02 - "Lunch Is On Me"

He taps the menu on the table constantly, he fears that she bailed on him. Saul looks to his wrist watch and reads off the time being only five minutes past the agreed time for-

"I'm so sorry for being late, I hope you didn't have to wait that long," A woman says apologetically. Her voice sounds fresh and bright today, compared to yesterday evening.

Saul turns back, the gets up to greet Geneva. She shakes his hand and smiles then takes a seat in front of him.

"I just got here, no worries," He tells her and runs a hand through his hair. He doesn't usually touch his hair, it's strictly off limits, even for him but right now he's feeling the nerves tingle in his hands.

"So I'll get right into it if it's alright with you?" Geneva asks and Saul nods his head. A quick smile later, she takes out her phone and opens up Evernote. Geneva has all the interview questions sorted out.

"Alright, what inspired you to become a lawyer?" She asks, and places her audio recording device, a gift from a close colleague, close to Saul's side of the table.

"Well I... I sort of followed my brother Charles. He was a lawyer and co-founder of the firm, HHM, Hamlin Hamlin McGill," Saul answers, flashes from his previous life replaying in his mind, "I guess he had faith in me at some point but then after he saw the path I was going on... It all dissolved away."

Saul frowns. Chuck meant everything to him, he was his role model, and he was the one that made everything go south. All that wishful thinking about how his brother care, how he made an effort to guide his sibling and how he, in the end, would take Saul into the firm... Such a waste of energy.

"What happened Saul? Where's your brother now?" Geneva questions further, sort of side-tracking from her list of questions, "Wait, where's the 'Goodman' in HHM?"

Saul smirks, "Wow someone's seriously put the 'investigation' in investigative reporter."

Geneva sits back in her seat and bites her lip, "I'm sorry Saul, I didn't mean to be-"

"Good afternoon, what can I get you both?" A waiter asks them and Geneva smiles. "Um well I'll have what he's having," She answers and looks over to Dual to see what he picks out.

"Pecan and caramel cinnabon please, all time favourite," He tells and looks to Geneva for confirmation, "With water?" She nods her head in agreement.

"Alright, your order will be served shortly," The waiter informs and walks away with the menu.

"You're probably the most polite person I've met," Saul looks down at the menu then smiled, "Being a lawyer I've met bags full of scumbags, appropriately called."

Geneva laughs and looks at her table partner with a smile. She's finally enjoying herself after a long time, She never thought she'd be able to feel emotions like these after what she'd been through.

"If you could choose to have done something else with your life what would you choose?" She asks after regaining her breath. It's not a question on her list though she's curious to know his viewpoint.

Saul smiles softly, "Well I... I don't think I can see myself doing anything else. I love helping people, making their lives less crappier than it could be. The law is a mean kick in the behind and it's got all that drama straight out the wazoo but knowing that I can change a few people's lives, it keeps me happy."

She looks at him with awe, genuinely enjoying her time with him. "That's um... that's a lovely thought Saul," She compliments and continues to eat her meal.

"What about you? Did you always see yourself as a journalist?" Saul asks, taking a a bite from his cinnabon.

Geneva looks up and stares at the view outside, people passing by and cars driving to whatever destination they choose.

"I had a shaky past, I was doing something I wasn't happy with at all. It gave me a thrilling feeling, an adrenaline rush and my friend... His name was uh, Thomas, we both had a good time but," She shakes her head with disappointment, "I don't know, I feel like it was all a waste and even now I don't know if what I'm doing is what I really want."

Saul frowns a little, her words hit close to home. He had felt a little of the same sentiment about his previous life. Was changing it all a good choice for him?

"You know your past doesn't determine your future. There's always um... how do you say it? A chance to spread your wings and fly off into the sunset," He chuckles and Geneva smiles.

"I'd actually quite like that," She comments and takes a sip from her glass of water.

5:48 PM

"I've never tried that flavour, is it sweet?" Saul asks, taking a long drink of his frappuccino, while staring at the ice cream scoop on the waffle cone Geneva held in her hand.

"Not that much but it's extremely cooling. It's ice cream but ignoring that it's still refreshing," She responds, "Have you tried mint chocolate?"

"Nope."

"Well it's not cold but yet the mint gives you this coolness. If you're stressed, just have a piece," She gives a tip and does the 'Ok' hand gesture to compliment it, "Want to try?"

Saul shakes his head, "No I'm good thanks, on another occasion."

They continue to walk for a while in silence, enjoying the soft and slow breeze making them feel a little cold, enough to bear.

"I wish I could relive my life again," Geneva mumbles but doesn't realise that it was loud enough for Saul to hear.

"I doubt that you had such an intense past as you make it seem," Saul comments and she stares at him blankly.

"How would you know?"

Saul stops walking, "Because you don't look like it, at all. I was a... con artist, would you buy that story?"

Geneva squints and Saul grins. "Yeah exactly, that's what I thought," He says and starts walking again.

"Why did you-Oh crap!" Geneva holds her head and sighs loudly, "I completely forgot about the interview! My boss is going to finally find a reason to fire me."

Saul furrows his eyebrows, "What?"

Geneva shakes her head and rolls her eyes, "He's been out to get me ever since I joined. His one level lower, the chief editor, was the one who insisted on taking me. He's sweet but the boss is just such a..."

"Douche bag?"

"YES!"

They laugh and then everything falls silent, awkwardness pursues. "Email me your questions, I'll send you the answers as soon as you get out of my hair," Saul teases and she pushes him playfully.

"Then in that case I'll see you later," Geneva adds and he rolls his eyes. "Hey come on, there's still a few minutes to the parking," Saul says, "We both are going the same way."
