Chapter 25 - Dreams and Duplicates

NOTE! I don't own this song at all, I'm just making it canon this is Y/N's most popular song back home. Does she sound like Robin when she sings? Sorta. She's very good at changing her voice and vocal mimicry, so that's not what she truly sounds like when she sings, but she can sing like that. Just feel free to vibe to this banger too :]

Also, I'm editing the timeline of the game a bit. I just think it's a bit awkward that the Unbirthday Party in canon happens at like seven in the morning or on a Saturday or something, but in the story it's Sunday. So I'm simply editing it so the Unbirthday Party occurs after classes and the- ahem, big event for those who don't know- occurs the next day.

------

You open your eyes and realize you're back in the weird place.

The rose garden, just as slightly muted in color as before.

A familar squeak gets your attention, and you see Terapagos sitting on your chest, looking around in confusion.

You carefully scoop them up in your arms and stand up, seeing both you and Pokémon are slightly see-through and shimmery again.

You look around, walking out from the heart-shaped bushes to see if you spot more card soildiers or the girl again. You don't see them, yet you do hear commotion from where you saw them last time.

You round the corner and see the card soldiers- now covered in red paint- bowing to an enraged woman. The blue-dressed girl is also bowing, but is notably less terrified than the soldiers.

The woman wearing a black-and-red dress looks exactly like the Queen of Hearts, except her face is beet-red in rage and she's shaking a bit. She furiously rips a rose-shaped bush out of the ground and waves it over the card soldiers in an examplem paint dripping from the roses.

Damn, she's strong. I mean, you can do that too, but still.

"For painting my roses red, somebody shall lose his head!" She furiously yells out.

The three of clubs shakily stands up, looking absolutely terrified and holding a paintbrush dripping with red paint. "Y- your majesty! If anyone's to blame, it's him!"

He points at a card soldier next to him, who furiously shakes his head no. "Have mercy, your grace! It was the ace!"

"So it was you!" She angrily yells out, glaring at the shaking ace, holding a paint bucket tightly.

"Gah- no! It was the two!" He yells out in panic.

"Then he will pay!" She steps towards the two of clubs.

He immediately hops back. "It was three, I say!"

"Enough of this!" The throws the rose bush over the cards, which lands just in front of you. Your heart skips a beat as you step around the thrown-up bush to keep watching in a strange sense of horror. "Off with all their heads!"

Other card soldiers- notably more armed and wearing helmets that hide their face- stomp out and grab the shaking card soldiers, dragging them away. The Queen laughs as she watches them being dragged to their deaths, and you cover Tera's eyes to keep them from witnessing the scene.

The card soldiers with the helmets start to chant. "A fitting end. Color you can't mend. Everyone knows the roses shouldn't be red."

You take a step back from the scene, feeling horror sinking in your stomach at witnessing this.

"But... they're just roses?" You mumble. "Why doesn't anyone stop her?"

You feel yourself starting to be pulled away from the scene, as you realize the blue-dressed girl is staring at you with wide eyes.

You want to call out for the girl to do anything to stop the Queen, but ripples fill your vision as everything goes black, and you feel dread fill you.

Oh... you poor girl... please don't let the Queen of Hearts hurt you. Please, stop her...

---------

Your eyes snap open as you try sitting up, before realizing you're being held back by something.

No- no! Let go! Not again! No no no-

Nononononononononononononononononononononononononononono-

You hear a squeak, and see Tera on your lap along with a sleepy Poni. You blink slowly, realizing it's just Deuce and Ace's arms are around you.

You're fine... You're okay... everything's okay...

You wheeze in relief and look at the two sleeping boys, realizing you're still on the couch.

Wow, you thought they'd move you into your room. I mean, you don't hate this but still.

You wipe a hand on your face, feeling cold sweat covering your skin.

That wasn't a dream... that was an Arceus-damned nightmare you couldn't do anything to stop.

Those poor card soldiers... they didn't deserve death. You don't understand how you can plant the wrong roses, but no one deserves to die for such a harmless mistake.

You think about how similar the garden looks to Heartslabyul. Then how similar the Queen seems to Riddle...

The Queen of Hearts... for someone so praised by everyone, she's such a terrible person. You can't tell anyone that though. No one would believe you... Outside of your Pokémon, of course.

You slowly pull yourself away, feeling like you just need to stand outside for a moment.

You carry Ogerpon and Tera, sighing a bit as you step onto the porch and just stare out at the field.

"We're gonna pass on training today." You state, mostly to yourself and Ogerpon since Tera is too precious to ever think about fighting. "I think we all need a break..."

"Parunt!" A cheerful voice calls out as Pecharunt glides out of the dorm, happily holding a plate of it's... mochi...

"...is that the brain-washing mochi?" You ask as Ogerpon glowers at Pecharunt. Despite you catching the Loyal Three and Pecharunt and making them apologize to Poni a few thousand times now, she still hates them. You don't blame her whatsoever, she's allowed to still be angry.

Pecharunt looks horrified at the idea and frantically shakes their head no. They absolutely lap up any kindness you show them, and can be incredibly clingy. Like, to the point they tried tying you innocently to your bed when you kept sleepwalking for a month.

"...no thank you, Pecharunt. I appreciate the offer though. Just set it down and you can hang out with us." You say with a faint smile.

That makes them excited, as they set down the plate and glide to be next to you, harmlessly and loosely wrapping one of their chains around your wrist in a hand holding motion.

You let this happen. You aren't sure of their backstory, but you learned they just misunderstood how to make friends and the concept of having free-will.

You sigh a bit as you look out at the sunrise, slowly illuminating the lawn in front of you. You think back to how many sunrises you seen at home, and immediately a sense of missing it strikes you.

You'll go home soon, you're sure of it. You and your Pokémon all will...

You tap your foot as you quietly hum. You know you said you wouldn't sing... but no one's listening. And you like the songs you've written, and this one's just your most popular one.

"Matching pace, sway to the beat. Hands up, embrace who you wanna be."

All three Pokémon look over at you, their eyes widening in excitement at hearing you sing, even without music in the background.

"We're reaching heights unseen now, woah, oh, woah-oh."

You pause and take a breath, tapping your foot against the run-down porch as you focus.

"Feel the fire deep within, you're the key to where my trust begins."

You glance at the front door as you see it open, pausing your singing before you see Chile and Moonstone step out, obviously sensing what you're doing. You smile and continue.

"Join my dream, it's just the right time, woah-oh-oh~."

You pause and Chile steps next to you and sets up their microphone of fire. You two share and grin and sing in sync, you actually singing the words while Chile provides a beautiful harmony that's akin to the music that usually plays with the song.

"Leave it all behind... Get ready now~." You grin and whisper to the other Pokémon there. "Sing along..."

You raise a hand into the air as you continue singing, staring longily up at the sky as you remember all the little details about your friends, your dorm, your world.

You wrote this song so everyone can listen and feel like they can truly belong in the world of Pokémon no matter what. But now here you are, no longer in your home.

You aren't stopping though. This is an opportunity for a new song, you suppose, one you'll write some other day. For now, you must-

"Rise up into my, world~" You sing out, instinctively raising the volume of your voice for anyone to hear if they wanted to listen. "Renew your definition~"

"Woah~ So high, let me show, and hear my declaration~" You raise both hands at the sky, stepping forward off the porch as you just keep singing. "Welcome to my, world~ Renew your definition~"

You started singing, and you better believe you're finishing the song. "Woah~ So high, let me show, and hear my declaration..."

You quiet down as you realize Ace and Deuce are staring at you in shock through the window to the parlor. You internally curse, realizing you just accidentally showed off.

That was not your intention... you just wanted to relax, even slightly, and sing one of your favorite songs.

You give Moonstone a worried glance, and she nods like 'you'll be fine. C'mon, let's get ready for classes today'.

You nod, relaxing a bit. Though the worry doesn't completely disappear, because you get the gut feeling something soon will go terribly wrong,  it you don't know what.

You sigh and shake your head, walking back into the dorm with a nervous grin plastered on your face.

"¡Buenos dias mis dos amigos!" You cheerful call out as you walk into the parlor. "Did you sleep... well? Didn't... see anything outside or..?"

"Uh- no! No we didn't see anything. We just woke up... Right, Deuce?" Ace says with gritted teeth as he looks over at Deuce, who's staring at you with wide eyes and a faint blush.

You internally pray to Arceus that Deuce will go along with this, because if he compliments you and your singing, you're going to scream and tell them that Chile is better than you could ever be.

"Wow, you're pretty good at singing, girlie- EH!?" Deuce flinches back in shock, Ace doing the same, when you start screaming.

"CHILE IS BETTER THAN I COULD EVER BE, I'M GOING TO GO GET READY FOR SCHOOL, BYE!" You quickly run off deeper into the dorm, Pecharunt squeaking and floating after you.

"...Did I say something wrong?" Deuce asks, causing Moonstone and Ace to facepalm.

------

Classes weren't too special, to be honest. Outside of Professor Crewel giving you your new clothes, you figure that the classes would be normal. I mean, you were the only one conscious in Professor Trein's class and were probably an absolute terror in Coach Vargas' class, but that's normal now, you guess.

Now, you and the boys are back in your dorm, quickly finishing up your homework for the day to get prepared for the Unbirthday Party.

"Okay, now try adding the... yep." You nod as you help Deuce figure out how to solve this pretty basic algebra problem, but you can understand him being a bit confused.

"Oh! I see!" Deuce smiles. "Thanks Y/N. I wouldn't have figured this out this soon if you didn't help."

"No issue, dos de espadas." You say, tipping your sun hat down a bit.

Ace rolls his eyes, probably thinking about how you two being cute is complete cringe.

"Oh c'mon!" Grim huffs out from where he sits on the couch, playing Old Maid with Ogerpon and Globes (your Iron Bundle). Seems like he lost again...

All your Pokémon lounge around the dorm doing something or other. Currently, in the foyer, is Moonstone the Umbreon, observing your work on the coffee table; Pecharunt, happily sitting in your lap with an innocent expression; Chile the Skeledirge and Chompers the Garchomp, who are sitting by the old fireplace and chatting; Grace the Milotic, who's peacefully watching as Toto- your Rotom-phone- flies around taking pictures of everyone in the foyer; Sweet Apple the Hydrapple, who's currently intently reading about horses for some reason; Koraidon and Miraidon snuggled up together in the corner and asleep; and Terapagos who's napping on the table. All your other Pokémon are somewhere else in the dorm.

A knock on the door gets all of the humans in the room's attention.

Ace stands up as Deuce looks over at you. "Sounds like you have a visitor."

You tilt your head, watching Ace walk out of the foyer and open the front door. You quirk an eyebrow as Cater bursts in and pushes past Ace and into the parlor.

"Goooood Afteeernoooon~!" He chipperly calls out in a sing-song tone. "Did you all enjoy your sleepover? Did you bond over pillow fights and card games? I couldn't find your little group at lunch, so spill the tea!"

He sits down next to you, grinning. You blink slowly. "Uh... sure?"

Ace rolls his eyes. "You didn't see us because Y/N dragged us to the library so she could read and "build herself a little corner to hang out in", or something like that."

Grim huffs as he apparently loses at Old Maid again. "Aw, c'mon! I get the old maid every time, damn it!"

"Grim, no swearing. There are children in the room." You say, gesturing at Ogerpon and Terapagos.

"Aw, look at everyone!" Cater says, obviously impressed by your Pokémon as he pulls out his phone. "Mind if I just..."

You immediately cover your face as he snaps a picture, pausing as he looks at it. You feel your face twitch with annoyance.

"Cater, you're not taking pictures of me unless I can be certain you'll always blur out or cover my face, or if I'm wearing a mask of some kind." You calmly state, reaching over to pet Moonstone.

Cater raises an eyebrow at you, confused. Though he gets cut off when Toto flies over. "Beep beep! Y/N, I have an announcement! Boop!"

"Oh? Do tell." You say, smiling at the Rotom-Phone.

It twirls a bit in the air and chipperly spits out. "You just reached a million followers!"

Cater looks like he just got flash-banged. "H- huh!? How!?"

"Turns out people like seeing Pokémon! Boop boop!" Toto replies, obviously excited.

"Oh wow, that's neat." You say with a smile, honestly not caring that much. Thankfully, all your content hides your identity fairly well. So unless someone recognizes your Pokémon, you'll be fine.

Cater is staring at you in amazement, Ace looks bored and annoyed he just got shoved out of the way, and Deuce clears his throat. "Isn't the Unbirthday Party soon?"

"Oh right." Cater says, placing a hand to his chin. "You probably should get one of the tarts we made yesterday and go apologize to Riddle. And you should probably go hurry, because after the trouble yesterday, we're a little short handed."

Ace looks suspicious. "What does that mean?"

Cater waves a dismissive hand. "Don't worry. I've totes got it under control. Anyways, off to the party we go!"

------

After grabbing the tart, your group rides Miraidon to the Heartslabyul dorm. Cater had taken several pictures of the confused Paradox Pokémon on the way there.

You are in charge of carrying the tart, and had to bat Grim away several times when he kept trying to eat the tart.

The group walks into and through Heartslabyul, stepping into the garden and towards the main building, and you feel your eyes widen at the scene of the party still being set up. Round tables are set across the lawn, with several black-and-red checkered chairs neatly pushed in around each one, ranging from four seats at a table to eight. On the table, also, there's a lot of foot set up, all of it looking delicious.

Sucks you probably can't stay, since you weren't invited formally and are just here to make Ace apologize to Riddle.

Ace lets out a long sigh. "All right, so I'll just hand over the tart and say I'm sorry, then-"

"Hey, it's about time I got back! Good to see me!" A familar voice calls out, and you look back in shock and see an... identical looking Cater?

You double-take, staring at the Cater (who looks just like the one who came with you guy's here, outside of the outfit being the gym uniform and the Cater you were with wearing the school uniform).

You, Grim, and Moonstone stare to and from each Cater repeatedly, as the school-uniform Cater approaches- what you think is- the clone with a grin. "And me! Looking good as always, me!"

You immediately move and hide behind Deuce, feeling genuine concern and fear at the scene. People cannot clone people, that never ends well. You played 'That's Not my Neighbor', you know how this works.

Deuce and Ace seem even more confused than you are.

"Th- there's two Caters?" Deuce sputters out.

"Are you guys identical twins..?" Ace asks, looking unsure of the question.

The school uniform-wearing Cater laughs. "Nope. I only have older sisters. What I do have is my signature spell, Split Card. It lets me make magic duplicates of myself."

You immediately sigh in relief, worried that someone cloned Cater and were concerned at how casual he was being about that.

"Welcome home, daaarlings~" You flinch as another Cater appears, this one wearing a lab coat for Potions class.

"Good to see you, Y/N." Another Cater says, from just behind you. You blink in shock and look back, seeing a grinning Cater wearing ceremonial robes

The Cater in the gym uniform shakes his head at you guys. "You're late! I was worried sick."

"...we're ten minutes early?" You respond with a raised eyebrow.

Ace looks around in shock at all the Caters around you people, you now hiding between him and Deuce, as Ace looks startled. "There's more of them!?"

"J-S-Y-K, I'm actually the real Cater." Cater in the school uniform says, gesturing at himself with a hand. "Making these duplicates is suuuuper exhausting, so I can't maintain them for long. Anyways, if we're late, heads will roll. And since we're several people short, we'll need your help. But when this is over, I promise I'll take you straight to Riddle."

"Throw in a few dozen horse pictures and two books about them and you have a deal with me." You immediately speak up, smiling as all the Caters nods. It's a little creepy but it's fine. You learned recently in Sweet Apple's interest in horses, so you're going to support him in learning about horses to ensure he doesn't feel alone.

"Wait, more roses!?" Grim exclaims, stunned.

Ace rolls his eyes. "And here we go again..."

The real Cater waves his hands at your group. "Get the lead out, peeps! We need to get started!"
