#3: fun and games
"Bianca! Let's do that one!" Beth yelled happily. I laughed as she dragged me towards a fortune telling booth.
"You know these aren't real right? I doubt the school actually got a fortune teller for this carnival," I said, rolling my eyes at Beth, an amused smile resting on my face.
"Yeah, yeah, it's not real. Doesn't mean it isn't fun!" Beth winked. She pulled me under the tent and lead me to the front, where there were three tables.
The first one was made of white wood with beads scattered on the table. Cards were strewn across the rough wood. The girl sitting behind the table was tall, and her hair was tied into a messy bun. I recognised the girl as Sadie, a girl from my history class.
The second table was made of cheap plastic. There wasn't much on the table, and a boy, whom I didn't know, was sitting on a stool. The queue for that table wasn't long.
The third table was made of smooth oak wood. Bits and pieces of jewellery laid around on the table. Sitting on the middle of the table was a crystal ball. The girl behind the table looked up at me and smiled cruelly.
"You. Bianca Grace. Come here," she beckoned.
I looked at Beth uncertainly, but all my best friend did was shrug and push me towards the girl who I realised was Charlotte, Ray's ex-girlfriend.
I sat uncomfortably on the chair, opposite to Charlotte. She smiled at me once again, but the smile didn't reach her eyes.
"Now.. lets do some fortune telling, shall we?" Charlotte said, using a tone so high pitched it was getting creepy.
Charlotte chanted some words, every now and then rubbing the crystal ball. I sighed impatiently. She smiled at me eerily, her eyes looking at me with pity.
"Ah, Bianca. Your fortune is a little.. special.
You will never feel welcomed by others,
those close to you will break your trust,
the only love you have is that of your mother's,
and all happiness will drown fast enough,"
Charlotte recited cheerfully, as if she had been practicing it multiple times and was waiting for the time she could finally say it to me.
I rolled my eyes again and stood up.
"Nice talking to you, Charlotte, but I'll just take this as my cue to leave," I sneered. Charlotte laughed.
"Oh you are so not ready," she said, a glint of mischief in her eyes. Beth looked between the both of us curiously. Charlotte picked up one of the bracelets on the table- a simple silver chain with charms attached to it- and threw it at me. I caught it instinctively.
She smirked at me and waved.
"Good luck, Bianca, you'll need it." And with that, Charlotte walked out through the back of the tent.
I stood there, staring at the seat Charlotte had been occupying just a second ago. I shook my head, getting over my shock.
I clasped the bracelet onto my wrist and walked out of the purple tent with Beth.
"That was weird," Beth piped up.
"Tell me about it."
