Chapter 28 - Break Out

Winter Shadow's POV

I heard his footsteps. He was heading up to the main level out of this basement. I finished off the last agent and made my own way up where he was fighting various enemy agents.

A man with some kind of electronic, metal glove of some sort aimed for him from behind. I quickly lunge towards him and strike him to the side. He aimed for me once again and just narrowly grazed my shoulder as I ducked under his arm and delivered a blow to his head, which he swiftly caught with his other hand.

He went for my hand to grab ahold of my gun, before I jammed my finger on the trigger. The bullet only managed to skim the edges of his glasses. The cocky smirk he gave me only agitated me more as I threw him into a nearby table.

The other Winter Soldier was busy fighting with some blonde girl, who despite putting up a decent fight, was thrown to the side in an instant.

My attention snapped back to myself when a red haired woman came charging my way, sending me into the wall with a forceful kick.

She kept her eyes on mine, as if she was searching for something in them. I had no time for whatever she was trying to achieve, I needed to complete the given task.

She swung herself up onto my shoulders and flipped me towards the concrete floor. I dug my fingers into the ground as I skidded to a halt, throwing my leg to her ankle and taking her down as well. I sprung up and grabbed her by the throat, throwing her down into a table.

"You could at least recognize me." She strained.

She reached to grab my hand before I'm shoved into the gravel by another enemy. He eyed my position and dove towards me, swinging for my head. I caught his fist in my own and pushed him back with my leg. He managed to hold me back for a good thirty seconds, but I needed to end this and catch up with the other soldier. I threw him down into the pavement and hurried up the staircase.

About halfway up, the man had somehow made it one floor above me. He leaped off the railing and sent us both tumbling down the stairs. If I couldn't shake this guy off, I'll fail my mission. I can't let that happen.

He went in for the first hit and swung for my head, countering with a kick which I managed to dodge. I returned the same offense, to which he ducked and grabbed ahold of my arm, writhing it behind my back. I snap my head back into his, and break free from his grasp. I'll admit, I underestimated his speed and skill, because before I knew it, I was thrown over the railing.

I catch myself on a small ledge and duck underneath a small opening. The man jumped back down to the first level, puzzled from my disappearance.

After sneaking my way through the facility undetected, I find an empty stairwell and make my way to the roof, where the soldier was entering a helicopter on the landing sight.

He soon spotted me and waited for me to climb in. I yanked the lock off with ease and join him in the passengers seat. As he began to turn the switches on for takeoff, I notice another individual reach us on the roof, the blonde man from earlier.

"Over there." I mutter. The soldier followed my gaze to where the man stood watching us slowly lift off the ground. He hurriedly made his way to the landing platform and leaped to grasp onto the legs of the helicopter. We watched as he used his weight to keep the helicopter from lifting any higher.

I turn to my partner. "What should we do Soldier."

No response. He turned the knobs in attempt to brush this guy off. As he reached the end of the platform, he used his feet to keep himself on the ground, but to no avail. Once he had been pulled off the edge, he let go of one of his hands and grabbed the metal railing, straining to keep the helicopter from ascending. I gaped as the helicopter began inching back towards the platform.

Suddenly, my body jerked into the soldier's as he drove the helicopter straight into the platform. The blonde quickly dove to avoid the chopper, avoiding the still revolving blades.

I dropped my arm that had been shielding my face. The two of us exchanged a glance, making sure neither of us had been killed. I peer out the window to see the man shakily stand up and approach us. He must've not been able to see us through the window because he moved around to try and see if we were still inside. As soon as his shadow came close enough, I punch out the glass and grab ahold of his throat, tightening my grip.

"Wait." I heard the soldier grunt behind me.

I ignored him, focusing on eliminating the enemy. That is what we were told, take out anyone in the way, anyone who is seen as an enemy.

It was only then that I had noticed the blonde had been pushing the helicopter off the edge, even with my hand wrapped around his throat.

"Y/n!!"

That name.

I whip my head around to the voice behind, failing to acknowledge the sudden pull of gravity. "What did you just call m-"

1937

"Bucky you've been reading that nerdy book of yours all day." Y/n scowled, taking a bite of her apple. "This picnic was planned so the three of us could hangout together."

"First of all." Bucky looked up. "The Hobbit isn't nerdy. Everyone is reading it right now. And secondly... you're right, I'm sorry."

Steve laughed and nudged him. "She's definitely right. Plus, who would wanna waste such a nice day."

Y/n hummed in agreement, laying back into the soft grass. "I wish I didn't have to work later today. I could stay here all day."

Bucky frowned, tossing the novel to the side "That's a shame, I was hoping we could stay to watch the sunset."

"God you're so cheesy sometimes." Steve smirked, earning a nudge back from Bucky.

"Keep it down will ya?" Y/n sighed. "I'm trying to enjoy the sunshine in peace."

Bucky scooted next to her and laid down, soon joined by Steve. He gazed up at the puffy white clouds drifting above their heads, watching as they slowly strayed off out of his frame of vision. He turned his head, watching as Y/n peacefully dozed in the late spring warmth. Her hair fanned around her, with rays of sunlight hitting her face, perfectly defining her beautiful features that turned his pride to mush. How could someone look so beautiful, so effortlessly.

He returned his gaze to the sky, observing the clouds.

"Hey Y/n." He poked her gently. "Hey Y/n, hey Y/n, hey Y-"

"What??" She shot up.

Bucky pulled her back down on the ground next to him and pointed above them. "That cloud, it kinda looks like a cat."

"Oh yeah? I don't see it." She frowned.

He let out a laugh. "Look harder."

She squinted and watched it carefully. "I mean, maybe a little. I can make out the ears."

"Look, there's the tail." He traced with his finger. "And there's the two ears, and those are the legs!"

"Hmm... nope." She let her eyes flutter closed again. "I like dogs better anyways."

Bucky elbowed her. "Hey c'mon it's your turn. You gotta find a cloud now."

She sighed and opened her eyes again, scanning the azure sky.

"Oh hey, that one kinda looks like a train." She pointed.

"Where?"

"Over there." She took his hand in hers and directed it in the direction of the cloud she was talking about. His heart skipped a beat at her warm touch.

"Oh, hey you're right!" He beamed.

"Look, there's even steam coming from the top." She noted, pointing to the cloud above it that looked like steam emitting from the front of the train.

Her smile faded slightly as they fell into silence."If only I could stay here."

"I know if I were to tell you to, you wouldn't listen either way." Bucky chuckled lightly.

"How else am I supposed to make money." She shrugged. "I have rent to pay, and I don't even make that much to begin with."

"Well my ma's making dinner tonight, so I'll come over after your shift is over and drop off some food, okay?"

Y/n turned to Bucky and shook her head. "No you really don't have to, I'll be fine."

"Y/n I insist, it's the least I can do." Bucky said, a smile dancing on his perfect lips.

"T-thank you Buck. I really appreciate it."

She was only half glad that Steve had fallen asleep, otherwise he definitely would've noted Y/n's red tainted face.

"You know that I'll always be here for you, for whatever it is you need. The three of us, we're like a family."

She giggled softly. "I don't know what I would do if you weren't."

"It doesn't matter, I'll be with you in some way, shape or form." He grinned, turning back to the clouds. "Even in my next life or something, I'll make sure you're not alone."

Y/n let out a laugh and closed her eyes again. "Steve was right."

"About what?"

"You can be pretty cheesy sometimes."
