PART ONE
TW: TALKS OF SA. MURDER. MISCARRIAGE. DEATH. GORE AND MORE
Aethena Lannister Velaryon was deemed as a lucky girl. She was married off to both prince Aemond and his older brother prince Aegon. They were many rumors about their marriage and how they came to be as a married couple. Aethena never wanted to marry either of the Targaryen boys, she wanted to marry Jacaerys and Cregan Stark. They had been in love since before either of them knew what love was.
Cregan was the eldest, he was now twenty and two. Jacaerys was twenty and she was ten and eight. She was only ten and two when she married the brothers. Her family fought against but the queen managed to persuade the king to agree. But, it was promised they would not bed her until she was ten and three. When the time did come, both brothers bedded the girl. It was said her screams for help were heard in the halls. The maids and guards simply ignored them, they could do nothing to save her.
A year later came the children. Prince Aethan was named after his mother, princess Aethena and his twin, prince Baelon was named after king Viserys' father. Princess Aethena lost her light little by little. Many ladies at court whispered of her husbands obsession with having her with child every chance they got.
Jacaerys and Cregan did not see her after her wedding the year before. Neither did her grandparents or anyone else in her family for that matter. There was only silence between them. Her family didn't see her for six years. By then, the twins Aethan and Baelon were six. The marriage had welcome four more children after the eldest twins. Princess Visenya and Rhaenys came two years after their brothers, the twins were now four. And their youngest, Maegor and Maelor were nearly two.
Princess Aethena was now on her fourth pregnancy. Princess Aethena despite her situation faked happiness for the ones she loved, her children. Aethena loved her children but looking at her two eldest made her heart ache as there was a part of her that disliked looking at the young boys. Aethan was the spitting image of prince Aegon while his brother Baelon was the spitting image of prince Aemond. They were a painful reminder of the day she lost her innocence. They were a reminder that her life would never be the same. She loved her sons, she did but there was that nagging feeling in the back of her heart and mind about them and how they came to be.
The maesters wrote that pregnancies were never good for her nor were they easy. Some even said it was because the two princes forced themselves on her. It was said by a guard once that prince Aemond once beat his wife nearly to death when she spoke of visiting her mother and father in Casterly Rock and then visiting Driftmark seeing as prince Jacaerys was with his grandsire at the time. It was said the young princess cried for help but they could do nothing. The maid that was assigned to her told the other maids and whoever would listen how her pale body seemed even paler than normal, the purple, yellowish and blue marks in her body were visible.
Others spoke of her third pregnancy before her youngest twins. Princess Aethena was only a few moons, her belly was barely noticeable. Prince Aegon had drank too much. A guard had come in to help her after she had called for help on something. The poor man was cut to pieces as the young princess was made to watch before Aemond and Aegon had the cooks cook the man to feed it to his wife. When the princess refused to eat what the cooks made prince Aegon and his brothers forced her to eat the man's heart, making the princess very ill. Days later she miscarried her child. The babe was born very deformed, the nursemaid said it looked like a dragon. The princess was forced to give birth alone as her husbands would not allow anyone to help her. When Queen Alicent and her father were finally informed it was too late, the babe was lost.
Princess Aethena cried that night. When the help and queen finally came in she was on the floor near the window. She said nothing as she cradled the babe in her arms, singing a lullaby in old Valyrian. She wept for her child, she refused to let anyone help her or to take the child. She threatened to throw herself off the tower window if they did. The queen had guards out the door to keep everyone out including her sons. They would be the main ones who were not allowed in. It was said by princess Helaena that that was the day she gave up her fight against her husbands. She realized she would never escape them, she would spend the rest of her life with them. But, that did not mean she loved them or care for them in anyway, no. She ignored them when she could. She stayed away from them when she could as well. Her children, the king and sometimes Helaena were the only companions she had. Alicent was not her friend nor did she want her to be. She wanted her as far away from her and her children as they could be.
The court had been busy with preparation and gossip about rhaenyra and her family's return. Lord Vaemond was questioning Lucerys' claim to Driftmark. Everyone had gathered in the throne. Princess Aethena has stood in the middle of her husband's. Her belly was round, it seemed she was near her time to give birth. Prince Jacaerys could only look at her, she was as beautiful as the day they last bid their goodbye.
Her family stood on the other side, supporting Rhaenyra of course. All Aethena wanted was to rush to her mother's arms and cry but she was a woman grown now and married too. Her mother would not always be there to save her. She hadn't been there the first time she wouldn't be there now. At least that's what she thought. The trial as she called it because she knew Vaemond Velaryon would die that day. She knew it. Her father and mother kept looking for her eyes to meet theirs. She denied them that.
When Vaemond called Rhaenyra's sons bastards and her a whore she knew it was over for him. Daemon ended up cutting his head off. She didn't react, she had seen Aemond killed someone for staring at her way too long. Aemond pulled her into his arms but she did nothing. She walked away as soon as people were dismissed. Her mother tried to follow her but she lost her before she even got to the door. She did meet them for dinner as king Viserys requested.
King Viserys loved Aethena. She would often take the children to his bedchamber so he could spend time with them. Princess Helaena had become a septa and was no longer in the castle like she used to. It was said that Aethena used to remind the king of his lady mother and his grandmother. He would read to them or in rare times play with the children. The dinner was awkward to say the least. Table was filled with people who could barely stand each other. Everyone had already arrived aside from Aethena. She wore a gold and white dress. She rarely wore green much to her husbands and good mother's dismay.
She sat between her husbands. She smiled at the people to be polite but it was noticeable that she did not want to be there. Her mother wished to speak but her daughter would not look at her in the eyes. The speech from the king began, congratulating his grandsons in their future marriages. "And of course, I would like to toast at my lovely daughter, Aethena. On her pregnancy. My the mother bring forth healthy children like she has before" he said and she raised her cups. "Thank you, father" she said with a genuine smile.
"Princess Aethena" Rhaenyra called. "Yes, princess" Rhaenyra could see it in her eyes. "How far along are you?" she asked. "Nearly nine moons. These little ones will be here sooner than I believe" Rhaenyra looked at her brothers. They were smiling at her. They loved her but their love was harsh and mean. "I hope our children can play together" Rhaenyra said. "My babe is only five moons, nearly six" she smiled. "I shall prey for a healthy child and mother, princess" Rhaenyra nodded with a smile, one that she returned. Rhaenyra and Aethena fell into comfortable conversation, her husbands said nothing as it was the first time in a long time that they had heard her laugh.
The night was going good for the first time. Her mother and father finally found the courage to speak to her. She smiled then, nodded and telling them about her children. "Aethan and Baelon are six now. Visenya and Rhaenys are four. And our youngest Maegor and Maelor are two" she said with a smile. "My husbands and I can barely sleep with the children always running around and having their little escapades" she laughed softly. Aemond grabbed her hand and for the first time she did not flinch. Jacaerys' eyes barely left her. He was afraid to blink, thinking that that she might disappear if he did.
As the night went on, the king retired but the rest remained. Her father had asked her to dance and it was the first time in her life she felt safe for a while. Jacaerys then cut into the dance. Her father let her go so she could dance with them. "All this years and you still look beautiful eh?" he asked and she smiled. "Jacaerys" she whined. "I am simply stating the facts. You are as beautiful as the day we met" she smiled once again. "You are as handsome as the day we said goodbye" he smiled too. Jacaerys was the man she wished was her husband, Cregan too. Her wild wolf she would call him.
"At final tribute" she heard Aemond say. Aegon raised his cup. "To the health of my nephews. Jace, Luke and Joffrey" he said. "Each of them handsome, wise and strong" Rhaenyra looked at Alicent. "Aemond" Aethena said. "Come... let us drain our cups to these strong boys" Jace put himself in front of Aethena. "I dare you to say that again" the Velaryon boy said. "Why? T'was only a compliment" Aemond said. "Do you not think yourself strong?" Aegon asked before Jacaerys punched him making stumble. Aemond pushed him back making fall, taking Aethena down with him.
By the time Aemond realized his mistake it was too late, his wife was already on the floor. Her father and mother rushed over to her. Daemon stood in front of them as did her cousin, Aeron Velaryon. Rhaenys, her mother and Rhaenyra rushed to help her. "This, is over" her father said. "My daughter will not be here any longer. I thought this was the best way to keep this family together but I will not sit her and see how you mistreat her" her father had only heard the rumors, he had never heard them from his daughter but after what he saw tonight he did not need anymore proof.ย But, before anyone could she spoke. "The babe. The babe is coming" they rushed her to her chamber while the queen sent her children elsewhere.
Things are about to get complicated and worse.
