Chapter Fifteen
Katelyn's point of view
"Katelyn, you were adorable on that television interview." Jacob said as he gave me a hug. "You didn't talk much but you were adorable."
"Thanks. The whole time being I just wanted the couch to swallow me up." I said and laughed a bit. "I missed school for that stupid interview."
"I got you answers for some of your tests." He said and I cheered. He handed me a strip of paper and I looked at them.
"This is awesome, you're the best." I said and gave him another hug.
"It's nothing." He said and I nodded. "Anyways, um, am I still coming over to your house for dinner?"
"Yeah, it's at six." I told him and he nodded. "You don't have to bother with the fancy dressing and stuff. It's okay." I said and he nodded.
"Good, the fanciest thing in my closet is my button-ups." He told me and I chuckled as he ran a hand through his hair.
"I want to dye my hair." I sighed and he smiled a bit. "Luke said I couldn't because the school doesn't allow it." I told him.
"It's not like they'll make you dye it back. Half the girls here have dyed hair, you just can't tell because they're natural colors." He said and I nodded.
"I wanted to dye my hair like lavender because Michael had it lavender before and he looked really good." I said and he laughed.
"Maybe one day we can buy hair dye and I'll dye it for you. The guys won't just make you bleach it out, that's damaging your hair." He told me.
"Hm..." I said while thinking about it. "I am so in." I said and he nodded. "Pastel colors for life."
"So kawaii." He said and I looked at him as he blushed. "I uh don't pay attention to me. I didn't say anything." He said and the bell rang.
"Not like you say anything wrong but whatever." I said and chuckled. "Come on, let's get to class." I told him and he nodded.
-
"Please please please be nice guys." I begged the four guys. "He's really sweet and really caring and he actually looks up to some of you. Don't screw this up."
"You have nothing to worry about love." Calum said and pulled me close. "So his name is Jacob eh? Is he cute?"
"He's sixteen so get those illegal fantasies out of your head," I said and he laughed. "But he is sixteen yes."
"Okay. He should be here soon." Ashton said ad he checked his watch. "Michael can open the door while Katelyn helps me set the table."
"Oh fine." I hugged and then pulled my white skinny jeans up. I followed him to the kitchen and he handed me six plates.
"Please don't try to act all posh and stuff too. Just be yourselves." I said to him and he laughed and he grabbed some forks and spoons.
"Stop worrying Katelyn. It's fine. Have some faith in us." He said as I followed him to the dining table. I set the plates down and then sighed.
"Sorry, it's just, Michael and Luke already scared him and stuff. I just don't want there to be yelling and arguing." I told him and he chuckled.
"There won't be, it's okay." He said and smiled as there was a knock on the door. "I mean, honestly, from the way you talk about him, I doubt he's some criminal or drug dealer or something. He sounds like a nice kid."
"He is." I said and smiled as I set the last plate down. He nudged me and I hummed as I heard Michael's voice.
"I um, I forgot to mention this when we first met, but your car is beautiful. Who got it for you?" Michael asked and I looked up, seeing the two walk in.
"My-My uncle gave it to me. It ran in the family and he got the car instead of my dad. He gave it to me since he didn't have kids of his own and when I have kids, my eldest kid will get it on their sixteenth birthday and so forth." He explained and I chuckled.
"Hi Jacob." I said and he stopped. He looked at me and then smiled. "What's up?"
"Hey Kate," he said and smiled a bit. "I um just talking to your dad about my car." He said and nodded towards Michael.
"I see." I said and went up to him. "So you met Luke already and I know you know them already, but this is Calum and this is Ashton." I said and he chuckled.
"I'm Jacob-"
"So you're the famous Jacob." Calum said and looked at me. "He is cute. Nice going Katelyn." Calum said and I scowled at him.
"Calum..."
"It's my job to be the embarrassing mum since you have two dads okay?' He said and I rolled my eyes and Jacob laughed a bit.
"I like your hair bud." Ashton said and Jacob looked at him. "A little birdy told me you're a fan?"
"Is that little bird blonde and standing right in front of me?" He asked asked he sent me a playful glare. I giggled and shrugged as I looked at Ashton. "Yeah um, I'm at fan. She's Kinda Hot and Hey Everybody are some of my favorites."
"I'm glad man." Ashton said and the two shared the 'bro-hug'. "Dinner is almost ready, so just go sit with the otherz while me and Calum go in the kitchen."
"Okay." He said and the two left us with Luke and Michael. "I can't believe you told them." He said and I chuckled.
"It may have slipped." I said and he rolled his eyes. "Come sit down. Luke and Michael don't bite." I said and he rose an eyebrow at me.
"Fine." He said and let me drag him towards the couch. "You have a nice house." He commented and Luke chuckled.
"Thanks man." He said and Jacob just nodded. "May I ask, why is your hair such a light shade of pink? It's almost feminine you know?"
"Luke!" Michael said. "Let a boy dye his hair whatever color he wants. If I dyed my hair that color again, what would you do?"
"Not very appropriate to say in front of them babe." Luke muttered and I rolled my eyes.
"Do they always do that?" Jacob asked me and I nodded. "Okay..." He said strangely and I laughed.
"I just put up with it. I mean, I can't stop them so it's whatever." I said and he nodded. "Anyways, don't you work today?"
"My aunt said it's the Friday before break, I had hundreds of tests so she gave me the day off to relax and stuff. I go back on Monday so I have the weekend off and the mornings since I start at five." He explained and I nodded.
"That's good, at least she cares enough to let you have the day off. That's sweet of her." I said and he nodded. "Who took your shift?"
"Don't know." He said sith a shrug and I nodded. He was going to speak but then Ashton yelled out that dinner was ready.
"Prepare for questions."
"Okay." He said and we stood up. I tugged my cropped maroon sweater down and then he followed me to the table.
We sat down and he took the spot next to me while Michael took the other spot beside me. Ashton and Calum put all the food out and I grabbed Jacob's hand, immediately catching his and Michael's attention.
"What happened to your knuckles?" I asked him since they were red and one or two had a small cut on them.
"Punching drywall doesn't hurt until after your anger subsides." He said and I nodded.
"Why did you punch the drywall?" Calum asked as the guys began to feed themselves. I guess Michael made my plate already because mine was full of food.
"My mum's boyfriend um did something that really angered me and after I kicked him out, I punched the wall. It was wrong of me but it happened and now there's a hole in our wall." He said and Ashton nodded.
"So your parents are divorced then?" He asked as Jacob began to put food on his own plate. "How long?"
"They divorced when I was like five I think. My mum has been on and off dating this, excuse my language, asshole." He said and Ashton nodded.
"Do you have any siblings?" Luke asked him and he nodded. "How many?"
"I have a little sister, she's like ten. She loves pale pink and so I dyed my hair that color, to answer your earlier question." Jacob lied and he nodded.
"That's really sweet." Luke told him and he just have a small smile and a shrug. "You don't have any brothers?"
"I did, but he died when he was a child. I don't really like talking about it." He said and Luke nodded, apologizing quickly. "It's okay, you didn't know."
"So Jacob, you smoke then? Michael said he saw you one time." Calum said and I sighed. They're interrogating him, good lord.
"Yeah. I started at fifteen because my mum's boyfriend smoked. He said it relieved stress and since I was failing school and we didn't have the most glamorous life back then, I just started to try it. Now, I'm hooked." He said and he nodded.
"How often?"
"Depending on the day and my mood." He answered and Calum nodded. "Sometimes it's once a day, sometimes is three times. Sometimes it's every other day, it all depends."
"This has been bothering me ever since I found out, so why did you flunk a year?" Ashton asked him and he took a drink of a glass of water we set out earlier.
"Life's tough," he said and Ashton nodded. "Especially when you're fourteen, fifteen, staying home to take care of your sister and mother, doing small jobs to help pay rent, having to study for tests, and having people call you a freak for not being like them. I just didn't really have time to fit school in so I missed a lot of day and failed tests."
"That's terrible." Luke said and he nodded. "You're fine now though right? Everything's on track?" He asked.
"Somewhat. I'm going to school almost every day and I'm making room to study before and after my shift. The money my mother and I make go to the bills and all the necessities we need and yeah. I'd say we're somewhat on track." He said and Luke nodded.
"Where do you work at?" Michael asked him, seeming a bit sympathetic. "Somewhere nice yeah?"
"My aunts little diner along the boardwalk. It's wonderful because the view of the sunset and stuff. It's perfect for now." He said and Michael nodded.
"We totally pegged you wrong Jacob." Luke said and Jacob chuckled a bit. "We thought wrong of you, we're sorry. Me and Michael are sorry."
"It's fine. It happens a lot so I'm used to it." He said and Michael nodded. "I mean, I understand. I probably would think that I'm a bad guy too if I were you."
"What do you like doing in your free time Jacob? I figure you're getting a bit tired of these personal questions." Calum asked him.
"I like art, poetry, and playing instruments. My mum's boyfriend owns a lot of instruments and let's me play them, thinking it makes up for his behavior. It doesn't, but like, I won't just pass up the offer." He said and Ashton chuckled.
"I know what you mean dude. I was the same." Ashton said and nodded. "Funny huh? How they think a few small acts of kindness can make up for everything wrong they did?"
"Hysterical." Jacob said and the two chuckled. "So yeah um, that's it really. I'm not a sporty person, though I seem like it, and yeah."
"You like Sum 41?" Michael asked and Jacob looked down at his band shirt. "What's your favorite song?"
"I don't have a favorite but the first song I listened to was Fat Lip and I was like 'this is my shit' and then listened to them some more. Thus, my love blossomed for them." He said and I chuckled.
"He made me listen to Walking Disaster by them during lunch one time and I was like, where was this song all my life?" I said and Michael chuckled.
"They're a great band."
"They are. Does anyone else here listen to the bands Three Days Grace or Bon Jovi?" Jacob asked and I looked at him. His eyes were shining and he had a smile on his lips. "Sorry, I uh get excited when people listen to the same bands as me and I go overboard."
There goes that smile and those bright hazel eyes.
"No Jacob, it's fine. We listen to them a lot, especially me and Michael." Ashton said and chuckled. "Don't ever apologize for getting excited about something you're passionate about and stuff. It's fine." He said and Jacob nodded.
"Now, about Three Days Grace..."
