Chapter 15 - Mind Games

I glare at her. "The hell are you talking about?"

I aim a kick for her temple, which she stops with her forearm.

"You don't remember a damn thing do you?" She said in disbelief.

"I remember one thing." I begin. "That you are my mission!" I lunge myself at her in frustration. I had no idea what she was talking about, but she looked so goddamn familiar. Like something in my brain was itching to escape, but was far too deep and entrenched in my mind.

Despite my reveal, she didn't hold back. Every second that passed, my head only started throbbing more. I couldn't let myself get so distracted like this, it's embarrassing.

She used my kick as leverage and sprung herself onto my shoulders. Using some kind of wire, she started choking me.

"How are you still alive?" She said through gritted teeth.

I didn't answer as I threw her forward off of me, rubbing my sore neck.

She grew more and more agitated. She was expecting something from me that I couldn't give her.

"Don't do this, this isn't you." She panted.

I grab a hold of a broken car door and lunge it her way. She quickly jumps to avoid it.

"You were there that day, you were yourself, do you not remember?"

I kick her to the ground and pin her down.

"What about Bucky?" She said insistingly.

A sharp pain flashed in my head. I hiss in pain, squeezing my eyes shut.

She took the opportunity to knock me out cold with a stomp to my head with her shoe. She winced as she touched the fresh wound visible on her shoulder that bled right through her black leather jacket. The last thing I heard as I blacked out was. "I can't kill you, not after what you did for me."

Who was she, who was this red haired woman.

Winter Soldier's POV

"Bucky?" The sandy haired man gazed at me, a look of bewilderment evident across his face.

"Who the hell is Bucky?" I said before aiming my gun at him.

Before I could even place my finger on the trigger, the darker skinned man who was in the car earlier flew by with a pair of mechanical wings and knocked me to the ground in time.

This blonde man, I knew him. I couldn't quite
pinpoint it. I stumble back to my feet and eye him.

"No." I blinked. "Focus."

I attempt to shoot him again. Only this time a grenade came darting my way.

The red haired woman was leaning against a car, clearly injured, but using the last bit of her strength to eliminate me.

Something must've happened to Winter Shadow, she was supposed to take care of her.

The S.T.R.I.K.E squad came in and surrounded all three of them, leaving me to stand aside and watch them all get arrested on the spot.

I notice the blonde man looking at the ground with the same shocked face he had when he saw me. He must have seen me before too. He didn't even notice his arms being restrained behind him. I was on his mind.

I had to forget about that for now. Winter Shadow was on the ground unconscious. I'd imagine she put on a hell of a fight earlier, because that red haired woman was knocked up pretty badly.

I shake her roughly. "Wake up, we're clearing out now."

Her eyes flutter open. She shoved me off of her, alerting that she was awake.

"Right." She cleared her throat and followed back to the truck.

Back at the HYDRA base

We were left alone in the lab for a few minutes while the scientists and S.T.R.I.K.E team all discussed something just outside.

"Did you see the blonde man." I asked her.

"I didn't get a good look at his face, why?"

"I've seen him somewhere, I know it." I conclude.

"When I was fighting that redhead, something switched inside my head too, I recognized her." She recounted. "Maybe if I saw the blonde I'd remember him from somewhere too."

"Does that mean we're connected somehow?" I question.

"She said a name.. it wa-"

Before she could finish, the others came in, cutting our conversation short.

A scientist began zapping and repairing the damaged wires in my metal arm.

I stare at the wall blankly. My mind and my thoughts grew foggy and unclear. Memories suddenly flashed through my head, ones that I'd seen before.

An old, European man hovered in front of my face. "Sergeant Barnes." He said.

A long train heading down a high and narrow bridge above an icy river in a snowy terrain.

Me, I think, falling off the train into the icy river. The blonde man calling out to me. "Bucky no!" He wailed.

A girl, falling just above me, reaching out desperately to grab my hand, even though we were already as good as dead.

My half unconscious body being dragged across the snow, my left arm completely gone. "The procedure has already started." Someone spoke.

The girl again, being pulled lifelessly out of the river. "Y/n... are.. you..." I croaked before blacking out.

Me sitting in a lab, the remnants of my arm being sawed off.

"You are to be, the new fist of HYDRA." The same European man told me.

A metal arm in the place of my real one, grabbing a scientist by the neck, slowing draining the life from him.

"Put them on ice.." They ordered.

I jolt back into awareness and knock the scientist into a wall.

The surrounding soldiers frantically aimed their guns at us. Winter Shadow was gazing at the ground, confusion consuming her after whatever she had seen. Those people we were ordered to kill knew us, but how did we know them?

Voices could be heard in the distance coming our way. "Sir, they're unstable. Erratic." Said one of the guards.

Alexander Pierce walked in, gesturing for the soldiers to hold their fires.

"Mission report." He said.

We said nothing. There was too much on our minds to comprehend what was reality and what wasn't.

"Mission report now." He demanded.

We remained silent. He slapped me impatiently. I didn't feel it.

I furrow my eyebrows. "The man on the bridge... who was he?"

Winter Shadow looked up eagerly.

He held my gaze before answering. "You met him earlier this week on another assignment."

"And the woman." Shadow cut in. "Please, who was she?"

This time he ignored the question.

"I knew her.. and he knew the man as well." She insisted.

Pierce grabbed a stool and sat down to our level.

"Your guy's work, it's been a gift to mankind." He stated. "You've shaped the century, and I need you both to do it one more time."

"Society is at a tipping point between order, and chaos, tomorrow morning we're gonna give it a push."

We both glance at each other.

"If you two can't do your parts, I can't do mine. And HYDRA can't give the world the freedom it deserves." He protested.

"But I knew him.." I said.

Pierce sighed disappointingly before standing up. "Prep them." He ordered.

A scientist shot him a confused glance. "Sir.. they've been out of cryo for too long."

"Then wipe them and start over." He ordered.

They shoved us back into the chair and stuck the mouthpiece in our mouths to muffle the endless screams that came with the wiping.

We hadn't started yet, but Winter Shadow already had tears welling up in her eyes. I know why, she felt the same as I did. We wouldn't remember those two people. Not anymore, not ever.

I'm not sure why, my real arm moved on it's own. Before I could stop myself, my hand had grabbed a hold of Winter Shadow's. This seemed to comfort her, and she returned the grasp and held on to it tightly. It soothed me too, like we were meant to be holding hands like this forever.

If only it could numb the unbearable pain we would be feeling in a matter a seconds.
