Chapter 13 - Let Me Handle It
Present Day - 2014
Winter Shadow's POV
I drummed my hands on the leather seat of the truck. I had my mission set in place, I know what I'm supposed to do.
My sole purpose and mission is to locate Director Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. and attempt to assassinate him through his vehicle, that is what I was assigned.
The truck rumbled and bumped on the gravel coated roads beneath me. I glance forward to see Winter Soldier sitting directly across from me, his eyes and mouth completely covered by thick masks like mine.
A dozen HYDRA soldiers sat around the jet compartment to monitor us now and help throughout the entire mission. My blood was hot and heated with unimaginable adrenaline that pulsed through my veins. I was ready to kill. To complete my given mission without any interruptions whatsoever that could prevent me from succeeding.
I shifted around in my seat, waiting for the ride to finally be over so I could make use of the energy.
After what felt like another hour, we finally came to a stop. I strap on my wrist guards and bulletproof vest tightly to myself. My dagger was secured safely and discreetly in a pocket on my cargo pants. My combat boots were laced up and double knotted. I pulled my hair back into a tight ponytail out of my way.
Before I stepped out, I put on my mask to cover up half of my face. The Winter Soldier and I were led to a concrete building about ten stories high. We circled the building to find a well-hidden trapdoor under a shrub that would lead us straight down and underneath the building. HYDRA was hidden everywhere, yet the Avengers, an elite and incredible team made of super humans and geniuses, can never seem to locate us.
After going down the extensive amount of stairs, we approached a large door with a handprint scanner beside it. I felt a harsh push on my back.
"Hand, now." A soldier ordered.
I obeyed and placed my hand flat against the screen.
A green light flashed and the door clicked open.
We were led down a hallway and into a large briefing room at the end. I sat down on one side of the table and folded my arms awaiting orders.
"Etot chelovek, Nick Fury. On dolzhen umeret'." Our superior commanded in Russian.
We nod our heads. "Gotovy soblyudat'."
The Winter Soldier would shoot and assassinate Director Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. in his vehicle. Beforehand I will knock his vehicle off course and hopefully immobilize him temporarily until The Winter Soldier was ready.
The Winter Soldier was taken to another room. I was about to follow him when I was stopped by someone's hand.
"You need a disguise." He told me.
I didn't question it and followed him to another room.
He tossed me a police uniform. "Put it on."
I stare at him intently. He rolled his eyes and turned around while I changed. I put the shirt overtop of my bulletproof vest and put my mask away in my bag. I moved my arms around uncomfortably, not fully used to such stiff clothing. Maybe it was the reason why the police were always so useless when trying to catch us.
We gathered a few more gadgets that could possibly aid us during the mission, and headed out. Outside there were a couple of vacant police cars. I look at the soldiers questionably.
"Stay in the back. The tinted windows will cover you." He told the Winter Soldier."
"You will be driving that one over there." They pointed to a car on the far left. They handed me a sheet of coordinates and where I'd be waiting. The plan was simple, two other soldiers would drive next to Fury to distract him. As he approaches the intersection, I'll crash my vehicle right into his. I'd have to let the other soldiers handle the rest.
My job wasn't as I'd hoped it would be, I needed to be more useful. Unfortunately it wasn't up to me.
I got into the car and started up the engine. I put my black shades on. I exited the parking lot and headed straight for the street I'd have to wait on.
As I drove down the busy streets, I noticed that cars were slowing down slightly when they saw the police car pass by. I grip the leather steering wheel tight. I couldn't risk missing his car. They told us that it didn't matter if we hit any pedestrians, as long as we strike Fury, there was no point in worrying about those who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I parked by the curb and waited for my cue from my earpiece.
"We're approaching the target." One of them spoke after a few minutes.
"Let me know when." I replied.
About thirty seconds later, they informed me of their whereabouts.
"Be ready Shadow."
I started the engine up again and drove down to the end of the street going onto the main road.
"Now!" They ordered.
I slammed my foot on the gas and collided straight into Fury's black van.
Two more police cars surrounded him and rammed right into each side of his van. To be sure, I went forward and straight back into the car.
Using my special lenses, I zoomed in on Fury to check his state. He appeared to be fine with a minor fracture.
"Status update, target still alive and conscious." I spoke.
A larger police van with disguised HYDRA soldiers came in. Every soldier got out of their cars and began firing at him.
I quickly put on my mask and headed out to join.
A few other soldiers opened their trunk to reveal a large device that would break Fury out of the vehicle and smash his windows. The machine planted itself straight into the concrete roads.
After just one push of a button, the machine slammed itself into Fury's vehicle, nearly knocking it to its side.
They repeated the action, damaging his windows even more.
Then again, only right after Fury pulled out a gun and fired at the HYDRA soldiers. He was able to strike a few of the soldiers, eliminating about eight of his threats.
All of a sudden, he pulled a switch on the same gun, and shot a grenade right into one of the vehicles causing an explosion.
He continued to shoot at the HYDRA soldiers until over half of them were out cold.
I duck behind a remaining vehicle and aim my rifle for his head.
Just as I was about to pull the trigger, he stepped on his gas and bolted down the street away from the scene.
I quickly got back into my car and tailed him down the road. I swerve past civilian cars, avoiding another collision and losing sight of Fury.
I was now directly behind him. His driving began to get sloppy and reckless, meaning he was getting desperate.
He crashed into a beige Jeep, yet continued on. He then skidded straight between two cars, grazing their sides and causing them to stop and block my path.
I slam on the breaks.
Damn it.
I wasn't done with him just yet.
I leaped on top of my car and shot at him from where I was. When he continued driving, I went after him with my rifle in hand.
He cut through the traffic next to a bus. I fired right through the bus windows, neglecting the acknowledgment of the civilians seated in the bus. I couldn't worry about them, I had to get to Fury.
He backed right into another soldier, and drove straight into another car to hit another soldier. It was just me now.
I got into a random car and followed him down the road at full speed.
With one hand on the wheel, I fired at him once I was beside him.
All of a sudden, he lurched right into my car to try and knock me off course.
I angrily grab at his steering wheel through the window and attempted to steer him off the road. Right then, a bus coming from another street went straight into me. I, along with the car, flipped over onto the road.
Suddenly, a voice came into my ear. "Let me handle it." He said.
It was the Winter Soldier, he had been prepared and waiting just down the block.
Winter Soldier's POV
The Winter Shadow was down. She pushed herself up off the road to look at me. I had to ignore her for the time being and focus. Nick Fury came speeding down the road, confusion grew in his eyes when he saw me standing still right there in front of him.
I unhesitatingly shot a black disc-shaped grenade towards his van. It clipped right underneath.
The impact from the explosion caused the van to flipped forward and fly down the street.
The van skidded down the road, causing an unbearable screeching noise. The civilians all stood, covering their ears and watching in horror at the scene that was unfolding in front of them.
I began to walk towards him to finish him off. He groaned in pain and with his decreasing strength, looked up in my direction.
He seemed to have a strange sort of laser device. I couldn't see clearly enough to understand what he was really doing. I yank the car door right off the car to see that he was nowhere in sight. He had burned a hole straight through the roof of the car, deep into the pavement under the roads.
I was too late.
