Chapter 18

"Y/n... Y/n get your lazy ass out of bed."

She grumbled and pulled the covers over her head as soon as she recognized Nat's voice in her ear.

"If you don't get out of here-"

"You'll what?" Nat gave her a cocky smirk. "That hangover won't help with whatever it is you were gonna threaten me with."

Y/n rubbed her hand down her face. "Is that what this godawful feeling is?"

"Looks like you and Cyborg had a lot of fun last night." Nat chuckled, sitting on the edge of
Y/n's bed. "It was fun to witness the crabbiest guy here completely wasted, alongside the most innocent girl.

She smushed her pillow into her face and groaned. "God, what the hell was I thinking."

"I'd like to think of it as a second birthday present." Nat snatched the pillow from Y/n's grasp and swung it into her face.

"Hey!"

"Get outta bed. I need a sparring partner."

"Go find Wanda or Maria." Y/n rolled over to face away.

"Wanda's on a mission, and Maria's always busy with S.H.I.E.L.D stuff." This time Nat threw the pillow, causing Y/n to jolt up.

"Super soldier's don't get hangovers Y/n. I'm not stupid." Nat flashed her a playful smile. "You have no excuse."

Y/n let out a sigh and began physically pushing Nat out the door. "Fine, fine. I'll meet you down in fifteen."

She quickly threw on a grey tank top and leggings and made her way to the gym floor. She stopped at the elevator and smirked to herself, recalling the event of a few weeks ago. Much to her surprise, Steve came rushing in just as the doors were about to close. Y/n stuck her hand out to stop them, giving him time to slide in.

"Mornin' Y/n." He nodded.

She threw him a quick smile. "Morning."

They remained in a comfortable silence, with the only audible sound being the low hum of the elevator.

"So..." Steve began. "You sure had a lot of fun last night."

Y/n raised an eyebrow and let out a laugh. "I'd like to say the same for you. You finally asked her out?"

"Yeah." He scratched his head shyly. "We're going out for dinner, then I might take her to Coney Island to see the sunset."

Y/n shook her head as a grin spread onto her lips. "If that's not the most adorable, old-fashioned thing I've ever heard of.

"I know." He chuckled as a rosy tint crept onto his cheeks.

They eventually made it to the gym, where everyone usually separated and did their own individual training. Y/n made her way to Nat, who was stretching just outside of the ring. She smiled and gestured for Y/n to take a seat on the ground. "Come stretch. I don't want you pulling a muscle."

"Yes mom." Y/n replied mockingly, sitting across from her.

She opened her mouth to speak, before hearing a series of grunts coming from the other side of the room. Y/n turned her head to see Bucky furiously beating away at the punching bag.

"What's going on with him?" She heard Sam question as he bench pressed a few feet away from them.

"I'm guessing the alcohol triggered a nightmare or something." Nat muttered to Y/n. "I think I heard Steve go into his room last night."

Y/n felt her heart throb as she noted the anger and frustration in his eyes. "Oh my god."

"Don't worry about him, he'll be fine Y/n." Nat pulled her arm. "C'mon, let's spar and then we can grab breakfast somewhere afterwards."

"You're paying if I win though, right?" Y/n laughed.

"I dunno, it depends on if you accidentally break something on me." Nat shrugged as she circled the mat. "Then breakfast is on you."

"Steve, I'm fine." Bucky told him, keeping his focus on the bag.

Steve's eyes lingered on Bucky's bleeding knuckles as he continued to nearly knock the bag from the ceiling, which he had done countless times before.

"How bad were they?" Steve questioned calmly, placing a hand on his shoulder.

Bucky stopped and slowly turned halfway, not daring to meet Steve's gaze. "Bad. Look, I don't wanna talk about it anymore alright? It happened."

He stopped Steve from pushing him any further as he walked past him towards the showers. "I'll see you later."

"Yeah..." Steve frowned as he watched his best friend.

Bucky hated constantly worrying Steve. As much as he appreciated having his childhood best friend at his side, having to talk to Steve about something he would never understand wasn't always as helpful as Bucky wished it could be. Sure, the majority of the team had their own trauma, but was he really willing to open up to just anyone?

Before leaving, he took a quick glance over his shoulder, finding that Steve had disappeared to talk to Sam. Instead, Bucky's eyes fell on Y/n, who had been pinned to the ground painfully by Nat, who was laughing from her easy triumph.

"Hey! Just so you know, I was going easy on you!" Y/n pointed as stood up and brushed herself off.

How the hell does she do it?

Bucky quickly looked away and made his way to the change rooms for a cold shower, something he found to be helpful for his stress.

"Too bad Y/n, you owe me a plate of waffles and a coffee." Nat shrugged.

"I didn't want to hurt you Nat. This strength is... hard to understand." Y/n's eyes drifted to her fists.

"You just need to learn how to control it. Until then, I'll keep kicking your ass." Nat grinned, hitting her on the shoulder. "Now c'mon, let's get our workout in so we can finally go eat."

"That definitely hit the spot, I was starving." Nat sighed happily as they entered the Stark Tower.

Y/n hummed in agreement. "I can't wait to finally relax now. No missions, no fighting, nothing."

Nat nodded as she pressed the up button for the elevator. "I would, but I have a certain event to get ready for." She gave Y/n a wink, who was now gaping in excitement. "Holy shit, how could I forget? I'm helping you pick out your outfit as soon as we get upstairs."

Soon they reached the floor of the living quarters, both offering small "hi's" to the few teammates in the kitchen and living room.

Y/n slammed the bedroom door shut and swung Nat's closet door wide open. "Okay what are we feeling tonight? Romantic, sexy, sweet?"

Nat rolled her eyes and chuckled at Y/n's ecstatic smile, who appeared to be just as excited, maybe even more than Nat was about the date.

"What's going on?" They heard Wanda knock from the outside.

Y/n rushed to open the door a let out a sigh of relief, pulling her into a hug. "I'm glad to see you back in one piece. How did the mission go?"

"It went fine, just a few scratches here and there but nothing major." Wanda gave her a small smile. "But there's more important things to worry about." Her and Y/n both slowly turned to Nat grinning stupidly.

Nat looked between the two of them and smirked. "If you two make a huge deal out of this in front of the rest of the team, it's over for you."

"Nat, we've been dying for you and Steve to finally make a move. According to Clint, it was an obvious match from the start." Y/n told her, skimming through Nat's giant closet. "Wanda what do you think of this one?"

Wanda quickly joined Y/n in the closet, helping her pick out a number of different dresses and outfits.

After nearly ten minutes of digging around, they each laid out a few different outfits to choose from.

"Okay, try these on." Y/n instructed, shoving Nat into the bathroom with one of the many selections.

"Hey wait a sec-"

"There's more out here afterwards, we're going through all of them." Y/n told her as she shut the door.

"How many is all?" Nat yelled from the bathroom.

"As many as there needs to be." Wanda replied, sharing an gleeful smile with Y/n.

Y/n couldn't help but be so overly excited for Nat. Her and Steve were meant for each other, Y/n could see it clear as day.

Y/n had never experienced this kind of friendship before either. Wanda and Nat had been almost like having sisters, which she always longed to have.

"Okay, here's another one." Nat slowly opened the door and poked her head out. "I still can't believe I let you two talk me into this."

"C'mon Nat, just show us." Wanda pestered, flicking her hand so that the door swung right open, revealing Nat in a grey dress with a white cardigan.

"Hey!"

"Oooh I like that one." Y/n beamed. "Do you like it?"

"A cardigan, really?" Nat folded her arms. "I didn't think people took me as the cardigan type."

Y/n gestured to Wanda. "She picked it not me."

Wanda opened her mouth to argue, stopping herself when Y/n threw her a look. "Well yeah, I thought she would look nice but also a bit casual."

Y/n narrowed her eyes, staring at Nat for a few seconds.

Nat raised an eyebrow. "What?..."

"Try on the jean jacket instead." Y/n blurted suddenly.

With a simple wave of her hand, Wanda tossed Nat the jacket from the depths of pile of outfits.

"Okay, that's perfect." Y/n smiled and nodded triumphantly. "It's definitely you."

"You think so?"

"We know so." Wanda concluded. "And now, time for jewelry."

After a little while of helping Nat accessorize, Wanda and Y/n walked Nat out into the living space towards the elevator, where Sam, Clint and Pietro all cheered as soon as she entered the room.

"Oh shut up." Nat scoffed, a grin forming on her lips. "It's just a date."

"Don't stay out too late." Sam said jokingly, earning a dead glare from Nat. He shifted back a bit, putting his hands up defensively.

Y/n grabbed Nat's hands in her's, smiling softly. "I'm so happy for you Nat." Nat caught a glimpse of sadness in Y/n's eyes, but it immediately went away.

"Thank you Y/n, you too Wanda." She looked past Y/n's shoulder. "I'll tell you all about it tonight."

"Tomorrow." Y/n corrected her. "There's no curfew Nat. This is your night."

Nat nodded and gave each of them one last 'bye' before the elevator doors closed in front of them.

"Y/n! Wanda! We're playing Monopoly, come join in!" Sam called them over to the living room, where they were setting up the game on the table.

Wanda looked to Y/n and shrugged. "Why not?I have nothing else planned tonight."

They both made their way over and sat around the table.

"Somebody go and get Bucky, we should at least invite that old man over to play." Sam mentioned. Everyone looked around the table to who was willing to risk bothering him.

"ONE-TWO-THREE NOT IT!" Sam blurted.

The rest of them looked around confusedly, before going along with it and declaring 'not it'.

"Not it." Y/n said last, with the team all locking their eyes on her to get up and grab Bucky from his room.

"I swear to god you're all just a bunch of little kids or something." She rolled her eyes, pulling herself off the floor and making her way to Bucky's room.

She walked until she came across his room, the door completely shut. She inched towards it, her hand hovering in front of it hesitantly. She inhaled slowly before knocking lightly.

No answer.

"B-Bucky?"

If it weren't for her altered hearing, she wouldn't have heard the low, "go away" come from the other side.

She clenched her fist, this time more determined. She knocked slightly harder this time.

Without warning, the door flew open in front of her. Bucky's eyes were dark and sunken.

He looked exhausted.

His expression softened when he realized who was knocking. "Oh, Y/n. I'm sorry."

She caught herself staring, stammering awkwardly. "Oh I'm sorry if I'm bothering you. I was just wondering if you wanted to join us, we're playing Monopoly. Just me, Wanda, Clint, Pietro and Sam."

His lips perked into a smile. "Hey, I actually know how to play that."

"Yeah! C'mon, it'll be fun."

He looked back into his bedroom, then glancing to Y/n, who was excitedly bouncing on her heels.

He stepped out into the hallway and shut his door behind him. Y/n let out a happy sigh and led him into the living room.

"Wait, you said Sam was playing too?" He questioned.

Y/n smirked. "He sure is."

"Great..."
