Chapter 12 - Stay with Me

Flashback Part 2

"What the fuck?!" Y/n got up, knocking her seat over in the process.

She furiously marched down the steps, the alcohol not helping the matter.

Bucky stood astounded and clearly hurt. Y/n couldn't allow this woman to do something like that and get away with it.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Y/n said grabbing her attention.

The girl was rubbing her hand that she punched him with. "None of your business bitch." She spat.

"Actually, it is my business!" Y/n shot back.

The girl narrowed her eyes. "What'd you say?"

Y/n stood her ground. "I said it is my business, that's my friend!"

"Get outta here." She said. She shoved her into the table behind her, cutting her forearm.

The room had grew silent, everyone's eyes glued to the situation unfolding in front of them. The only audible sound being the low rumble of thunder coming from the storm outside.

The girl turned her back to her, slowly walking up to Bucky who was rubbing his face after being hit.

Y/n got up and snapped out of it, she grabbed her shoulder and swung a hard punch to her jaw. "Don't you dare touch him!"

Her ex boyfriend, who was steering clear from the event, whipped around, enraged at what she'd just done, and slapped Y/n hard, causing her to fall face first.

"You bastard..." Bucky stared at Y/n who was laying on the ground, groaning in pain.

He pulled back and landed a hard right hook into the guy's face.

Lana and Mila stood from the upper floor, watching them, dumfounded of what they just witnessed.

Finally, the bartender quickly ran up to end the fight. He ordered everyone to carry on with their evening. He then evicted the two girls and the ex boyfriend from the bar.

Bucky reached his hand out to help Y/n up. "Are you ok? Let's go get you cleaned up."

Y/n nodded, until she saw a glimpse of blood coming from his knuckle.

"Buck, your hand." She said softly.

He shook his head. "Don't you worry about me, it's you I'm worried about."

"How come we weren't kicked out of the bar?" Y/n asked.

Bucky smiled slyly. "It one of the perks of having friends. The bartender's a buddy of mine."

She laughed and told him to wait by the door to go talk to Lana and Mila for a minute.

"Thanks for the night out you guys, but I gotta go get these cuts cleaned up." She said.

They both stood silently, gaping at her. "Y/n you kicked ass back there, I'm proud." Lana remarked.

"Yeah but are you ok?" Mila asked rolling her eyes at Lana.

Y/n waved her hand. "Ah I'm fine don't worry." She smiled.

They said their goodbyes and Y/n headed to the door to rejoin Bucky.

Just then, an older man stopped her. "I'm sorry, but what was your name?"

Y/n looked around and pointed to herself. "Who me?"

"Yes."

"Oh.. uh I'm Y/n, Y/n Y/l/n, who's asking?

"My apologies Miss, my name is Doctor Erskine, I work for the SSR."

Y/n looked at him, surprised by this. He must be working to help America end the war.

"I witnessed that punch of yours, it's quite remarkable I must say, especially since you don't see many woman acting so bravely like that."

"Oh, well thank you sir... erm.. Doctor."

"I may have an opportunity you might not want to turn down, do you mind if I could have your postal code?"

Y/n glanced around the room. "What kind of opportunity?"

"Well do you care about America?"

She nodded. "Of course."

"Well you could maybe be the one to help end this war, I'll let you know when the time comes." He said.

She gave him her postal code and walked to rejoin Bucky.

She immediately questioned her actions. Why had she just given some random man her postal code? Or the real question was, how many drinks had she even had?

She walked back over to Bucky who was waiting by the door, observing his injury.

"I have a first aid kit at home, c'mon." She said. He nodded and held open the door for her. The thunder and lightning stopped, but the rain was still slightly sprinkling the streets.

Bucky called a cab and helped Y/n in who now had a throbbing headache.

They sat in the back in silence. Y/n rested her head on his shoulder the whole way, exhausted from the eventful evening.

She traced the droplets of water on the window with her finger.

The radio played a faint jazz in the background, soothing them both.

Y/n was still in slight disbelief of what had just occurred. All she wanted to do was go out and have fun with some friends to take her mind off of everything. It was all going smoothly, she was having a nice time.

She knew that defending her best friend was what anyone would've done. He definitely would've, and he did. He didn't hesitate to pull that punch for her after being knocked over. He'd do it for her.. he'd do it for Steve..

Steve..

"Oh my god Bucky what about Steve! He's still there!" She whispered harshly.

He chuckled softly. "I told him we'd be heading out, I offered for him to come with us but he said he'd rather just go home."

Y/n nodded, relieved that they hadn't completely ditched him. From what just happened, she figured he most likely didn't have the best night either.

The cab pulled up right in front of Y/n's house. They both climbed out and again, despite Y/n's protest to pay, Bucky wouldn't let her.

She unlocked her front door and gestured him inside. While he sat down at her small dining table, she lit a few candles and poured them each a glass of water.

The first aid kit had enough for Y/n to be able to suture up her cut on her forearm. But she decided to do that last and focus on Bucky's hand first.

She sat back down at the table and took out everything she needed.

"So, before we caused a riot, how was your night?" Bucky asked, trying to make some small talk.

"It was alright, probably should've had a little less to drink but.." she trailed off, examining his cut.

He smiled sincerely. "You were having fun, plus I can barely tell you're even drunk at all."

She chuckled. "I guess you're right."

She took out rubbing alcohol from the box. "Okay you're gonna have to brace yourself, this stuff isn't really what I'd call... delightful."

He nodded, inhaling sharply. She wet the gauze and met his eyes. He gave her a confirming nod.

She quickly applied the gauze and gave him a sympathetic look when he exhaled through his teeth.

"All good?" She asked.

"Mmhmm yep." He murmured, giving her a fake smile.

"Tell me, what exactly happened before you came into the bar?" Y/n said grabbing a bandage.

"Well, everything was okay at first, she came off as little stubborn and possessive, but I ignored it. Steve's date was her best friend. She seemed to be slightly on the nicer side, but all of that changed when we went to their favorite restaurant not far from the bar."

"They got wasted?" Y/n began tenderly wrapping the bandage around his wound.

"Yeah."

"So why'd you come to the bar if they were already drunk?" She asked.

"We had no choice. Steve and I suggested to just take them home and head out, but the storm came. And they insisted we stay with them. So we came in the bar partially to dry off."

"I see." Y/n said, tucking the end of the bandage so that it would stay neatly in place.

"Wow, you're pretty good at that!" He remarked observing Y/n's work.

She was about to put the kit aside, before Bucky stopped her and placed his bandaged hand on hers. "You need help too, let me."

He gestured for her to hold out her forearm where she deeply cut it.

"Do you know how to suture?" She asked.

"I've done it before.. on fruit... in health class." He laughed.

"I'll guide you through it." She smiled.

She tried her best not to let out a pained moan, biting her lip. She was used to giving stitches to patients, but never truly experienced it for herself.

Every once and awhile he would glance up at her and meet her eyes. He would give her a reassuring look and continue.

"Aaaand done." He said triumphantly.

Y/n twisted her arm to get a view on his work. "Excellent job Doctor Barnes." She said jokingly.

He gave her a goofy grin and took out a gauze.

"What's that for?" She questioned.

"Your forehead is bleeding a bit, you must've cut it when you were pushed into that table."

"Jeez." She sighed.

She winced when he put the rubbing alcohol on the cut. Fortunately it wasn't as painful as the sutures were.

He gently placed a band-aid on the cut, and sat back, as if to let her know he was done.

"Thank you Buck." She whispered softly.

"I should be thanking you. You really showed them back there."

"You would do the same." She said simply.

She stood up and put the first aid kit back in the closet she got it from.

At first she felt guilty for all the harm and chaos she caused back at the bar, but she thought into what Bucky, Lana and Mila said; maybe she should feel slightly accomplished. It isn't normal for women to stand up for themselves like that, especially against a man like that ex boyfriend of that girl.

She turned to see Bucky peering out the window through the curtains.

"The rain picked up again. Do you think I'll make it to my house?" He asked not taking his eyes off the rain.

"There's no way I'm letting you go out in that weather Buck. You're staying here."

He turned and looked at her.

"Stay.. with me?" She whispered.

"Yeah, of course." He nodded.

The dim light coming from the flickering candles casted a light silhouette of him. She motioned for him to come into her room.

"I'll be there in a second." He smiled.

Bucky gazed out the window. Perhaps this rain was favoring him in the way he'd hoped for. Ever since the past couple of years, he knew deep down that he felt something special for
Y/n, but he was too afraid to risk jeopardizing their friendship, and there was a good chance that she didn't feel the same way. They had been friends since their childhood after all, what would happen if she rejected him, and they could never go back to the way they used to be.

He shook his head and headed for her bedroom. Before he could say anything, she was already fast asleep. She was curled up cozily in her sheets, her hair draped over her face. She was absolutely beautiful.

He turned on his heel and slumped onto her couch. He decided it was best to sleep there instead, as he had done many times before.
