Chapter 14

"Take a break from training Y/n, just for one more day."

Y/n groaned and fell back into her bed. "Steve, I've told you hundreds of times, I'm fine. Just a few bruises here and there. If it weren't for Bucky I would've been burnt to a crisp."

"Well why don't the both of you do something together while we're all busy. Get to know each other or something." Steve suggested.

Y/n folded her arms. "And do what exactly?"

"I don't know. Just stay away from the gym and rest." Steve pointed, before leaving to join the others.

She already knew how the next hour would turn out. Bucky would most likely hibernate in his room alone, playing his favorite song from the forties on loop, or maybe have his nose stuck in another novel, while she hung out alone in the living space.

She threw on a pair of lounge shorts and an old t-shirt. She frowned at the scar visible just under where the shorts ended, tugging them down slightly.

As she made her way down the hall, she could hear a series of curses coming from the living space.

"Need help?" Y/n smirked as she watched Bucky attempt to put on Netflix on the Apple TV.

He took at quick glance at her. "N-no I'm fine." He grumbled.

She chuckled and took a seat next to him. "Why are you in the living space anyway? I mean, you seem to love that flatscreen in your own room more than anything."

"Yeah I know, but since I have the space to myself, I can sit here and grab snacks right from the kitchen whenever I want."

"Well, I had the space to myself." He added.

Y/n frowned. "Well sorry I came to check up on you."

Bucky grabbed her wrist as she began to stand up and leave. "No no, I'm sorry. I was just kidding, stay here with me."

Y/n bit her lip as she held back a grin. "You sure? I don't wanna bother you."

"You're not." He stated firmly.

"Good." She giggled. "Because I was this close to shoving your ass off the couch and taking the TV for myself."

She slapped his side playfully, causing him to let out a pained whimper.

Y/n clapped her hand to her mouth. "Oh my god, what happened? Did I hurt you?"

He violently shook his head. "No! I didn't say anything."

Y/n gave him a look and folded her arms. "Bucky?"

"What?" He asked innocently.

"I thought you told me you didn't get badly injured on the mission."

"And I didn't."

She gestured to his left side above his hip. "Then prove it."

"What? No! I told you, I'm fine Y/n." He leaned away slightly.

"But you were lying."

"Was not!" He scoffed.

She grabbed his T-shirt and lifted it slightly to reveal a ragged burn stretching across his side. "Holy shit Barnes." Her eyes grew with concern. "This is all my fault."

"No it's not Y/n!" He swatted her hand off his shirt. "I'm the one that kept everyone from escaping in time. Because of my own stupid actions, you had to come find me, while risking your life at the same time."

She took a deep breath. "I just... wanted to be useful, for once."

"And you sure as hell were." He locked his eyes with her's, causing her heart to skip a beat.

She ducked her head down shyly and smiled. "Well since Steve put us both on resting orders, why don't we hangout. Get to know each other better."

He raised his eyebrows."Like how?"

"I dunno, maybe play a board game. We could watch a movie."

He chuckled lightly. "Well there is a pretty long list of movies I still haven't seen. I can't brag forever that I got to see the Wizard of Oz when it came out."

"Then it's settled." Y/n switched the Apple TV back on. "We're watching a classic, and I have just the movie."

"Which one?" He watched as a smile tugged on the corners of her mouth.

"Back to the Future!" She exclaimed excitedly.

He squinted at the TV as he read the description of the movie. "Is it because he goes back in time?"

"Yeah! Well also because I loved it when I first saw it. But he goes back into the fifties, not forties." She stammered slightly, realizing this was a stupid idea.

"Oh! Well let's get some snacks." He flashed her a smile. She nodded and followed him into the kitchen, putting on some popcorn and grabbing a bag of sour candy.

They both jumped back onto the couch and got comfortable, already stuffing their faces with the snacks that were meant to last at least half the movie.

"If you don't like it, just let me know. We can stop it whenever. Like, I'm not forcing you to watch it if you don't want to, it's a little cheesy but not as much as most eighties mov-"

"Y/n..." He held back a laugh. "Just play the movie."

"Okay." She breathed out, pressing play.

The two received a message from the team that they had all apparently went out for an outdoor jog, meaning the two were left to enjoy the empty floor alone for longer than expected.

To Y/n's surprise, Bucky seemed to be enjoying the movie. He had sprawled himself out comfortably on the couch, seemingly more relaxed than before.

What seemed to draw him into the film the most was how it reflected the feeling of being in a completely different decade, completely unfamiliar with the society and culture of that era.

Y/n had scooted up to the edge of her seat, her eyes glued to the TV. Bucky couldn't help but grin to himself at her little reactions, it was wholesome to see her so happy, and for real this time.

About halfway through, they'd paused the movie to get a refill on snacks.

"It's just so nostalgic." She smiled, letting out a sigh. "I remember going to see this movie when it first came out in theaters."

"Oh, was it a movie date?" Bucky nudged her gently.

She blushed madly, from both the comment, and the physical touch. "No! It wasn't."

"So with friends?"

She shook her head, walking back to the couch. "N-no. I never had any friends."

Bucky bit his tongue, trying to come up with a save. "Well that doesn't make any sense at all. I mean, c'mon! Who wouldn't wanna be your friend?"

Y/n raised a brow. "Well, do you?"

"What?" He sat down next to her.

"Would you ever be my friend?" She felt her hands grow hot and clammy.

He paused for a moment and ran his hand through his brown locks, before he met her eyes. "I would."

Y/n cracked a grin as she took a sip of her water. "Oh yeah?"

"Sure. But answer me this..."

"Why would you wanna be mine?"

Y/n blinked, her voice unintentionally coming out as a whisper. "I'm sorry?"

"You heard me Y/n, why've you been so nice to me? Ever since you first got here, you've never seen me as the broken soldier or the basket case. I don't get it." He leaned back into the couch, folding his arms.

She twirled a piece of her hair in her fingers. "Because you're neither of those."

He shook his head. "How could you know? I don't think understand."

She bit her lip, lowering her head slightly. "I'm sorry."

"You shouldn't be sorry, I... I'm just trying to comprehend it."

"Well I'm not really much different from you." Y/n thought to herself.

"Look, Bucky. I don't see you as a anything like that. When you introduced yourself to me, you told me your name was Bucky, and nothing more. I've seen you as a normal human being, so you shouldn't let your past define the kind of man you are now." She winced at her cliché choice of words. But it was all true.

She scanned his eyes for any kind of acceptance, but he just matched her gaze "You're... I don't know. Never mind."

She perked an eyebrow. "I'm what?"

"Haven't you noticed that the only person I have a close relationship with on this team is Steve? I would say Sam, but I kinda hate that punk." He said, earning a smile from Y/n at his forties slang.

She leaned in closer and gave his hand a tight squeeze. "Well, now you have me." Before he could reply, she resumed the movie.

"I guess I do."
