Chapter Five

Megan slipped her hair into a ponytail, picking up the cyber-mask and sticking it onto her neck, pressing a button and watching in the mirror as her face morphed into a different one entirely. There was a knock on her door, which creaked open slowly as Steve walked in.

"You know, you shouldn't be afraid to show your face." He smiled, the wrinkles in his eyes deepening as Megan sighed, sitting down on her bed.

"It's not that I'm afraid of people seeing my face. I'm afraid people are going to fear me or ask me so many questions now that they know I have powers. And because I'm Tony's daughter I'll be bombarded with everyone asking for pictures and shit." Her voice had been altered, and she groaned, clicking the chip so her voice went back to normal.

Steve sighed, walking over to sit down on the bed with her. Megan removed the mask, tears threatening to emerge as she turned to her friend. "Why did you have to leave? I know— I know that you deserved it after all of this but... you left, Bucky and Sam left... Thor left, too..."

Megan sat up as Steve gave her a remorseful look. "I did what I thought was right for me."

"What you thought was right was selfish. And you have never been a selfish person, Steve." The former Avenger frowned at Megan. "Don't you ever regret it? Staying in the 40s?"

Steve pondered the question for a while before looking over at the Iron Man mural. "Sometimes. I do regret leaving you, I really do. But I know you'll get better. And you will still have Bucky. And Sam, Rhodey, Thor and Bruce. And sometimes Clint. You still have Wanda." Megan looked away from Steve and wiped a tear away.

"And you still have Peter. Even if you two aren't together right now. You'll have one another until—"

"The end of the line." Megan finished as Steve smiled, rubbing her shoulder.

"Until the end of the line."

She had debated putting the cyber-mask on, but in the end, people would find out eventually that the new girl was a fake. People always find out the truth.

It didn't matter how hard you tried to keep something a secret. Nothing was ever a secret.

The idea of dropping out was on Megan's mind the entire school day as teachers questioned her with wide grins.

"Can you not ask me so many questions? You never cared about my life until I was famous." Megan spat at Mr. Harris, who frowned at her in disappointment.

"Someone's upset." A kid in the back said with a laugh as Megan slowly turned to him, his face switching from amusement to fear as he saw the Stark's angered expression.

"I'll show you upset, James." Megan threatened as Mr. Harris snapped his fingers.

"Hey! There is no threatening in my class." He shamed as Megan stood up and grabbed her bag, walking out of the class. "Miss Stark!"

"I'm dropping the class. Art sounds way better." She deadpanned, storming off to the detention center, where Michelle Jones was sitting, reading a book.

Her eyes barely flickered over to look at Megan, her interest in the girl not raising or lowering in the slightest. "Hey, Megan." She mumbled, lowering her book to watch the Stark sit down in front of her.

"Are you only interested in me because you know I'm Tony Stark's daughter?" Megan asked as Michelle scoffed.

"I could care less whose daughter you are. Didn't care before I knew, why should I care now?" She smiled as Megan sighed in relief.

"Great. Because it seems like the only three people that didn't really care are you, Ned and... Peter." Megan muttered the last name as MJ sighed. "I just wish no one found out."

MJ shrugged, picking her book back up and kicking her legs onto the desk. "They'll lose interest. They always do."

"You think so?"

"I know so. It's like a funny video. After a while it's just not funny anymore. Same with scary videos. You see it enough times and then you're numb to it." She faked a smile as Megan rested her chin on the chair.

"Thanks, MJ. I guess you're right."

"I'm always right."

Ik Ik it's a short chapter but I literally haven't updating this book in a month bc I lost motivation 💀
