jason! Sweetheart, come in," The high pitched voice of his dear mother made him look up and smile genuinely, pulling the short woman into a warm embrace. They saw each other every week, but that didn't mean he didn't miss his family.
"Took you long?"
"I dropped off some friend who didn't have a ride. Nothing big. Hey--is that--do I smell pizza?"
"You're such a good man!" His mother, Pattie, grabbed his cheeks and pinched them softly before she planted a kiss on his forehead. He clenched his jaw and felt red rush all upon his cheeks.
"Okay, okay, we get it. Let's just go eat, ma'."
It was warm, the dinner table was covered with pizzas and Jason was surrounded by his family. It was quite the relief compared to the hard week he had had and after he changed into sweats upstairs in his room, he instantly gathered around the dinner table with his mother, father and siblings.
"Jason! We made muffins today in school and the teacher said we could make one for everyone in the family! But we were out of blue cream so I used purple. I'm so sorry." Jazzy's lower lip trembled and she pouted. Jason chuckled, pressing a chaste kiss on her puffy cheeks. "I love purple! Don't worry baby."
She exhaled in relief. "Good."
"Should we go shopping tomorrow? We haven't done that in a while, huh?"
"Yes!" She squealed and he laughed again in satisfaction, turning his attention to Jaxon. "And you'll get new toys too. Want to join?"
"Yes! I want too! Jaxon wants too!" Jaxon clapped and Jason could hear his parents laugh.
"Good, then that's set."
As they all ate pizza and talked about their past week, Jason kept thinking about Alexia. How she looked, how much she'd grown, how childish she still was, how she told him she loved her fiancé. How excited she was for the wedding.
He kept re-seeing Alexia kissing that tall, broad man (whom he assumed was Damian) and his feelings kept getting crushed every, single, time.
Besides, she had referred to him as just some friend.
What could be worse?
"Maria is taking the weekend off," Pattie spoke after swallowing her food, "I told her it's fine. It's fine, right? The poor woman works so hard!"
Both Jeremy and Jason nodded in unison. "It's fine by me. She does work too hard, besides, I see her on campus all the time." Jason shrugged with a full mouth.
"How is college? Anything new?"
Jason shook his head. "Same old, same old."
"Ryan and Chaz?"
"Just like always."
"Great. Ryan's mom invited us for dinner tomorrow evening. Apparently there's a game. You're coming?"
"Yes mom."
"Good." Pattie narrowed her eyes, looking at Jason. He raised his eyebrows, waiting for her to say what else was on her mind.
"Are you... okay? You don't seem okay."
"I'm fine, ma'. Nothing's wrong."
"You're my son. I know when something's up. Don't hide anything from me." Pattie knit her eyebrows together and leaned her chin on the palm of her hands, staring at her son. Jason rolled his eyes and leaned backwards against the chair, not showing the least bit of emotions. "I told you, I am fine. I am not smoking anything, my grades are... well... at least I'm not failing. Me and the boys are good, I have no trouble with the police whatsoever, I'm happy."
He was not.
Pattie obviously hadn't believed him, but she had nothing else to say. After dinner, Jason covered himself in a warm jacket and a pair of sneakers, huddling to the front door. "Mom, dad, I'm out! I'll be back!"
His father had given him a small 'okay' and with that, Jason left the house.
Although he was wearing all sorts of self-protection against the cold, it started gliding into his clothes, making his skin perk up. Every time he exhaled, a big cloud of mist slipped out of his mouth and made it seem like he was smoking, which he found enjoyable.
"It's McCann!" A low, hoarse voice woke him up from his thoughts and he looked up, seeing the basketball court he was planning on visiting. There was a small circle of guys, all dressed warmly, in the middle. Some of them were sitting, some of them were standing.
"It's been long, bro." The first and tallest guy murmured, hugging Jason in that mankind-ish way. Jason nodded and greeted the others.
He didn't know all their names quite well, but he did know that the person he hugged first was called Timothy and that Timothy could help him with basically everything. Him and Jason were pretty close and bonded through weed.
"Timothy?"
"Don't call me that you fucker."
Jason chuckled softly. "Bumper, then."
Timothy hated his name more than anything and always called himself Bumper, just like everyone else called him. God knows where that name comes from. "Don't ask, I have everything you need." And with those words, Bumper fished a little sack out of his pocket and showed Jason the content, receiving an impressed hum from Jason.
An hour later they were all stoned off their minds and horny, very, extremely horny. Jason stumbled to the first girl he laid his eyes on and flirtatiously snaked an arm around her waist, whispering all sorts of bullshit into her ear. He didn't even know what language he was speaking, but since the girl was just as off as he was, she giggled every single time.
"You're hot." She mumbled, running a hand through her blonde hair. Jason grinned and stroked his hand all along her thigh. "Let's go inside Bumper's place." Not only was he crazily turned on and aching for sex again, it was freezing outside and he knew Bumper always kept his place open for everyone who felt like using it. Especially Jason, since he referred to him as one of his best friends.
"Yeah, let's do that." She slurred, wrapping her arms around his neck tightly. "Lift me up."
Jason did just that, lifting her up bridal and slumping forwards on the field. "We're off to your place, Bumper," he got out when he walked past Bumper. Bumper patted his shoulder shortly as he returned to his conversation.
The moment Jason and the girl walked in Bumper's apartment, Jason tripped and the girl fell out of his arms. They both burst out in laughter and after they finally reached Bumper's bed room, they had long, lazy, stoned sex.
All he could think about was Alexia.
