First Day of Classes
(September 01, 1971)
VIVIANE, MYRA, ALTHEA, AURORA, AND DORCAS decided to head towards their Charms classes. They figured they needed to know their way around the large castle and familiarise themselves so they wouldn't get lost. They've found the Charms classroom located in the Charms corridor, on the third floor of the Training Grounds Tower, Classroom 2E. Their Professor wasn't there yet, but they decided to enter the classroom anyway and wait.
It's better to be early than late. The girls have something in common of being punctual, except Dorcas-she said she wants to go back to their dorm and sleep. A few students arrived in groups of Ravenclaws and Slytherins, and the classroom was filled.
Their Professor is a tiny little wizard who had to stand on a pile of books to see over his desk. At the start of their first class, he took the roll call. "Welcome to Charms! I am Professor Filius Flitwick, and I am thrilled to be guiding you along your journey to becoming future Charms Masters." He squeaks out as he looks at each student with a glimmer of excitement in his eyes.
"Year One of Charms presents an overview of the basics of spellcasting. Beginning with essential wizarding laws and touching briefly upon wand lore, we then discuss the components that are present within spells. Along the way, you'll learn of and practise the basic spells that all beginning witches and wizards should know. We'll explore how such basic spells as the Severing Charm, the Levitation Charm, and the Sunlight Charm demonstrate these fundamental aspects of spellcasting." He started the introduction of their class.
With Viviane listening intently-unfortunately, she already has all the notes because of her private tutors, notes that will be useful until 5th year for all of her subjects. She'll have notes for the 6th to 7th year by next year.
Well, she's actually quite grateful that she'll just have to listen and not worry about completing her notes because pretty much all her 1st-year notes are already complete. Her books were already read through, highlighted, tabbed, reviewed, and digested with understanding.
She already has a list of their lessons for her Charms 101:
"You have the prettiest handwriting I have ever seen," Dorcas tells her as she leans beside Viviane-very impressed with her cursives, then looks at her notes, frowning as she looks over her own notes. "Mine's look as if a diricawl pecked my paper with ink on its beak."
Viviane softly giggles, consoling, "It's just I've been practising." Looking back at their Professor-lots of bloody practising, she didn't eat meals for this handwriting and finally had the nod of approval from her Father that her handwriting had met his expectation. Viviane quite liked the compliment. She deserved it. She worked hard to have beautiful penmanship.
Professor Flitwick said that they'll start to spell chanting tomorrow and that they should keep a journal with them during lessons meant to record thoughts and observations during class and while practising the charms Professor Flitwick has presented.
Then they went out of the castle and to the greenhouses to attend Herbology Class. The Professor introduced herself, Professor Pomona Sprout, and roll call before they started.
"Welcome to Herbology 101! I hope you're all as excited to learn about plants as I am to share my knowledge of and passion for them with a fresh crop of students. While I want to dive right in and get our hands dirty, this introductory lesson needs to cover a few important topics first. As you may have guessed, this year is about laying the "groundwork" - please pardon the pun, though you will need to get used to that habit of mine-for your herbological education. In this lesson, we will be discussing just what Herbology is, some of the expectations of this course, and some formal, administrative information we need to get out of the way. We will start looking at plants in earnest in Lesson Five."
"Now, if anyone has any idea what Herbology is about?" Professor Sprout eagerly asks. Viviane whips out her hand amongst other hands. She was the first to raise her hand.
"Yes, Ms. Hawthorne." Professor Sprout called with an encouraging nod, and Viviane recited, "Herbology is the study, along with the use, of magical and non-magical plants. These plants may be for medicinal, protective, educational, or purely decorative purposes."
Professor Sprout releases an impressed sound, smiling, and exclaims happily, "Well explained, Ms. Hawthorne! And because of advanced reading for Herbology. 10 points to Slytherin!"
Viviane grins. Now she's really glad that she has those private tutor sessions if every recitation will give them house points. To hell with people who think of her as a know-it-all. She spent all her life doing five-hour tutor sessions thrice a week, and she'll make sure to use it to her advantage-she studied well for every class even before she went to Hogwarts. It's not her fault that their Fathers didn't hire their own private tutors at home.
"How'd you know that?" Althea asks behind her in a whisper as Professor Sprout continues with their Herbology introduction.
Vivian shrugs, nonchalantly answering short, "I skimmed a bit," Skimmed. Viviane scoffed in her mind. She practically knew everything about every class-well, until 5th year, that is, she remembered everything that she read about every book. She'd written 70-inch essays and answered her private tutor's tests, and all received outstanding remarks.
Skimmed is not the right word for it. But, of course, she needed to stay humble. No one needs to know that she has already studied all of the lessons for their first year. What's the fun in that?
After they finish Herbology, they have a thirty-minute break before their potions class. Viviane decided to head to the library while Myra, Althea, Dorcas, and Aurora decided to head to their dorm and rest for a bit-feeling a bit overwhelmed and tired. They agreed that they'll meet at their potions class which was near their common room, so they weren't worried about getting lost.
Viviane decided to freshen her memory about her potions lessons with her Father-especially the introduction since they had reached quite far with their potions lessons-7th-year level potions, not that much big of a deal, but her Father wanted her to be on top of their class, especially potions.
Imagine the Heiress of The Hawthorne Brewing Potions Company got bested in class and placed second? Oh, the horror. It is not acceptable and far from perfection.
She opened her journal, where all the notes she took during her two-hour Potions sessions were all neatly written. Viviane's quite paranoid that somebody might take her precious journal and decides to place a spell that she'll be the only one to read and open the journal, and if somebody took it, a jinx would be placed-quite a nasty jinx. If she says so herself.
Viviane hears footsteps approaching, so she looks up from her journal, seeing Remus looking at her shyly. "Hey, Viv."
"Hello, Remus!" Viviane enthusiastically exclaims as she closes her journal shut, securing it inside her little bag that has an extension charm.
"We have 10 minutes until Potions. Do you mind having a head start? Might get lost." Remus sheepishly tells her with a wobbly smile, fiddling with his fingers nervously. Viviane looks at the grandfather clock behind him. They have 10 minutes until potions, indeed. Viviane agrees as she stands up from her seat and fixes the chair back to its proper place.
"Where's the boys?" Viviane asked curiously as they exited the library and started heading towards the Grand Moving staircase, walking down, opening the doorway that had a sign, "Potions Corridor."
"They were at the Courtyard when I left them to go to the library too, umm...Do a bit of advance reading for potions." Remus informs her, looking away as they walk the dim, narrow corridor, it is a bit cold, but the dungeons are always cold.
"I did a bit of advanced reading as well!" Refresher. "I love potions," Viviane tells him as they arrive.
Remus wrinkles his face furrowing brows. He responds, "Seems a bit difficult with the right measurements and mixtures and all."
"You just need to be attentive, that's all," Viviane tells him with a grin.
Surprisingly the room was almost full. Their Professor was already there, a portly man with a round face and a bald head, covered with a few patches of white hair, wearing colourful robes adorned with intricate patterns and embellishments, just waiting for other students to arrive.
The classroom looked a bit like their Potions room at the Manor, but their Potions room was fully equipped with ingredients, instruments, and such, unlike their classroom, which only contained textbooks, a cauldron, and basic ingredients.
Her four friends were already there, with a Gryffindor seated beside them-she guesses there was a seating arrangement. They waved at her as she waved back with a smile.
A table has two seats. She was going to ask Remus to sit with her until Sirius dragged her to the back, giving Remus an apologetic look. He dismissed it with a smile, shaking his head, and sat beside a Slytherin-Tiberius Nott, specifically.
"I want to sit at the front!" Viviane complains, and Sirius huffs, reluctantly agreeing as they sit at the front of the class.
"You're bloody excellent at potions, Viv. Can't have anyone else take any chances," Sirius comments as Viviane rolls her eyes, taking out her notebook and charmed quill. Sirius was looking at her, and Viviane huffed, giving him a parchment, quill, and ink.
"Thanks, my brilliant cousin." Sirius grins as he starts to write on his parchment. Their Professor started the roll call, and he was especially delighted when a Hawthorne was present in his class.
"I'm happy to have you here, Ms. Hawthorne." He with a hint of theatricality in his tone, a delighted smile, and an excited glimmer in his eyes.
"I'm happy to be here as well, Professor," Viviane replies with a smile-she can already tell that she's going to be the favourite.
"Welcome to your first year of Potions. I cannot promise that this course will be a walk in the park, but I will do my best to make the content easy to understand and enjoyable for all. My name is Professor Horace Eugene Flaccus Slughorn, but please, call me Horace, no need for formalities when I'm around!" His tone is engaging and, persuasive, jolly. This is going to be much more fun than her Potions sessions with her Father.
Her Father also told her that Professor Slughorn possesses a keen intellect and an extensive understanding of potion-making, and that is a huge compliment coming from her Father-he doesn't give compliments. And said that he was a member of Professor Slughorn's "Slug Club," From 1st to 7th year. He especially reminded her to excel and become part of this Slug Club.
Viviane was writing the lessons that Professor Slughorn had already written on the board when he was discussing classroom safety first, the dress code, proper behaviour, and the like.
When he suddenly called her, "Ms. Hawthorne! Do you mind telling us what a potion is?"
Viviane looked up as Sirius nudged her lightly. Viviane stood up, nodding with a soft smile on her face, "I don't mind, sir. A potion is defined as a magical mixture that combines both magical and mundane ingredients. The term "potion" is rather generic, as it represents any magical combination of ingredients that has been brewed to achieve a certain effect. These effects vary drastically, however, from aiding headaches to increasing energy, causing a part of the body to swell, changing eye colour or appearance, and even providing strong psychological or poisoning effects."
Viviane sat down as Professor beamed at her answer, clapping his hands and commenting with the brightest smile, happily exclaiming, "Brilliant-just brilliant! Ms. Hawthorne already showing potential at potions! I expect great things from you, just like your Father! Ten points to Slytherin!" Viviane nodded with a polite smile-refusing to let her mood sour with what he said, being like her Father, sitting down as she heard a scoff from behind.
She looked behind her shoulder, a few tables at the back, seeing the boy that Sirius almost fought on the train. Viviane raises an eyebrow at him with a quiet message, "Something to say?" But before the oily boy with ungroomed hair could respond, she glares, flipping her hair back towards him as she rolls her eyes.
Viviane hears James snicker behind her. "Quite terrifying, Viv." He comments in a whisper for only Sirius and Viviane to hear. She refrains from a giggle that's coming up her throat. Sirius chuckles.
After her first day of classes. Viviane received an invitation from Professor Slughorn's for his Slug Club.
Author's Note:
-Before we officially start with Viviane's academics at Hogwarts. Expect that Viviane will never fail a class. She will do everything and anything in her power to be outstanding in every academic performance. If none of you can already tell, Viviane can remember everything that she has studied, she has a photographic memory, she's like Spencer Reid but with Blair Waldorf's personality - she's a perfectionist at best, she won't experience failure in her time at Hogwarts she quite literally embodies a perfect honorary student.
Viviane is the classmate you had in High School who aced every class, joined every extracurricular activity, has a high position in the student body government, looks effortless doing all of that shit, and graduated as your class valedictorian, got a job offer after college and has a meaningful, successful, and highly-paid job.
She is THAT girl. So, don't expect her to fail because she won't. Yes, she will be prefect. Yes, she will be a head girl. Yes, she will be the captain and seeker of the Slytherin Quidditch team. Yes, she is top of her class, with Lily only being second ( from first to seventh year ). Yes, she has Outstandings in every exam. Yes, she is a professor's favorite student. Yes, she is a gifted child.
But when it comes to love...let's see about that. Her motivation to do all that? It is always to seek perfection and never be a failure, to live up to the expectations her Father set. To be a true Hawthorne who bested everyone in their batch. Because Viviane had done so much, she wouldn't back down. Like every Hawthorne who did perfectly well in their academics - every Hawthorne who excelled during their time at Hogwarts, they are the perfect model students. They are proud achievers with so many medals and awards in the trophy room at Hogwarts.
This is very realistic, lol, as someone who studies in a rigorous and competitive university where every person in the class is a valedictorian and has a four-page curriculum vitae of their achievements and their positions in High School.
OMG? Is this me using the Asian stereotype of an Asian child who has to do exceptionally well in school? Yes. Lol. As you all know, every kid who grew up in that environment has their own issues.
