Chapter 14 - Double Target

Winter Soldier's POV

I was able to track down Fury and his current whereabouts after he escaped. He was sitting down in an apartment, which didn't seem to be his own. He was also injured, badly. Blood dripped down his forehead from the multiple cuts and gashes he'd suffered. I watched him from the roof of the next building with my gun in hand and ready.

I was too far to hear or see what was fully going on. I should've placed a mic on him beforehand.

He was apparently talking to someone. I lean over to try and catch a glimpse of who it was, however I was unsuccessful.

I reload my gun and aimed straight for his skull. He then abruptly stood up, still seemingly unaware of my presence.

Finally, as he stood still, I slammed my finger on the trigger. In the blink of an eye, he was on the ground.

I began leaving, when the a man in the apartment looked out the window and straight at me. I bolted for it. He leapt right across the two buildings, smashing a window with his entire body as he chased after me.

He caught up to me on the roof, and flung his shield right at me. Without difficulty, I caught it in my hand. It was odd, it felt familiar in my grasp. It was unexpectedly heavy as well, made of a metal far stronger than any I'd ever felt before.

I hurled the shield right back at him, knocking him off balance slightly. Before he had a chance to react, I was gone.

Fury was dead, and my mission was complete.

Time skip

About a day had passed. The newspapers and television had broadcasted the death of Nick Fury everywhere, with the story of him being shot down in an apartment by an unknown vigilante.

As I trained with Winter Shadow, a man walked in with a smile wide on his face.

"Very well done soldier." He reaches out to shake my hand. I rejected his handshake.

"Right then." He cleared his throat. "I believe I forgot to introduce myself, the name's Alexander Pierce, I was the one to assign this mission to you."

He was a middle aged man, American, and judging by his suit and his watch, he must be quite wealthy.

I turn away and continue training with Winter Shadow. She gave him a stern look before getting back to what she was doing.

Another soldier advised that he leave us be for now and that we were busy. They both walked off to the side to discuss something seemingly important. I couldn't help but overhear it all.

"Rogers, he won't give in that bastard." Pierce said lowly to a man I didn't recognize.

"Sir we plan to take him out as soon as possible, along with that snarky Black Widow." The man said.

"Find... them." Pierce said through his teeth.

"Right."

Winter Shadow's POV

He had yet to notice us. Both me and the Winter Soldier sat side by side at Alexander Pierce's dining table in the dark. He had just arrived home, and had his back turned to us as he grabbed something from his cupboard.

Finally, he turned at looked at us wide eyed, unsure of how we got into his house without his maid detecting us.

"I'm going to go Mr Pierce. You need anything before I leave?" His maid yelled from the mud room.

"Uh no, that's fine, Renata you can go home." He told her, not taking his eyes off of us.

She said goodnight and left the three of us alone.

"Want some milk?" He raised the carton.

We didn't respond.

He continued on pouring himself a glass.

"The time table has moved. Our window is limited." Pierce informed.

He walked over and sat across from us.

"Two targets level six." He jabbed his finger on the table. "I want confirmed death in ten hours."

We glance at each other and back at him. Easy job. I'll take one and he'll take the other.

The maid suddenly came back into the room. "I'm sorry Mr Pierce I.." She trailed off as she saw both of us in front of her. "My god." She stood there timidly.

Piece hung his head disappointingly. "Oh Renata, I wish you would've knocked." He pulled out a handgun and shot her twice right then and there.

He turned to us and sighed. "Now I gotta replace that rug."

I roll my eyes. We needed more info on the targets.

"Names." I say bluntly.

"That's not important." He stated.

I raise an eyebrow.

"Just look for a woman with red hair and a tall, muscular man. They'll for sure be together." He inquired.

"Does he have a red, blue and white shield?" Winter Soldier asked.

Pierce simply smirked and headed upstairs. "I'm going to bed."

We might as well start as soon as possible.

I look at him questionably. "I take it you've encountered him before?"

His eyes narrow. "Back when I finished off Fury, he was there, at least I think it was him. Tried to stop me."

That can't be easy targets, not for a rookie assassin that is. We shouldn't have too much trouble, ten hours is enough time.

Once we got back to the base, we notified our superiors of our given task. We were sent out right away after grabbing all the necessary weapons and equipment we'd need. A few other soldiers were sent out to help us, which leads me to now.

Currently, I was parked in a truck on the side of a ramp from a highway onto a bridge. A few feet away was the Winter Soldier waiting for my signal. The red haired woman and the man would soon drive by, then we would attack them.

A car started approaching us in the farthest lane. "I've locked eyes on the targets." I spoke into my earpiece. "Male target in the passenger seat, female in the back. A HYDRA double agent also seated in the back, and a darker skinned man in the drivers seat. Navy blue Chevrolet."

"I'm heading in." He replied.

He climbed onto the back of the car, grabbing the double agent by his tie, and tossing him straight out of the now shattered window.

He shot through the roof of the car attempting to hit them inside. He won't have any kind of luck doing that, it's like shooting snakes in a barrel.

They slammed on the brakes, causing Winter Soldier to go flying forward. He swiftly landed, digging his fingers into the pavement to stop himself.

Before the woman could shoot, I jammed my truck right into the back and drove straight into it, not taking my foot off the gas.

Winter Soldier dodged the car coming straight for him and sprung on top of it. Sparks emitted from the wheels as they skidded down the road.

He punched a hole in the roof and yanked the steering wheel right from the car. He avoided the red haired woman's bullets and landed right on the hood of my car.

Must he get in the way?

The car began losing control and started to tip over. The blonde man grabbed a hold of the woman and the other man, popped the car door off the hinges and landed on the road just narrowly escaping the impact of the car.

I stepped out of the truck and stood next to Winter Soldier. I blasted my revolver straight for them, hitting the man's shield and sending him flying backwards off the bridge and into a moving bus. The bus collided with another, creating a drastic collision.

We both fired continuously at all three of them. They had a disadvantage of needing to avoid the oncoming traffic along with our bullets. This shouldn't last too long.

"I got the girl, you focus on the man with the shield." I tell him, looking beyond the bridge.

I aim for her as she ran right across a street behind the fallen buses. Before I could predict where she was, she caught me by surprise and began shooting from right below me, out of view from my peripheral vision.

She ended up leaving a large crack on my protective glasses. I ripped them off and tossed them aside.

We continue shooting at each other, I carelessly shot repeatedly, regardless of how much ammunition was left. I couldn't waste my time using precision and timing with my shots, not like she was.

Winter Soldier had jumped off the bridge and onto the street below, heading towards the bus that the blonde man had crashed into.

The backup soldiers fired at the bus. The man had bursted out and used his shield to cover himself from the oncoming bullets. After taking down a few of the HYDRA soldiers, Winter Soldier came in, firing at a police car and blowing it to pieces.

I got back to what I was doing. The woman was heading down the street, from what I could see she had hidden herself behind a Honda Civic parallel parked on the street.

I jumped off the bridge and approached the vehicle silently. I could hear a faint voice, a woman's voice instructing someone to go a certain way to escape. I've got her...

I crouch beside another car and pull out a grenade from my pocket. I roll it under the two cars so that it reaches where she was hiding.

It rolled and rolled, until it lightly bumped the edge of the curb. In a matter of seconds, the perimeter was completely engulfed in flames from the explosion.

She wasn't anywhere in sight. I furrow my eyebrows, wondering if she maybe perished along with the fire. Suddenly I felt a hard impact on my back as she kicked me to the ground.

We engaged in heavy combat. I swung punches and she easily dodged them. When she threw in her attacks, I could also dodge. Something was off. She was familiar, I had seen her, met her before. Her fighting style was almost identical to mine.

My head began to ache. When I was caught off guard, she whipped a hard kick to my face, knocking my mask right off.

Right then, her face completely dropped, like she'd seen a ghost. No worse, like she'd just seen someone die right in front of her at that very moment.

"Miss Shadow?" She asked.

I pulled my arm back to punch her, but she stopped me.

"No, or should I say, Y/n?"
