Chapter 8 - Silverpaw
Β Β Β Β Silverpaw crouched low and creeped slowly through the tunnel, her paw steps sinking slightly in the damp ground.
It has been several moons since the flood and Silverpaw wondered why it was still damp after a full season.
The warrior sized she-cat sprung and landed in front of a rabbit.
The rabbit dashed the opposite direction and the tabby sprinted after it.
It was fast but Silverpaw used the tunnels to her advantage.
She pushed herself off the walls and took off like a shot after the prey.
Soon enough, a dead, skinny rabbit lay limp in her jaws and Silverpaw padded back towards the sleeping burrow, at least that what Moon and her called it.
As she was making her way back, she looked up and noticed the very same tuft of grass on the cave ceiling.
Silverpaw paused, her teal eyes locked on the bit of grass.
She glanced behind her at the long, thick scar on her right shoulder blade that she received from her fall.
The tabby she dropped her prey and bunched up her muscles, still focused on the grass.
Suddenly, she leapt up and high as she could, her legs stronger than they were six moons ago.
Silverpaw's white claws tore out the plant right out and she landed neatly, picked up her rabbit, and continued on.
She glanced back once and smiled when she saw the tuft float down.
Silverpaw padded in to where the tunnels opened up a bit.
She glanced around the sleeping burrow and noticed Moon snoring in her nest on a ledge.
"Mornin' Moon!" the tabby she-cat shouted and the vixen jolted awake.
"Ugh we talked about you waking me up early, Silver..." Moon groaned, shifted in the soft moss.
"Well I have breakfast," the she-cat replied.
"Oo give me," Moon held out her paws eagerly still in her nest.
Silverpaw dropped the hare at her black paws. "Ok come and get it."
"Uggggggh I hate you....." the red fox covered herself in moss.
"Well too bad you're stuck with me!" Silverpaw said in a sing song voice.
Moon grumbled.Β
"Hey guess what I did today?" Silverpaw sat down and tilted her head at Moon.
"Whaaaaaat......" Moon moaned, rolling onto her back.
"Remember that tuft of grass that hung from the ceiling in the damp tunnel," the teal eyed cat said, "Well I finally managed to pull it out of that crack."
"About time!" Moon snorted.
"C'mon why are you being so cranky, Moon?" Silverpaw rolled on her back and gazed into the fox's amber eyes.
"Well I dunno maybe its because you woke me up," the vixen grumbled again.
Silverpaw rolled to her paws and dragged the rabbit over to her friend. "There you go. Maybe you'll be nice now."
"Ok I like you again!" Moon said happily with her mouth full of prey.
The tabby laughed. "I wonder why..."
Moon nudged her the leftovers and while she was eating her breakfast, the fox spoke up.
"Hey I heard something strange yesterday in the western tunnel," Moon tilted her head to the dark hole of the tunnel to the right of them.
"Hm did you recognize it?" the she-cat asked.
"No but it did seem oddly familiar."
"I'm sure it's nothing. I'll check it out later after I take my morning nap!" Silverpaw dashed to the ledge where their nests were and she leapt into hers.
Right before she drifted to sleep, she heard Moon's voice say, "Don't get angry if I wake you up early!" and then she instantly let the comfortable moss drag her into a peaceful sleep.
Β Β Β Silverpaw soon awoke and padded to the entrance of the dark western tunnel.
Moon was sleeping again.
"Ok Moon I'm going to discover the strange, creepy noise you heard in the western tunnel! If I don't come back, tell my story to the rabbits and dirt!" Silverpaw meowed loudly.
The red vixen didn't stir.
Silverpaw rolled her eyes, took a deep breath, and walked into the darkness.
The tabby she always liked to avoid the western tunnel.
It was way too dark. Way too quiet. And way too filthy.
As the warrior-sized she-cat treaded deeper and deeper into the tunnel, she didn't ear anything and was beginning to think Moon made it up so she could get some rest.
Right as she turned to head back, Silverpaw heard it.
Hissssssssssssss
She recognized that sound.
It was the snake.
The noise brought back awful memories Silverpaw wished she could forget.
Lionpaw trying to save her. The fall. The pain. The blood.
Silverpaw spun around trying to find the source of the sound.
Then she saw it.
It was black with a white underbelly and it slithered quickly right in between her black paws.
She yelped and tried slashing it but the snake was hard to see and it disappeared into a small hole in the wall.
"How lovely...a snake," Silverpaw hissed and turned around, watching every paw step for a scaly, unwelcome guest.
