"Oh dear brother!" Remus cried out joyfully, if from a successful attempt to inflict pain upon someone, a brilliant date with Janus and Logan or simply because he was happy, Roman didn't know.
Roman thoroughly ignored Remus, crouching further over the book he was trying to read. Quite unsuccessfully he may add. The pages were ripped from his grasp and the book was thrown on the floor. Roman frowned, crossing his arms.
"I was reading that, you know."
Remus simply shrugged as if that book didn't cost half of Roman's monthly wage.
"I found a way to get you to the masquerade tomorrow night!" he grinned
Roman's heart skipped a beat. He had dreamed of this for a long time and for a few years Remus had made it his life's mission to get Roman to experience it for himself. A short bubble of excitement grew in his chest, but it was quickly struck down because this was Remus. The only way he could've found a way was by something illegal or-
"You convinced Janus to help you, didn't you?" Roman said dully. Remus's grin widened, shaking his head. The gears in Roman's head had to work for a while until he found the answer.
"You managed to get Logan?" Roman gasped. His brother nodded fervently.
"Technically Janus helped persuade him, because he is obviously the main piece in smuggling you in." Remus shrugged, picking at his nails.
"You got Logan to help you??" Roman echoed. Remus raised an eyebrow at him.
"Yes, keep up, don't start acting like when you found out we were dating."
Roman gasped, an offended look on his face : "You managed to get two of the smartest people in-" he stopped, trying to approximate a terrain"- probably in the whole kingdom-"
"-definitely in the whole kingdom" Remus mused, licking his lips.
"-to date you! Of course I was shocked!"
Remus chuckled : "And why would that be?"
The other mocked him : "And why would that be? Because you're an idiot that has somehow survived with three braincells in the past 21 years!"
Remus burst out laughing
"You say that as if you haven't nearly burnt down the kitchen while making anything other than sweets."
Roman glared at him : "I despise you"
"Ooh, we're using fancy words now, are we?" Remus cackled. "I'll defenestrate you!"
"You've used that one too many times for me to not ask Logan what it meant."
Remus shrugged : "At least you're getting along with him."
"I'm not apologizing to Janus."
"I know"
They'd had this conversation many times, and both of them had been stubborn regarding their answers. Neither were apologizing, but they would try to be civil for Remus's sake. He had accepted it, of course, this was the best he could get.
"So...?" Remus asked, staring at Roman expectedly
He let out a breath. "Okay."
Remus whooped, clearly delighted. Roman was still hesitant about the whole ordeal, but he couldn't let this chance go. He wasn't sure of he would catch it again.
Plus, it wouldn't be so risky, he was sure the three had managed to find a way to sneak him in as a butler or something similar. It wasn't as if he would be socializing and dancing with nobles and royalty, right?
*
Roman stared at the red mask in disbelief. He shakily brought it to the light, the golden accents twinkling ever so slightly. He lifted his head up to look at the three pairs of eyes watching him intently.
"No. Absolutely not."
Remus gave on over dramatic sigh, draping himself over Logan, who scrunched his nose and pushed him in Janus' direction. This time, his boyfriend didn't mind, letting Remus carry his dramatics.
"You said you wanted to attend the masquerade and we're giving you a chance." Logan stated, crossing his arms.
"But not like this!" Roman exclaimed. "I thought you meant as a butler or something!"
"Look, if you don't want this-" Janus pushed Remus of him, who grumbled, but quickly latched onto Logan again, who, this time, let him stay.
Roman gripped the mask, glaring at Janus. The other returned the favour, his different coloured eyes staring him down. Logan sighed, placing a hand on Janus's shoulder.
"It would not be wise to start this now. It is a discussion of great importance"
"Oh really? What could possibly be so important?" Janus snapped, but his gaze softened slightly, sending a silent apology to Logan. The other gave a tiny smile.
Roman wished he had something like that. The connection the three had was something special, Roman liked to think of it as an unbreakable bond that had been put to trial many times and had not ripped.
"Roman might lose his job!" Remus interjected, flopping on the bed next to his brother.
Roman nodded fervently : "Yeah, exactly!"
"I'm sure Remy and Emile wouldn't mind hiring you at the bakery if you did" Janus shrugged picking at his nails. He yelped at the elbow in his ribs from Logan and sent him a half hearted glare.
"He's worked very hard on getting employed at the palace. I should know" Remus grumbled the last sentence, probably remembering all the nights Roman had stayed up late and damaged his sleeping patterns.
Logan sighed. "Yes, I suppose that is a factor."
He paused for a few seconds, his eyes almost lighting up. "What if I told you there was a way to get you in without risking anything?" There was a proud smile on his lips, as if he had solved the world's greatest mystery.
"Alright."
Logan's smile only widened, as he whispered something in Janus's ear. A sly smirk came to the other's lips.
Roman gulped. What was he getting himself into?
