Chapter 12
"Y/l/n, status?"
"We're located at the west wing entrance." Y/n spoke into the com on her wrist, Wanda giving her a confirming nod from behind. "Entering now."
"Understood." She heard Steve say at the other end.
"Y'know, you don't have to sound all hoity-toity all the time Cap." Tony barged into the coms. "I mean, professionalism doesn't exactly make it any more fun."
Y/n and Wanda had to stifle a laugh as they could practically hear Steve rolling his eyes.
"Just make sure we don't die Tony." He sighed.
Y/n cleared her throat and switched her focus back onto the task. She held up a 3..2..1 with her fingers to Wanda before kicking the iron door, sending it down with a loud bang.
They were both greeted on the other side by a series of guarding agents. They all jolted and snatched their firearms from their sides.
Before they could shoot, they were surrounded by a red, glowing energy before slamming straight onto the concrete floor.
Y/n smiled Wanda's way as they proceeded further into the facility. Their not-so-subtle entry had caused an eruption of agents flooding their way.
The agents were sloppy at their jobs, but there was a reason.
They were meant to be.
Y/n winced just thinking about her past. These agents were all on their own suicide mission. Their sole purpose was to create a distraction, an obstacle.
She took her frustration out on the incoming agents. Bashing their heads on the hollow, stone bricks, yanking their limbs out of place.
"Do you know where we're going." Wanda picked up her pace to match Y/n's.
"I was hoping you were the one who knew."
Y/n chuckled.
She held up her com to her mouth. "Steve, any luck?"
"I think Romanoff found something. I'll update as soon as we do." She heard him say.
The corridors were eerily familiar. Y/n couldn't help but wonder if it was the halls, or the mission itself that were causing the straining memories to cloud her thoughts.
An occasional agent would appear for either Wanda or Y/n to knock out. It soon became a competition between the two on who could take down the most.
"Aaanndd that's nineteen." Y/n grinned triumphantly.
"I remember when Sam and Rhodey did this on another mission." Wanda told Y/n as they hurried down the corridor. "At first I thought it was a stupid guy thing, but now I see how fun it is."
Y/n scoffed. "They couldn't never do it with class though. I picture them going overboard, especially Sam."
Bang
"That's twenty for me." Wanda laughed behind Y/n.
They continued until they reached a hazardous containment room. Y/n held a hand up to Wanda. "Wait here." She said in a low voice. Anything dangerous wouldn't affect Y/n as quickly as it would Wanda.
She crushed the keypad with her hand and slowly pushed the heavy door with her elbow. She took a whiff of the air, nodding to Wanda when it was clear.
She pushed the door open all the way when they heard a series of voices coming from a door on the other side of the room.
"Do you hear that?" Wanda whispered. Y/n nodded and gestured her to go on ahead.
Wanda frowned. "This one's locked too." She used her own abilities to slowly unlock it, the voices suddenly getting quieter.
Their eyes widened at the sight of about a dozen hostages that were tied up on the floor, rope covering their mouthes. A few of them were scurrying to the corner, away from the two of them.
"не хвилюйтесь, ми тут, щоб вас витягти." "(Don't worry, we're here to get you out.") Y/n set her gun down on the floor when a little boy eyed her carefully.
"You speak Ukrainian too?" Wanda gaped.
"Guess so." Y/n grinned before speaking into her com. "The hostages have been located."
"Nice work Y/l/n, Maximoff. Any casualties?" Steve asked.
Wanda scanned the crowd as Y/n untied everyone. "тут хтось загинув?" "(Did anyone here die?")
A man holding the young boy spoke frantically. "Його сестра-близнюк." "(His twin sister.")
"All I wanted was to take them hunting today, then they took her right from me. She is still alive, I know that she is." He said softly in English.
Y/n's heart grew heavy as she look at the young boy, his eyes tear stained.
"No casualties Steve, however there's a young girl missing. Around the age of nine." She informed him.
Just then, Steve stumbled into the room. "We've got news. A bomb's been placed somewhere in the facility. We gotta get these people out of here as soon as possible."
"Maximoff, help me with the hostages. Y/n, I want you searching for that girl. Nat's dealing with the files."
They both nodded. Y/n turned back to the boy and gave him a reassuring smile before hurrying off.
She hastily bursted into different rooms, each greeting her with disappointment.
"C'mon... where are you..." She muttered to herself.
Her voice echoed off the mildew covered walls as she called out for the little girl, desperate to get her safely out before they were blown to pieces.
She skidded to a halt when she heard a faint whimpering coming from behind a certain point on the stone wall. She pressed her ear against the surface.
"There you are." She chuckled to herself.
She stepped back to study the wall, noticing an outline. She placed both of her hands on the center point, using her strength to push the hidden door open, just wide enough to fit herself through.
Her face fell when she saw her. Right in the middle of the room, the young girl was strapped head to toe on a medical bed.
"мене звати Y/n, Я тут, щоб вивести вас звідси." (My name is Y/n, I'm here to get you out of here)
The girl lifted her head up, hope spreading across her face. Y/n hurried over and ripped apart the leather straps.
"How are you so strong?" The little girl stared at her, fascinated.
"I... do martial arts." Y/n lied, not wanting to give full details. "Now we need to get out of this place as soon as possible. Can you run fast?"
She nodded, following Y/n out of the room.
Y/n held onto her hand tightly as she made her way out of the facility. She spotted Nat and Sam both appear from another hall into the main one.
Nat stopped Y/n when she headed towards them. "Is that his twin sister?" The little girl nodded in response.
"We can't find Barnes." Sam huffed. "He's not responding to any reports on the coms."
"What do mean you can't find him?" Y/n gaped. "He has to be somewhere in here, or outside."
"He isn't back at the jet if that's what you mean. Steve and Wanda said there's not a single sign of him outside." Nat said, a tint of worry in her voice.
Y/n crouched down so she was facing the little girl. "Follow these people, they will take you back to your dad and your brother, okay?"
She gave Y/n a long, sad stare before reluctantly agreeing. Y/n gave a Nat and confirming nod, before turning back the other way.
"Listen Y/l/n." Nat called from down the hall. "Don't you dare get your ass blown up."
Y/n half grinned before disappearing into the depths of the facility once again. Where the hell could he have run off to in this kind of situation.
Her heart began to hammer in her chest when she couldn't find him. Every hall seemed identical the longer she spent searching for him.
"Just keep running, don't stop until you find him." She panted to herself as she sprinted down the halls.
"C'mon... where are you?"
"I won't leave here without you... I refuse."
"Y/n!"
She screamed as a hand latched onto her arm from one of the rooms beside her.
"Shh... it's just me." A familiar voice said in a low whisper.
She let out a shaky breath. "Bucky... goddamnit where've you been?"
He didn't answer her question as he led her into a dark room with rows of shelves.
"They're collecting info on me." He told her, leaning over a table covered with files.
Y/n glanced around nervously, but approached the table, willing to help him. "Steve will kill you if he finds out what you're doing. He's waiting for us."
"That's why he doesn't need to find out." Bucky turned to Y/n. The look he gave her confirmed that he was dead serious.
She let out an exasperated sigh. "Fine, grab them and let's go."
She headed for the door, slowing down when he didn't follow. "Let's go! What are you waiting for?"
He was visibly sweating, but the files had clearly done a number on him. What information could they possibly be storing about him?
She sped-walked back to the table. Bucky watched as she snatched up half of the pile, motioning him to grab the rest.
"I don't know how much we can save, but I think saving ourselves should be the priority right now, don't you think?" She said, not making eye contact with him, putting in the effort to get out of the building as quickly as possible.
"Right... god I'm so fucking stupid." He muttered to himself, grabbing the last of the files and stuffing them into his jacket.
They both stepped back into the hallway. Y/n looked both directions to figure out the closest exit.
"I think there's a door to the roof that way." She pointed.
They sprinted down the lengthy corridor. Y/n felt as though everything was in slow motion, the lingering doubt of "What if there isn't a door this way?"
"Nat... can you hear me?" Y/n panted as she hollered into the com.
"Y/n? Did you find Barnes?" She heard Nat, the murmurs of the other teammates in the background.
"Yeah! Can you find an exit nearby our location?"
"No good. The navigations been cut off completely." Nat let out a sigh in frustration. "Y/n you have to get the hell out of there now."
"I'm aware!" She responded, Bucky following close behind her.
They both skidded to a halt when they felt a rumble coming from behind them. They spun around to see orange, hot flames engulfing the corridor, an explosion following it.
Bucky watched as Y/n's eyes flooded with terror.
"The window!" He pointed to a grime covered window a few feet away. Before she could even look, he wrapped his arm around her, bolting straight for the window.
"Buck- JESUS CHRIST!" She squeezed her eyes shut as he shattered the window with his metal arm, narrowly missing the flames from the explosion.
"Hold on!" He told her, as gravity pulled them down.
