Chapter one
In the bustling streets of Diagon Alley, Hermione navigated her way to the pet shop Magical Menagerie. She had one mission: a pet. Preferably an owl, since her friends Harry and Ron had them too. To be honest Rons was a very old family owl but he had one, sending letters to her and Harry but she always had to go the next post office- which was in the Diagon Alley.
When entering the store Hermione was overwhelmed, there were cages everywhere on every free space on the wall. Her eyes wander around, eyeing the variation of animals until some red fur caught her eye. An orange cat- it looked pretty old and no one paid attention to it or bothering to look in its direction. "He has been here for quite some time." A soft voice said next to her. Following that tone she looks to her right to find a elderly woman. "No one wants that poor things." She continued. "I want him." She said without missing a beat. Even though she came for an owl, she could feel that this was the right decision. The elder woman took Hermione to cage, letting Hermione and the cat get to know each other. "He is a half Kneazle. That is why no one wants him. Half Kneazle only have half of the magical abilities than a full Kneazle does." "Does it have a name?" Hermione asks patting the half Kneazle in her arms. "He was once named Crookshanks." Nodding she takes her new pet to the counter to pay.
"I also need a medicine for a rat." "Buying a half-cat-half-kneazle but already having a rat? That poor rat." The woman says. "It's my friends rat, he said that it looked ill."
"Poor thing." The witch said.
"My friend went to vacation with the rat and ever since it looks like it lost colour."Hermione tries to explain the problem even though she doesn't even know exactly what was wrong with Scabbers.
"How old is the rat?" The witch asks.
"I don't really know," Hermione answers truthfully. "It was once his brothers rat, definitely older than 5 years." The witch nods, looking deep in thought.
"What kind of powers does it have?"
"None. It is a garden rat."
"And you said older than five years?" Hermione nods. "House and garden rats don't get older than three years. It is probably dying or something. Nothing much I can do about it." She shrugs her shoulders and pushes the cage with the half kneazle towards Hermione.
"Could you at least give me something?" The older witch reaches under the table and hand her vial with medicine. "Thanks." Hermione said and pays for both. Stepping out the noise changes from the shrieking animals to the excited chatter from the streets. It was the last day of summer break and everyone is doing their last minute shopping. Just as she was passing by some shops, she notices the white blonde hair and a raven black head. They are standing in front of Ollivanders wand shop.
"How is that any of your concern?" The voice from the Black haired asks. "It really isn't, I just can't stand seeing you disgracing the pure blood like you do." He replies. "You know that buying all of this will not give you any of the magic, right?" Her hand clutches the necklace around her neck, trembling out of anger. Hermione noticed. The scene before Hermione wasn't a rare situation, it was like if there was her there was also always a bully. a bully that was most of the time-
"Draco Malfoy!" Hermiones sharp voice echos between the small shops. "I can not believe you're still treating your fellow classmate like that." She comes to an halt next to the black haired girl. "You really can not let other live their life for 5 minutes." She huffs, so done with Draco Malfoys antics. He wanted to answer, provoked by her stern look, but didn't get the chance to as a big heavy hand lands on Hermiones shoulder pushing her away. She stumbles until she trips over her own feet and falls into Malfoys direction. Luckily still able to catch herself and prevent herself from falling into the boy she has just scolded. The person shoving her was the girls uncle, she was unfortunate enough to have already met him. Without losing a word the man drags the girl away with a strong grip around her wrist. The girl sends one last grateful look to Hermione before continuing to stumble after her uncle. "What in Merlins name just happened." Hermione whispers, her mind racing. Her eyes wander to the boy next to her, who also witnessed what has happened. His eyes still follow the girl and the man, much less hatred in them as before. Which couldn't be right, Draco Malfoy was not one to worry, especially about a girl who is a Squib. Taking a step away from him she notices his hand, it was stuck out like he was ready to catch her if he needed to. Not making a comment about that would be best, she decides.
"Hermione! Over here!" Someone shouted. It is Mr. Weasley who was sitting at Florean Fortescue's Ice cream parlor with Harry and Ron. Walking up to them with her new pet Kneazle in her left hand it didn't take too long for the two to notice that she did not bought an owl. "Hermione,, you are the smartest witch I know, yet you somehow mistook an cat for an owl." Ron said eying the kneazle. "I didn't, Ron" Hermione laughed, "I wanted an owl but I saw him and couldn't not buy him." She explains, taking the seat next Harry, who still has some ice cream which he is enjoying. "I saw what happened with Malfoy and Kai earlier." Harry said. "Are you okay? Her uncle pushed you quite hard."
"I am fine, Harry." She assures him.
Back in the Leaky Cauldron everyone went their own way to their rooms, putting everything they have bought away before dinner starts.
As Hermione walked through the corridors of the Leaky Cauldron, she heard a familiar voice. A door- not properly closed, let out a little light and voices from the room. The voice she has heard was that of Minister Fudge, "He is in great danger, Minister.", a female voice says with a hint of concern and great determination. "How can we in good conscience send the boy back to Hogwarts, being very well aware that Sirius Black, the man who betrayed his closest friends and killed a dozen innocent Muggles, is after him most likely to kill that poor boy."
"Oh, come on." Another, unfamiliar, voice says. "The boy survived once and he will again. Anyone that got away from being murdered with the unforgiveable will survive their maniac godfather." they continued. A female voice speaks again, "How dare you to even says this. But Hogwarts is the safest place for Mr. Potter to be. We teachers will keep an eye on him and make sure he's safe."-
"Are you lost?" A voice says next to her. In utter shock Hermione turned around to find the raven black haired girl.
"Merlin, Kai!" She whispers. "No need to scare me like that." They take a steps aways from the door, down the corridor.
"I'm sorry, Mione." Kai apologises. "I need to get something for my aunt and saw you standing here." She chuckles a bit. "By the way, thanks for earlier. Again. You really don't have to defend me every time."
"Oh, I know it is already hard enough to live the life you do, there is no need for an asshole like Malfoy to make it worse." Kai looks at Hermione with a thankful look on her face.
"I guess I am just very lucky to have you as my friend, Mione." She hugs Hermione and then turns into another corridor.
As the evening deepened, Harry and Hermione walked down the stairs, their steps synchronised with the lively hum of conversation that filled the Leaky Cauldron. Their anticipation grew as they approached a table where the Weasley family was seated. Tom had pushed multiple tables together for the Weasleys, Harry and Hermione to sit. Harry settled down next to a relatively young man, and Hermione sat down opposite them, a gentle smile gracing her face.
"Mione, this is Professor Lupin," Harry introduces him with a grin. "He's our new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Professor Lupin, this is my best friend, Hermione Granger."
A warm smile graced Lupin's lips as he greeted Hermione. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Granger. Harry's already told me a few things about you."
Hermione returned the smile, a hint of curiosity lingering in her voice. "Likewise, Professor Lupin. I look forward to learning from you, Professor."
"So, how was Egypt?" asked Harry, curious to hear about their holiday.
"It was absolutely brilliant!" exclaimed Ron, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "We saw the Great Pyramid and Bill took us on a tour of the Egyptian wizarding sites. You should have seen the Sphinx, Harry, it was huge!"
"It was a wonderful adventure," said Mrs Weasley, smiling fondly as she reminisced. "And Bill was such a gracious host. He showed us around, introduced us to his colleagues and even organised a special tour of the Egyptian Ministry of Magic."
"And the weather!" George added. "Hotter than a dragon's breath, I can tell you. Ron even tried to do a cooling charm, but then accidentally dyed his hair blue."
Ron sends him a scowl across the table and tries to justify himself, "It was Percy's idea to go out in the middle of the day and have to take us all with him. He could have gone on his own." Mrs Weasley gives Ron a stern look and he changes the subject.
"Ginny got to hold a real Egyptian cobra," Ron said. "Scared me half to death, but she liked it."
Ginny rolled her eyes, but couldn't help but smile. "It was amazing and exciting."
Hermione listens intently, her eyes shining with curiosity. "That sounds incredible! Have you visited any ancient tombs or temples?"
"Oh yes, we have!" Ron answered eagerly. "We explored the tombs of some old wizards and witches. It was a bit creepy, but fascinating."
"We even found some hieroglyphs that were similar to magical runes," Fred added.
Lupin, who had been sitting quietly at the table, turned to Mr Weasley, "Arthur, I've heard that they have a great interest in Muggles. Did you know that the ancient Egyptians had a complex system of maths and engineering that enabled them to build the pyramids with astonishing precision?"
Mr Weasley's eyes widened with curiosity. "Really? Without any magic at all? How did they manage that?"
Lupin nodded. "Indeed they did. 'They used simple tools like levers and ramps, together with their advanced understanding of geometry, to achieve remarkable feats of engineering. The Great Pyramid of Giza, for example, was built with such precision that its sides align almost perfectly with the cardinal points."
Mr Weasley's face lit up with excitement. "That's incredible! Muggles really are inventive."
"Oh, I just remembered," Professor Lupin says, directing his next words to Hermione. "Miss Granger, I promised the boys to give them flying lessons. Would you be interested in joining us?"
Hermione's eyes widened at the idea of flying on a broom again, it was exciting and frightening at the same time. She thinks for a moment before answering, "To be honest, Professor, I'm not particularly adept at flying. I've only done the compulsory lessons."
Lupin's reassuring smile eases her concerns a little. "There's no need to worry, Miss Granger. I'll be there to support you every step of the way. If you choose to accompany us, I will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience."
Hermione nodded, motivated by the offer to expand her skills, with a spark of determination in her eyes. "All right, Professor. I'll give it a go. It might come in handy, and who knows, maybe I'll surprise myself."
As dinner came to a close, Hermione found herself outside with her friends Harry and Ron in tow. Lupin gave her the basic instructions and points out the essentials she needed to practise while he looked after the eager boys, giving them tricks and tips.
"Ron, you'd better concentrate, otherwise these loops are more likely to turn into tangled knots," she teased with a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
While Ron and Harry were being shown looping tricks, Hermione was trying to find her balance on the broom.
Ron rolled his eyes, a grin playing around his lips. "Oh, come on, Hermione! You underestimate my flying skills. Just you wait and see!"
Time passes and as the trio continue to revel in their newly acquired skills, Hermione demonstrates her own mastery of the broom. She balances on one foot, the other foot resting gracefully on her knee in a tree yoga pose.
Harry's eyes widen, Hermione had always been reluctant to fly on a broom and now she was not only flying but balancing on one leg in front of him. "Hermione, that's incredible! Normally we could chase you with a broom, but look at you."
Professor Lupin looked on with a mixture of amusement and appreciation. "Impressive, Miss Granger. Your dedication and discipline are truly admirable. You really should be proud of yourself." His gaze wanders to the boys, who continue with their tricks. "Excellent performance, boys," he praises. "Your control is getting better with every attempt."
In a heartbeat, Hermione's peaceful exercise is interrupted as a blur of motion flies past her, overriding the laws of speed. Startled, her grip wobbles and she crashes to the unforgiving ground below. Panic races through her whole body until suddenly two arms wrap around her, catching her.
When Hermione got back to her feet, she looked up at her saviour, her eyes wide with fear and gratitude. "Thank you," she murmured, and there was still a hint of shock in her voice. Harry had managed to catch her in time. Her gaze goes up into the sky, hoping to find the culprit, instead, she sees the white blonde boy slow down and fly to the ground. It couldn't have been Malfoy, because he was flying in her direction and not away from her.
"Just stay away, Malfoy." Ron hisses as he notices Malfoy coming towards them. "He hasn't done anything yet, Ron." Says Hermione. "You didn't happen to see who it was?" She asks.
"No, but it was a Slytherin if he's here." His gaze goes to Malfoy at his words. Malfoy didn't say a word and just walked past them but not without giving them a dirty look.
______
That was chapter one. To be honest I didn't know how to start so the start was kind of rocky, I had three different versions for the first chapter and I tried to combine all of them. Anyways, the next chapter will hopefully be a little better.
