04 - What's In The Name?
DING! DONG!
Geneva taps her foot constantly, impatiently waiting for the door to open. The box she has in her hands is deceivingly heavier than it looks.
Moments following, the door Clicks! open and Saul smiles at her widely. "Hey Geneva!" He greets and gestures for the journalist to enter his home, "I see you got all the data."
"Yeah, a lot to sift through. There's information overload happening in this cardboard box," She jokes then sets it on the table. Geneva takes her jacket off and looks around Saul's place.
"You've got something nice here," She comments, hands on her hips and smiling, "It's cosy."
"Thanks. A lot of it is from bargain markets and pawn shops," He tells and she nods her head. She spots a vinyl record player that looked like it was made in the 80s and smirked.
"Don't we all live like that?" She says and he chuckles, "So... let's get into it!" Geneva walks over to the box and starts taking all the documents out. In the mean time, Saul fetches two beers from the fridge and opens one up for his colleague.
She thanks him the takes a seat at the table. Saul sits opposite her and quickly goes through what type of documents Geneva has got a hold of.
"These are... Wow! How did you get all this stuff?" Saul asks, impressed at her skill. "Well I have my ways. I might have hacked a place here and there and MAYBE black mailed a few people?" She bits her lip and he raises his eyebrows.
"Huh you're quite the lawyer aren't you?" He chuckles and she runs s hand through her hair. "Whatever I need to do my job, it's everything I have," She responds and shrugs her shoulders.
"Same here..."
After a pause of silence and contemplation over the topic, the two professionals return to their task of finding dirt on their client's opposer.
*****
4 and a half hours later...
"Okay so... to recap," Geneva gathers the papers she had placed as a separate sorted pile and looks at them, "Lionel Riviera is responsible for fraudulent financial and taxation accounts, both avoiding and adjusting to his own personal benefit. There's evidence here of an email exchange with Parker M., not sure what the 'M' is but, that shows indications of schemes to being about advantageous earnings for some shareholders and not others."
Saul nods his head and walks over to Geneva, looking over, "And here there's some sort of purchase from Bridgestone Ltd. which is, when I researched, a stock and shares consultancy company."
Geneva grins a little, "I think that could the in quite well with the whole shareholder scheme. I mean Lionel did want to get out whatever he could and with this professional help, he's achieve complete nd double the amount of return on his investment."
Geneva raises her hand for a high-five and Saul slaps his hand to hers with thrilling feeling running through his veins. He can feel that this case is going to be good, this lawsuit can go in his and his client's favour.
"Saul you're going to... nail this," She comments and smiles softly, "Not that I doubted you before but yeah."
He places a hand on her shoulder and says, "Thanks for all this Gen. I won't let you down." He winks at her and they share moment of a lingering stare.
"I-I should go now, it's way past my bedtime!" She jokes and stands up from her seat. Geneva groans in pain quietly, she's been sitting in that one seat for the past few hours and did not move much around.
"Alright then Mr. Goodman, I'll be seeing you around I hope?" She walks to the door after grabbing her purse and checking it quickly to see if she forgot anything.
"Of course, no doubt about that!"
"Great!" She smiles, "I had fun doing this, I get why you love your job, it's enthralling."
Saul looks to the wooden floor of his apartment with happiness burning on his face-
"What's that noise?" Geneva furrows her eyebrows and looks to the windows, "Wait a minute..." She makes her way to the other side of the living room quickly and pulls open the curtains.
She sighs as Saul walks over to her. "Oh crap," She mutters, sulking as she watches the pitter-patter of rain on the glass. It's raining quite heavily, the outdoors is in no condition for one to travel in.
"If you don't mind waiting it out..."
"I don't think I have a choice, sorry Saul."
"Why are you sorry? It's the bipolar weather like it's the dad from The Shining. One minute it's calm and quiet and the other all hell breaks loose," Saul comments and Geneva laughs at his reference.
He raises his hands in a frightful pose and grins widely with his teeth. "HERE'S RAINY!" He imitates Jack Nicholson's character's voice and Geneva shakes her head with a smile.
"Well it's not that bad. A little rain can't hurt anyone," She takes a seat on the arm rest of the couch and crosses her knees, "The rain's romantic."
Saul rolls his eyes, "Oh you're part of the... 'sappy love note' gang-"
"No way, I'm so far from it! I just... It's peaceful," She looks out of the window again and takes in a deep breath. For a moment Saul watches her with awe.
Saul claps his hands together suddenly, which discreetly startled Geneva. "So what do you want to do?" He asks and she pauses to think.
"Surprise me."
*****
She can hear him breath, the quietness level in the apartment was beyond bearable. They had watched a movie together already, they thought it would be funny to watch The Shining, given the comments they had made before.
But neither Saul nor Geneva had the stamina to watch another movie in one sitting so they found themselves placed idle on the couch, at each end, with a beer bottle in their hands and silence in their minds.
Geneva shifts in her seat, the cushion starting to heat up from the lack of ventilation in-
"James McGill..." Saul mumbles, loud enough for his friend to hear.
"What?"
"Slippin' Jimmy, Jimmy McGill, James... Whatever you want," He took a sip of his drink and sighed.
"I don't get-"
"Do you think that I was always 'Saul Goodman, attorney at law'?" He questions and Geneva squints her eyes.
"You changed your name? So that's where the McGill in HHM is," She comments and Saul smiles at the remembrance of the observation she had made previously.
"Yeah I did. I thought you should know, because we've come to know each other better," He explains, "I feel like I can trust you more than anyone."
"Why did you change your name?" She asks sadly, shock filling up every be in in her body.
"I had to let go of the previous life I had. I wasn't... I didn't..." He frowns, the thought of his past made him feel something hurtful inside, "I lost people, I lost hope and I just needed a fresh start. Jimmy McGill was a lawyer too but Saul Goodman has his identity, he's unique. Jimmy was nothing but a failure-"
"Bullcrap!" Geneva turns to face him and takes the drink from his hands, "I could bet a thousand dollars that you just suffer from a super low self esteem and... 'exaggeration syndrome' and I'd win!"
He scoffs and shakes his head, "You don't know me Geneva, my life's complicated-"
"Probably not as complicated as mine! My life is a living real life nightmare Saul, you can't even imagine!"
"I used to be a con artist, can you believe that? What I said at Cinnabon was true, I earned money that way by selling people things that I could convince them was worth way more than I'd sell it to them for!" Saul exclaims in a rush, "I lost my brother and one of my best friends, I loved her... we grew apart. I lived in the back of a nail salon, my office was my bedspace. I got stuck with clients who didn't really know what the term lawyer meant! How can your life be any worse than mine?!"
"You don't-"
He gets up from his seat on the couch. "And what's the cherry of the LOVELY ice cream scoop of a life I had? My brother didn't give a rat's add about me when I did everything... EVERYTHING for him. He used me, pushed me till I had nothing left!" He yells and shakes his head.
"That's nothing compared to my life-"
"REALLY?"
Geneva stands up with rage as well, "YEAH SAUL! I've done things that have ruined me completely, I've just... I was... I-"
"WHAT?"
She clenched her jaw, "I can't talk about it, I'll literally be finished then and my life would be over!"
Saul looks at her blankly then shoves past her. "Yeah... and your life is worse than mine. It must be, you can't even talk about it," He mumbles and Geneva follows him with anger.
"It's the same with you all huh?! All you lawyers, you're just-"
Saul turns around sharply and glare at her. Geneva shuts her mouth before speaking and he auqunts his eyes. "Say it! What are we lawyers?!" He shouts.
"A group of heartless sons of bitches two don't give a single crap about what feelings are! Do you even know that such a thing exists?!" Geneva storms and Saul stares at her with heartbreak. He knew the words were coming but when they actually did, he felt more hurt than he thought.
"Saul I'm..." Geneva follows him as he walks to the other end of the open kitchen, regretting her outburst of words.
"It's fine."
"No it's-"
"I said that it's alright Geneva-"
She grabs his arm and turns him around, "No it's not Saul. I didn't mean that, I couldn't control my anger which is my fault. You're a close friend of mine, I would never think of you like that."
"Okay..."
"I need to know that you're completely alright."
"I'm... completely alright?"
Geneva pulls him into a hug, wrapping her arms around his neck. Saul chuckles a little surprised at the sudden action.
"And don't think for a moment that I don't know what you're going through or the you feel," She mumbles into his ear, "I know exactly how you feel.
