Chapter 36

Dr. Kim had performed most of the initial exam, ordered labs and was proceeding to a more indepth neurological assessment when he noticed Caroline squinting her eyes. "Are you alright, Caroline. Are you in pain?".

Caroline blinked a few times, she was beginning to have visual disturbances in her right eye. "The room is very bright, I think that's what the problem is" she replied.

"Describe what you're feeling, seeing" he told her.

Caroline explained how there was a flickering light in her peripheral vision and that she began to see distorted, colorful zigzags in the center of her vision.

"Have you experienced this before" he asked as he turned off the light and used his retina scope to examine her eye.

"Not both at the same time, usually one or the other. Pain usually starts after the zigzags appear and start to expand. That causes me to lose vision in that eye."

"It appears at the moment you are experiencing both an ocular migraine, which is a migraine within the eye itself as well as a classic migraine. We will stop the exam for now so that you can rest and continue tomorrow. You did make arrangements to stay a few days, correct" he asked.

"Yes, I have a room at the hotel across the street" she answered, her vision beginning to fade.

"Did anyone come with you" he asked while prepping an injection to give her.

She wanted to lie and say yes in fear he would admit her to the hospital if she told him no but she couldn't.  She came here for answers, not being completely honest wasn't going to help the situation "No sir, I haven't told anyone I'm here. I want to get answers first and not cause unnecessary worry."

"I see. Well, I have an injection I can give you that would require you to have someone with you for the next 24 hrs which would mean admitting you to the hospital due to being alone. Or, I can give you 2 tablets of another medication that will subside your symptoms and let you rest in your hotel room until tomorrow. I'm giving you the option of choice".

Caroline thought for a moment, she didn't want Tim to know she was in the hospital, being Houston was only an hour from Nederland she felt someone would surely find out. If anyone saw her at the hotel she could at least fabricate a story about staying there for the school internship.

"I would appreciate being able to stay in my hotel room so the oral medication is my choice" she stated with a bit of fear in her eyes.

Dr. Kim handed her the tablets and a cup of water. "Take these now, get dressed and meet me in my office". He made a few notations in her chart while she took the pills before heading out of the exam room.

Caroline dressed quickly, at this point all she wanted to do was get to her room and lay down. The nurse had returned and walked back to his office with her, opening the door for her, waiting for further instructions. Dr. Kim was at his desk still writing in her chart. Caroline sat in the chair, wringing her hands in her lap.

"I will have an orderly assist you in getting to the hotel. We have an enclosed walkway that starts from the lobby of the main part of the hospital that will give you access between the two buildings. I want you to use that to travel back and forth while you are here.  It is safer than you trying to cross the street. You must rest before tomorrow's tests. Here is my direct cell number should you have any problems.  I want you to call me if your discomfort doesn't subside or increases. Ok?" he advised her.

Caroline was beginning to feel overwhelmed and tears began to well up in her eyes. Dr. Kim handed her the tissues "I know you're afraid, we will get you the answers you came here for" he tried reassuring her with a slight smile. "Nurse Janzic will help you with your things and walk you to the lobby to meet the orderly who will take you to the hotel. We will see you tomorrow at 8 am, alright" he advised.

Caroline nodded, collected her things and walked out with the nurse. Her mind clouded by the discomfort and the medication, she walked slowly with the nurse who was holding her by the arm.

"Are you and that handsome, polite Texan still together" the nurse asked with a smile. Caroline looked at her questionably. "His name was Tim, yes Tim Foust" she stated.

"How do you know Timothy" she asked feeling a bit jealous about this woman knowing him.

"We met last year when he brought you into the University hospital, when you were initially diagnosed with migraines. I was the nurse taking care of you" she smiled.

"Oh, I am so sorry I didn't recognize you today" Caroline apologized.

"That's quite all right. You weren't in any condition to notice anyone around other than Tim at the time"

Caroline vaguely remembered that night other than Tim staying by her side reassuring her everything would be ok and taking care of her.

"Yes, Timothy and I are still together. He's away at the moment for a week, he's a musician, a singer songwriter " she boasted.

"He doesn't know you're here, does he" Nurse Janzic asked.  Caroline shook her head no as she looked away. "I know it's none of my business but don't you think he should know. That man loves you more than life itself. I saw how he looked at you, cared for you that night. And I remember the fear in his eyes when he was scared to let you out of his sight for the CAT scan. He even said as I helped you both to the car, that you were his life".

Caroline began to cry feeling guilty she was keeping this from him "I can't let him know, not yet" she said through the tears. Nurse Janzic pulled her into a comforting hug as the orderly approached "he will understand" she whispered before they walked away.
