A Merry Megane Mishap
Make my wish come trueee
Baby all I want for Christmas is you~
"Ooohh baby!" Aida Riko sways along to the English Christmas song even though singing is not one of her most amazing skills.
"Riko, it's boxing day! Why are you playing Christmas music!" Shinji-san whines.
"T'is the season!" I put my arm around my closest guy friend.
"Hurry up you two! Stop being cliche and get back in the game!" Hyuga-kun sulks.
"You ought to get back in there, Yuiri-san, Koganei-san. Especially you, Yuiri-san, you're the one who started this." Tsuchida-kun encourages meekly. Shinji-san and I nod.
"I swear, Yuiri-chan, you always convince them to play." Riko-chan sighs as the ball bounces on the Aida gym's shiny basketball court. Tsuchida-kun is sat beside her. He nods once. He didn't want to play since he found it would be unfair to play me.
I would lie and say that I didn't know how we ended up playing, but I do. The terrible snowy weather put a dampener on everybody's mood so to lift everybody's spirits, I suggested that we play ball. I figured it would be the perfect solution since even when we were exchanging gifts, we were easily annoyed.
I have no problem playing alongside the boys, I rarely get the chance, since males and females aren't meant to play against one another. So I guess I find it really fun when I get the chance to play against the boys. Too bad they are really really skilled.
The girls' basketball team sometimes practise here, however, I've never been here after hours; despite being friends with Aida Riko since elementary school. It's a lot warmer in here than outside. The contrast in temperature made condensation form on my glasses as well as Hyuga-kun's.
We've been playing for ten minutes already. The scores are equal; five points each.
I feel so out of my depth on this court against such skilled players. I'm good at basketball but I feel like I'm playing against monsters or robots. My friend Riko-chan has clearly drilled strategies into the second years' brains. It's actually really scary to see the match regulars working like machines. My friend Koganei Shinji his friend Mitobe Rinnosuke aren't as uniform. It's easier to pass Shinji-san by and get the ball from him but I'm usually stopped almost instantly by his teammates, the "Iron Heart" of basketball, Kiyoshi Teppei and the affectionately nicknamed "Unspoken Hero of Serin", Mitobe Rinnosuke. Offence is a nightmare with those two around. No wonder they're doing so well as a newly formed team.
Serin High School had a girls' basketball team for two years prior to Kiyoshi-kun setting up a boys basketball team, you would think that that would make me better, but it didn't. I only use my shorter height to receive lower passes from Hyuga-kun and Izuki-kun. I've seen them use those passes on shorter team members such as Shinji-san.
"Oi Mitobe! Pass!" Shinji-san enthuses. The taller player passes the cat faced boy the ball.
"Here kitty kitty kitty." I tease, leaning backward and forward on the balls of my feet, totally chilled out as I poke my tongue out at Shinji-san. He was in my class last year and had got along pretty well. In fact, we hung out a few times after school. I helped the lazy yet enthusiastic kitty faced boy study. I think that may be the reason that he has accepted the cat jokes I make, for which I am glad. As payback, he usually makes digs at the fact that I have terrible eyesight; calling me "Batty" or variations of a bat.
Okay, I was clearly too chilled out, I nearly toppled over!
"You're not even on my team, batty!" Shinji-san tries to shoot. I jump to intercept the ball and land wrongly, resulting in me toppling onto my butt. I groan as my glasses end up on the tip of my nose.
This is why I don't wear the good pair for sports; no way I would want my good pair of glasses being used and potentially broken during game play. I kind of expected that we would end up on the court today so opted to wear the replaceable pair of cheap glasses. I've broken a pair or two in actual games. I never got how Hyuga Junpei was able to keep his own glasses on. Does he use glue? Does he staple them to his skull? Maybe they were melted into the skin. Okay that's a LITTLE extreme but hey, I've NEVER seen him take off his glasses!
"Yuiri-san." Kiyoshi Teppei holds his hand out to me. I push up my glasses before taking his hand and standing. The ball bounces off of my foot and rolls past the boys on the opposing team; Shinji-san, Mitobe-kun and Kiyoshi-kun.
"Seriously?" Hyuga Junpei, my classmate and friend grimaces, shooting while the opposing defenders are helping me to my feet. "Gentlemanly behaviour won't help you on the court."
"Hyuga-kun is right." I murmur, brushing myself off. This was meant to be a Christmas party. That didn't exactly work.
"You say that now, but you would hate for us to play you, completely disregarding that you're a girl, Batty." Shinji-san declares.
"You do realise that Hyuga-kun just scored, right?" I flash a winning smile at the trio before getting to my feet and joining Izuki Shun on the other side of the court.
"Coach, why are we playing with Yuiri-san?" Hyuga-kun asks his coach and most likely girlfriend, Riko-chan.
"Because, Hyuga-kun, Yuiri-chan is the ace of the girls team! A formidable opponent."
"Too bad you guys will always be better than me." I sigh over dramatically, causing myself to laugh. A lot.
"You're too carefree, Yuiri-san." Kiyoshi-kun smiles.
"Bet you wish you could be as free as me!" I do a little twirl in my borrowed squeaky basketball shoes, again, I nearly topple over. Kiyoshi-kun rolls his eyes, a fond smile gracing his face.
"Ready to play?" Hyuga-kun has passed Shinji-san the ball so we can resume game play.
"I don't even remember how we ended up doing this." Riko-chan sighs. "But when with Yuiri-chan, it's inevitable."
"Well thanks, Riko-chan." I turn to speak to my friend.
"Yuiri-san!" everybody shouts in unison.
Thunk!
Yeah...that was the ball on my head. Ouch. I put my hand to the back of my head and force a smile, despite the ringing in my head. I hate getting hit in the head with the basketball, it's so embarrassing! My hand goes to my nose since I had clamped my eyes shut upon impact. Dammit! My glasses.
Smash!
Well that didn't sound too good.
"Uhh Batty?" Shinji-san murmurs.
"I can't see without my glasses." I mutter, hand rubbing across the floor in a bid to grab the frames.
Crunch!
Did someone kick them?
"Here. Take my hand, Batty." Shinji-san holds his hand out to me. "Please open your eyes."
"Not without my glasses. I get headaches without them!" I shake my head as Shinji-san and god knows who else steer me to a seat.
"Hey, Hyuga, c'mere!" Kiyoshi-kun calls. I hear a muffled squabble before a pair of frames are placed in my palm. I place them on my face and open my eyes.
"Think she'll notice?" Izuki-kun asks.
"WOAH THESE ARE NOT MY GEGS!" I declare theatrically. Everybody seems used to the 'affectionate' nickname I gave my glasses. All of my glasses are my 'gegs' just because they look a bit like goggles. "Man, Hyuga-kun, you can't see for shit."
"How did you know they were mine?"
"Because you're not wearing yours. Who broke my glasses?" I demand.
"Hyuga!" everybody points to the guy who handed over his own frames.
"We have the same condition, it was the least I could do since I broke your glasses."
"Your astigmatism must be the WORST!" I fold my arms.
"Would you rather just wander around blind?" Hyuga-kun folds his own arms, smirking, he turns to leave us alone and walks right into Kiyoshi-kun. I snigger.
"Can we mess with him?" Shinji-san asks.
"Hmmm..." Mess with Hyuga Junpei, the most uptight and stubborn and debatably most emotional of the boys on the Serin High School basketball team...? Is it really that hard of a choice? A small smile graces my face, giving Shinji-san a signal that I am cool with this.
"Of course we can mess with him! Izuki! The paper and markers!" Shinji-san enthuses.
"Nah, I'll help Hyuga before he dies or something." Izuki Shun jogs out toward where Hyuga-kun was heading.
"Kiyoshi! The paper and markers!"
"Hai." Kiyoshi-kun too looks eager to mess with Hyuga-kun.
"Batty, put cling film on one of the stalls in the ladies room.
"I refuse to clean up that mess." I state before heading over to where Riko-chan is. She's on the phone.
"Riko! What do you MEAN you're snowed in?"
"The doors are being blocked by snow. It's okay though! Don't worry! We all brought food and we can turn the heater on if we get too cold! There are showers here too! Everything will be fine dad! No, you don't have to worry about THEM, Yuiri-chan is with me."
I stopped caring as soon as she mentioned snow blocking the doors. I slowly take steps toward the window. I pull the curtains aside and gasp. We really are trapped inside! Brilliant! I'm lacking a pair of glasses that fit my prescription and now I'm snowed in my friends' father's gym! Meh, it could be worse; it could be Christmas eve. I'm glad we opted to throw this party on boxing day instead, even though it meant that we were giving gifts decorated with snowmen and stuff on boxing day. I guess that that really was the least of our problems.
"Ahh look at that." Shinji-san doesn't seem to mind the huge quantity of snow. "Isn't it pretty, Yuiri-ch-san?"
"It looks like your father won't be delivering your good pair and a cheap pair of glasses to you after all." Hyuga-kun's voice echoes from the doorway.
"We should take turns with the glasses, at least then both of us will suffer. It's unfair to force you to endure so much over a pair of poorly made glasses." I state.
"Whatever." Hyuga-kun shrugs, making his way to a chair without a hitch.
I head into the kitchen, Shinji-san is behind me. I take a sheet of cling film out of the box and hand it over. Kiyoshi-kun has already written out of order on lots of paper. He gets some tape from the sideboard. Kiyoshi-kun and I follow the skipping Shinji-san to the ladies bathroom.
"Riko-san only had the ladies room unlocked for tonight's party." Kyoshi-kun states.
Shinji-san begins to work on the stall he's pinpointed. He drapes the cling film over the toilet seat while Kiyoshi-kun and I tape "Out Of Order" statements on the other stalls, despite them all being completely okay.
"Now! Let us wait!" Shinji-san declares.
"Let us wait outside of the bathroom." Kiyoshi-kun suggests with a gentle smile.
"Hai!" I nod, dragging the cat like boy out of the bathroom by his woollen sleeve, covered in a cats with bells design.
We all wander over to the main body of the group. Hyuga-kun is being pressured to drink a whole two litre bottle of energy drink before going to the bathroom. I'm surprised that Hyuga-kun is accepting that challenge. I shrug to myself, he looks to me like the sort of person who would never back down, especially against a friend.
Hyuga-kun is almost finished with the bottle of energy drik but he seems really antsy, beads of sweat are forming on his forehead. He's fidgity, eyes locked on the smirking Izuki-kun's.
"He's going to give in!" Shinji-san enthuses. Hyuga-kun frowns.
"No he's not!" I defend. "I believe in you Hyuga-kun! You can finish it! C'mon!"
"Hyuga! Hyuga!" His friends begin to chant as he and Izuki-kun stare each other down.
"Hyuga! Hyuga!" I join in with the chanting.
"Hyuga! Hyuga!"
The now glassesless Hyuga-kun grabs the bottle and drains the last remnants before running toward the ladies room, the only open bathroom. I hear an angry yell.
"Shinji-saaaaaan." I chide with a giggle.
"He'll try and get revenge when it's his turn to wear the glasses!" Izuki-kun snorts a laugh.
"Uh oh." the smug grin on Shinji-san's face is replaced almost instantly by a horrified grimace. Everybody's seen Hyuga-kun at "clutch time". If that's him in a game, I wonder what he'll do when he is actually angry.
"Well we'll just have to prank Yuiri-chan too!" Riko-chan declares with a devilish smirk.
"Well thanks Riko-chan." I pout. "You do realise I'll be being extra vigilant right?" I cock a brow.
"It won't matter when you're blind as a bat, Batty." Shinji-san teases.
"Izuki I will kill you!" Hyuga-kun snarls.
"Hey!" Izuki-kun puts his hands up in surrender with an uneasy laugh. "It wasn't me this time!"
"Anybody want pizza?" Kiyoshi-kun asks from the staff room in the gym. Oh Kiyoshi-kun, you are truly the peacemaker of this team. Food is always the best medicine for anger. Especially pizza. I'm glad that Hyuga-kun insisted that we all bring frozen pizza tonight so Riko-chan doesm't have to cook.
Flashes of all of the disgusting foods that I have eaten out of politeness flash before my eyes. Man, those combinations were foul. Cake mix and protein powder was by far the worst.
"Sounds good to me!" I enthuse There is no way I'm letting Riko-chan's cooking will spoil my evening.
"Yeah!" Shinji-san pumps his fist. Mitobe nods. "Mitobe says he wants some too!"
"Alright!" Kiyoshi-kun chimes.
"Sounds great!" Riko-chan grins.
"Yeah." Hyuga has gritted teeth. I watch a swift hand move toward my face. I flinch. Nothing happens. I cock a brow, opening my eyes, immediately seeing a difference.
"WHO TOOK HYUGA-KUN'S GLASSES!" I stomp my foot, hand over my eyes so I don't strain them.
"Riko! Catch!" Shinji-san enthuses.
"Tch, Neko-chan." I mutter with a pout. I feel the glare from Shinji-san burning into my skull. I only call him that when I REALLY want to annoy him. I can hear the jeers as the glasses are being tossed around the room.
"Careful!" Kiyoshi-kun cautions.
"Right right!" Riko-chan waves him off. "Izuki-kun! Catch!"
"Hai!" Izuki-kun jumps to seize Hyuga-kun's glasses.
"Can't you stop?" Hyuga-kun looks annoyed. His eye seems to be twitching.
Izuki-kun then tosses them to Hyuga-kun. He puts them on before hastily heading into the ladies bathroom.
"It's most likely the fingerprints all over the lenses." I shrug.
"The pizzas are ready!" Kiyoshi-kun enthuses. Tsuchida-kun gets to his feet to help aid Kiyoshi-kun in plating up.
We all kneel in a circle as the pizzas are placed before us. I am beside Shinji-san and Riko-chan. Hyuga-kun has re-joined the group, kneeling between Kiyoshi-kun and Riko-chan.
"Thank you for the meal!" we chorus before bowing our heads and starting to eat.
"You guys clearly know about us being snowed in by now. I'm sorry that we're stuck here." Riko-chan hangs her head.
"It's alright." I smile at her. "At least we're all together."
"But Yui-Batty, you're being deprived of your eyesight." Shinji-san protests.
"A killer headache is worth it. Hyuga-kun will be suffering more since his prescription is stronger." I shrug before taking a bite out of one of the pizza slices.
"Who cares is we're BOXED IN anyway?" Izuki-kun queries.
"Izuki." Hyuga-kun is clearly fed up. "I'll kill you if you don't shut up."
"Okay okay." his friend waves him off with a merry laugh.
"Oh, Hyuga, looks like some hair is stuck on the hinge of your glasses." Kiyoshi-kun says.
"What?" he looks confused.
"Must be Yuiri-chan's." Riko-chan shrugs.
"Blonde hair, Brings back memories, doesn't it?" Kiyoshi-kun sniggers.
"Huh?" I cock a brow.
"Didn't you know, Yuir-Batty?" Shinji-san asks.
"Know?" I cock a brow.
"Hyuga had blond hair for a while in first year." Izuki-kun states. My jaw drops.
"No way! Surely blond hair wouldn't suit him! He's too collected for a stand out hair colour." I resist.
"You're blonde too, Yuiri-ch-Batty." Shinji-san smirks.
"But blonde suits me!" I exclaim. "Because I'm bubbly and laid back and the complete opposite of Hyuga-kun! There is NO WAY he was blond."
"Look at his face!" Riko-chan sniggers.
"If you don't believe us, someone will have that group picture." Shinji-san declares.
Hyuga's face palens dramatically. He looks mortified.
"I've got it!" Kiyoshi-kun stands up and moves over to where I'm kneeling.
I stare at the photo. That's definitely the team. Beside Riko-chan is a blond with long hair and a fed up yet overly confidant expression. He's wearing wire glasses and his arms are folded.
"That was Hyuga-kun!" I exclaim with a laugh. Hyuga-kun hangs his head.
"That was Hyuga." Shinji-san says.
"That's insane!" I laugh. "It's clearly unnatural!"
"Well of course it was unnatural." Kiyoshi-kun says.
"He dyed his hair back to brown after calming down. Took him long enough." Izuki-kun states.
"It looks much better brown, Hyuga-kun. Some people just don't suit a colour of hair."
"Yeah!" Shinji-san puts his arm around my shoulders. "You wouldn't suit black hair, Yuiri-chan."
"That was a hasty change in honorifics." Tsuchida-kun murmurs.
"Y-you didn't call me Batty?" I cock a brow, alarmed.
"This pizza is pizzarific!" Izuki-kun declares.
"Izuki." Hyuga makes a fist. His eagle eyed friend laughs merrily at Hyuga's anger.
Once we finished the pizza I opt to sit away from the still happy and hyper boys, and their coach, Riko-chan. The Christmas music is on again. Riko-chan must have only provided one CD.
We wish you a merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas,
We wish you a merry Christmas,
And a happy new year,
"Do you think she's noticed it?" Hyuga-kun enquires.
My head lolls to the side as I sit on the bleachers.
"Do it! Do it! Do it!" voices chant. My eyes start to close.
"Hey Yuiri-chan." I feel a soft pressure on my cheek as I drift off. "Mistletoe."
