on christmas morning calum, his mother, and his sister opened their gifts that they got for each other. his sister, mali came into town to spend time with them for christmas.

"wait, there's one more." she said, reading what was on it before giving it to calum. calum had already told her about abien. he knew that it was still there of course but he didn't want to be selfish and open it first.

calum bit his lip and paused before tearing it open. the box wasn't too big and it wasn't too small and he had no idea what it would be. he looked up at mali who encouraged him to go on. he opened the box and inside was a note, a plane ticket, and beats earphones. he felt guilty that she spent too much money on someone she'd never met.

the note read,

i'm sorry if this seems too forward but i've never met a penpal before in person and it would be cool if you were the first cal pal. i also trust that you're not some creep so you better not be or i'd hate you forever. i also got you the earphones for free because my dad works with people that sell them so it was no biggie. don't think that you have to pay me back. hope you like it.
