Chapter 3 - Who and Where

Winter Soldier's POV

The next morning

I hadn't gotten much sleep after waking up last night. My nightmare had become more intense than usual, leaving me wide awake with only the ceiling to keep me company.

The girl in the next cell had been up for a while too, but after an hour or so, I checked on her to see her curled up on the floor asleep, the black mark under her eye fading already.

I stood up and stretched out the soreness that came with sleeping on the hard floor. I bounced back and forth on the idea of if I should check on the girl or not. Eventually I look through to see her sitting in the corner of her cell.

"You got a mission today?" She asked groggily. I nodded.

"Somewhere in Spain, Madrid maybe."

She looked at the ground, tracing a circle with the dust that coated it.

"Do I... seem familiar to you in any way? It sounds odd so you don't hav-"

"You do" I cut her off.

She looked at me, surprised at my answer.

"I've seen you somewhere too." Maybe it wasn't just a mission where we'd seen each other before. She looked around the same age as me, maybe she'd been serving HYDRA for as long as I have.

"Winter Soldier, come along." A HYDRA soldier tapped at the bars to alert me. I stood up and he slid open the door.

I glance back at the girl, who gave a hint of a smile on her face.

Winter Shadow's POV

Although I was a Winter Solider like every other soldier here in HYDRA, they dubbed me as the Winter Shadow, although I'm not so sure why. I'd overhear some of the newer scientists and guards say something about me being faster and more agile than the other soldiers. A presence that is barely there, hidden in darkness and obscurity.

I had been trained for every possible situation that one could come across during a mission. I was one of their best. I've had to train many of the new recruits that would come in, all who would end up battered and bruised by the end of their training. This caused many of them to fear or loathe sessions with me.

I don't take their opinions to heart at any matter, however coming off as weak and frail was the last thing I wanted anybody to perceive me as.

"Shadow, come with us. You are being prepared for your next task." A guard opened my cell door and I'm led down into the prep room.

As soon as I entered, I snatched my favorite weapon, a small dagger. It was easily coverable on the side of my leg with a specially built in pocket, and had a taser feature on it, perfect for a quick kill.

I suited up in the usual tight black and dark grey attire. I put my hair up and secured it tightly to make sure it wasn't in the way during my mission.

"Shadow, you will be gone for much longer than your usual mission, take these clothes to disguise yourself as a normal citizen." A soldier informed me. I knew not to ask questions about what and where the mission was. I continued getting ready.

"No no, pack all of that, you are going to need the disguise right away."

Was he serious? Wasting time was not on the agenda. I kept my dagger with me, along with some grenades, and packed up everything else.

All of my weapons and my suit were stuffed into a backpack. My disguise was casual enough, a burgundy hoodie with ripped, black jeans and some grey running shoes. I was skeptical about my outfit, how someone could easily point out what I was wearing if they saw me during the mission, but I trusted myself not to get caught.

I was led to a jet that would take me to wherever my mission was. I almost tripped when I saw the same man who was in the cell next to mine standing in front of the jet. He hadn't noticed me yet as he was checking his bag to make sure he had everything he needed.

"Shadow, this is one of our best Winter Soldiers. You two will be completing this mission together." His eyes widened when he saw me, but reached out his flesh hand to be shaken by mine. His grasp was firm but warm.

We boarded the jet and took off not long after. The ride had been silent, as he and a few other soldiers were scattered around the plane. He sat directly across from me.

If I was going on the same mission that he was talking about last night, that meant we were going to Spain somewhere.

His disguise was casual like mine. He had a grey and brown jacket unzipped with a red shirt underneath. He also wore a black baseball cap to conceal his identity, which I'd have to do with tinted sunglasses and a different hairstyle.

I realized this and took the hair ties out to let my hair loose. I noticed him fiddling with some black gloves, probably to conceal his metal hand and any finger prints left behind, something I'd also need. I shook my head as I rummaged through my bag to find my sunglasses and gloves. I was successful in finding the glasses, but I couldn't find any black gloves.

"I have an extra pair." He said, noticing my struggling.

I nodded in thanks as he handed me the extra pair of black gloves, though they were about three sizes too big. How could I be so stupid to forget something so important. If anything, I could've bought myself some once we got there, but for the Winter Soldier, he needed them on once we got out into public.

I wonder, how did he lose his arm?

Author's note

Hope this chapter was a better than the first two length wise. The story will somewhat connect with the events of the MCU, but I will be adding a few changes to mold together the story and y/n's character. See you soon!
