House Targaryen had created great men and women. Some kind and some terrible. It was a coin toss that decided which one would be good or bad. Dyenna Targaryen was no different. She was a wild little thing in her early years. Youngest daughter of the late Queen Aemma Arryn and King Viserys Targaryens younger sister to the named heir Rhaenyra Targaryen.
As the king remarried, Dyenna was sent away to Driftmark to learn under the watchful eye of her aunt Rhaenys and her husband Corlys Velaryon. Dyenna, despite being of royal blood preferred to be simple, she loved to ride her horse near the cliff of the castle, she rode her dragon to Dragonstone to get books or things she often needed. She visited the orphanages three times a week, she helped the wounded and even sailed with lord Corlys every now and then.
Rhaenys did teach her how to be a proper lady and everything that came with it. She saw her family nearly a decade later at the funeral of lady Laena Velaryon. The reunion was cut short as the incident between Laena's daughters, Rhaneyra's sons and Aemond Targaryen took place, causing an even more bigger rift between Alicent and Rhaneyra. Viserys asked her daughter to come home, leaving Rhaenys didn't feel right as she had lost her two children in a span of just days. She choose to stay with her father but would travel to Driftmark to stay for a week before returning to King's Landing.
Princess Dyenna held no resent towards Alicent or her children, in the contrary she tried to befriend and it worked for most except for Aegon. The eldest child of Alicent seemed to despise the girl, he didn't even want to be in the same room as her which was why she often dined in her fathers room. Dyenna took care of her father. Alicent had grown fond of the girl which was why she choose to betroth Aegon to Dyenna. Dyenna was dutiful so her only response was a simple "if it pleases her grace" making Alicent simply smiled and kissed the girl's cheek.
Helaena was grateful yet she pitied the girl for the pain and suffering it would bring her to marry her brother. Aemond thought she would marry him since at the time Aegon was to marry Helaena. Of course, the dream fell as Alicent changed her mind, the king agreed, wanting nothing but peace for his family. Dyenna never changed, yet she did the same things she did in Driftmark. Sooner than anyone expected the people began to call her the Realm's Angel. The Realm's Princess.
Dyenna was the best of house Targaryen while Aegon was the worst of it. She understood why. She knew about Alicent's plan to make him king, she didn't care. Her and Rhaenyra were never close. She tried to reach out more often than not and after a while she stopped trying. When Dyenna was twelve she returned to Driftmark and came back a year later, just in time for her wedding. Dyenna married Aegon when she was only thirteen summers old, and only fourteen when she brought her twins into the world. Baelon and Aemma were born during the beautiful summer time.
King Viserys slowly recovered but he wouldn't go back to be the same of course. Dyenna didn't care. She was glad her children would meet their grandparents. Rhaenys and Corlys were glad she allowed them to see the younglings as much as they wanted and could. The birth of Baelon and Aemma brought them back from the dark whole they had fallen into after the death of their two children. Dyenna changed though, although expected it was as if her light was fainting and fainting.
Her second pregnancy came when she was sixteen. This one, had been quiet hard. She was always tired, her feet were swollen to the point where she could barely walk. Her morning sickness never left, even when she was near her time. Aegon, the man never stood by her side through her pregnancies, the whole nine months he stayed with his whores in a separate room while his wife suffered alone. Aemond Targaryen was the one who was there. Helping her and taking care of her when she was all alone. Helaena and Alicent were there to help too. But, Dyenna felt miserable. She didn't want this, all she wanted was to ride her horse or dragon through Driftmark and the sea beneath it.
The young princess was taking a bath, she was tired. Aemond had walked into her room. "You need to stop sneaking in. Someone might see you and spread false rumors" she said knowing he was there. The young prince smiled. "How do you know it's me?" he asked curiously. "I always know" she replied with a faint smile. "How do you feel today?" he asked as he sat near her. "The same as yesterday" she replied. The way he was with her was the same way her lord father had been with her mother days before her birth sixteen years ago. "Perhaps this time, death will finally take me" she whispered but he heard.
Aemond caressed her cheek. "He doesn't deserve you" he said and she felt the tears rolling down her cheeks. Everyone knew of the harsh treatment she received from her husband. Aemond rememberedย the day he heard her scream as Aegon tried to bed her. The guards could do nothing, it was their duty to protect the royal family, but sadly, they couldn't protect them against each other. "It is done now, Aemond. No matter what, we can't change anything" she told him. "But we can" he said surely. She knew what he meant. Killing Aegon. "I would never ask that of you" she replied. "But you're not asking me. I would do it on my own merit" he told her. She mutter a simply no. He nodded, he stayed holding her hand until she fell asleep.
Despite the way he treated her, Dyenna truly cared for her husband. He was simply broken by the burden of the family, duty and the crown. More often than not, she would find Aegon passed out in the halls, and despite being pregnant she would bring him to his spare room and put him to bed. It was in the those times that he was truly honest with her. "I'm sorry" he said as he began to take off his extra layers of clothing. "For what?" she'd ask. "For being a terrible husband and a terrible man" she would hum and send him to bed. He would hold her hand as she began to walk away. He would ramble until falling asleep. And as soon as she would walk out that door, it was as if the conversation never happened, by the next day, he would go back to being the same Aegon.
One night, after bringing her husband to bed, her labor pains came. She was nowhere near her room. She tried to walk faster but the more she did it the more it hurt. So, she took her time, the pains were unbearable already. Ser Cole who was making his way towards the Queen's room found her. "Princess" he didn't know she starting her labors until he got close. "Princess!" he yelled as he ran towards her. "Criston, please help me" she begged in a whisper. "It hurts!" she cried. He found some guards he ran to her the maester and others to get the queen. Dyenna was in the birthing chamber for three days and two nights. Aemon, Laena and Laenor came on the last day of the twelve month.
Dyenna Targaryen was dying. Rhaenys had been called right after the labor began. The queen who never was stood by her side, she took her hand just like Alicent. Aegon, like the first birth was nowhere in sight. King Viserys, Lord Corlys, Criston and Aemond waited outsides. Aemond was angry at his brother for being cruel and not being there for the birth of his sons and daughter. Alicent came out to share the news. "Two sons and a daughter, my king" she said with a sad smile. "Prince Aemon" she said looking at her husband before looking at Corlys. "Prinice Laenor and princess Laena" Corlys Velaryon felt the tears in his eyes as he saw Rhaneys holding the babes. Helaena brought Baelon to the king as he held Laena and Rhaenys held Laenor.
The moment was cut short by the maesters. Dyenna named her babes but she felt weaker and weaker. She felt into a coma. They did not know if she would survive. When the king heard his heart shatter. His daughter, his sweet girl was in a comma. He gave the babe back to Alicent. The nurses had her cleaned by the time he went in. The room smelt like blood and roses. She was gonna be transferred to her room. Her oldest were lost. Confused. Where was their mother. Rhaenys, Corlys and Helaena were with her, watching over the babes.
Aegon had finally made his presence known. King Viserys never worried about his other children. He loved them but he let Alicent raised them how she saw fit. "Where's Dyenna?" he asked and the table was quiet. Even Otto Hightower pitied the girl. She was good, even he knew that. He told Alicent it was best to marry Aegon to Helaena than to Dyenna. She would've been better for Aemond. "In her chambers" someone had replied. "Didn't she give birth a week ago?" he asked. He hadn't seen her in a week they all thought. He didn't even know if he had sons or daughters. The servants knew nothing.
"She's won't be here for a while. The birth was rather troublesome" his mother replied. "So? Boy or girl?" he asked. "Two boys and a girl" she replied and he smirked. "She's in a comma! And you act as if you did something?!" Aemond slammed his fists into the table. "You're a weak man, Aegon. I don't even know if you deserve the title of a man. You've done nothing but torment her since she married you. I've wondered why mother gave such a kind creature to a monster like you. Now, she's near death and it's all because of you!" Aemond said nothing else before walking away.
It dawned on Aegon that she was dying. As he rushed through the empty halls everything came rushing. All the apologies he gave her, all the things he said were running through his head. Would she forgive him? Would she give him a chance? Would she try to? Would he change? He had so many questions and no answers. He opened the door, Rhaenys, Corlys, and Helaena carried the babes as a servant played with the two oldest. "Papa" one of them said and Aegon felt happy for a second as he thought the abbe spoke to him but as the babe crawled he crawled past him and went straight to Aemond. The babes rarely saw Aegon, in comparison to Aemond who they saw nearly everyday.
Aegon Targaryen was a broken man who didn't know love. Dyenna was a broken girl who had much love to give. She loved Aegon, perhaps not as a lover but she care for him and loved him as a friend and as a brother. But now, she was between life and death. The two babes, Baelon and Aemma did look like him, he couldn't say they were Aemond's and he knew she was too dutiful to cheat on him. Rhaenys glared at him. It had been a week since she gave birth and not once had he come to see the babes or her. He didn't deserve her, he never would. House Targaryen had create great men but also terrible ones. Daemon was one of them but so was Aegon, Daemon had least had the decency to never get Rhea Royce pregnant. Aegon knew he had to change before it becomes too late. Will he become a great men or a terrible one? Only time will tell.
