Dawn gaped in horror.
The mother dragon moved off of the RainWing. Her jaws opened and the dead dragon's neck flopped limply onto the ground. Gray began an experimental gnawing on the RainWing's tail, and a realization hit Dawn. She might watch these dragons eat one of her own kind. She should have looked away, but she couldn't look away. It felt like a crime to look away.
The mother let out a soft growl and gently pushed Gray away. Next, Golden pushed her snout partly under one of the dead dragon's wings and lifted it up slightly. The message was clear, can we eat? The mother dragon shook her head. No, you can not eat.ย
Then the mother started out of the clearing. The dragonets let out tiny, incredulous groans, and followed. There were tiny rustles in the undergrowth as the RainWings departed. Dawn hadn't realized that Pomegranate had one wing over her shoulder until she pulled it away.
"Dawn! You good?!"ย
Dawn almost melted into a puddle out of relief when she heard Flutterwing's voice.ย
"Yes," She managed to croak.
Tears began to trickle down her snout, she just couldn't help it. Flutterwing slid into a comforting position beside her. Then, out of nowhere, they both heard a small, tight whisper, "Oh no, oh no, Fig, poor fig..." Flutterwing and Dawn both turned to look at Pomegranate.
She was shaking her head and muttering under her breath.
ย "Not Fig... Poor Fig... She did nothing to deserve this..." Flutterwing awkwardly shifted to pick up a bunch of bananas.ย
Dawn sighed, rubbing her eyes. This day was positively the WORST.
That could have been you, Dawn. You could have been killed. But no, better me than anyone else, no one would miss me, so I should have died. Would Pomegranate be this sad if I died? Probably not. Maybe... No.
Yeah, no one would be this sad, Flutterwing will be like, 'You know, who cares about not emotionallyย stable RainWings,' but then, maybe if I stay away from her too long, she'll think the same thing.
OR, if I'm too clingy she'll think the same thing. Then again, if I act too distant she might hate me for it. Dawn HATED how emotionally trapped she felt sometimes. But you are still here. Happyย thoughts. Only happy thoughts. Totally do not feel like a trapped and abused panda. Happy, still smilingย here.
Dawn looked up. Flutterwing and Pomegranate were moving Fig's body away from a drawn rectangle that had once been around her body. She instantly knew what they were doing. They were digging a grave.
Actually, it was considered a great privilege to have a grave. Most big dragon victims, well, there wasn't anything left to bury; save for a few shards of bone. Dawn almost flinched when she heard her name being called.ย
"Hey, Dawn! Come and look at this!"
Still smiling. Dawn slowly made her way over. With every step she took, her shoulder throbbed, a painful reminder of all that had gone wrong this morning. There was something shiny in Flutterwing's talons. It looked like a small, golden disk with a RainWing carved on one side. Dawn peered curiously at it.
"What is it?" Dawn asked.ย
Her curiosity was getting the better of her, she knew it but didn't make any move to stop it.ย
"I... I don't know." Flutterwing said hesitantly as she turned it over in her talons.ย
Set in the RainWing's eye socket was a tiny piece of what looked like obsidian.
"Where did you find it?" Dawn asked, holding her talon out.ย
Flutterwing placed the piece of gold in her claws.ย
"It... Well, I know this sounds weird, but it was sticking out of Fig's wound. Weird, right?"
"Yeah..." Dawn looked down at the disk. There was just something about the image, and the fact that the big dragon hadn't eaten Fig, that was just plain odd. She felt like she had seen the symbol before, but she couldn't remember where...
"Hey, do you think this is deep enough?" They looked over at Pomegranate, only her head was poking out from the hole she was in.
ย "You think so?" Flutterwing teased.ย
Even Dawn laughed. "Well... I guess..." Pomegranate said as she clambered out of the hole. "We don't want a big dragon digging her up."
"Yeah, yeah whatever." Flutterwing said, "Now help me pick her up."ย
Dawn just watched as Pomegranate and Flutterwing heaved the dead RainWing into the hole. Dawn began to zone them out and she examined the disk again.
Three years ago...
Dawn felt the tears coming down her snout, but she made no effort to wipe them off. Papaya was dead. Her mother was dead. She stood still and listened to the sound of the rain pouring down outside. They were safe. Safe from the big dragon raging outside, from the pouring rain.
But not from their own emotions.
'Dawn,' Flutterwing choked out. Dawn turned to look at her sister. Out of the corner of her eye, in her peripheralย vision, was a flash of light glinting off metal.ย
The disk was barelyย visible, but it was there, on a dragon'sย chest, covered in shadow. Dawn didn't pay any mind to it, and she soon forgot about it.
Present Time...
That's it! I saw it in the tunnel!ย Dawn blinked at the disk, what was it doing in the tunnel?ย
But most importantly, who, or what, was wearing it?ย
