Chapter 11 - Let's Have Some Fun
Flashback
January 22nd, 1942
"This is getting ridiculous." Y/n thought to herself as she tried her best to flatten her untamable hair.
Y/n wasn't one to put much time and effort into her hair, despite the fact that women of this decade always had such flawless and dainty hairstyles.
"Y/n how many times do I have to tell you, you already look stunning." Her roommate Lana said, leaning on the doorframe.
"I know I know, I just wanted to change it up a bit."
Lana scoffed at her excuse. "You mean that you're feeling a tad bit jealous that Steve and Bucky are out on double dates?"
Y/n felt her face heat up. "No! That's not it."
"Then tell me what it is." She insisted.
Y/n set the hairbrush down and look at Lana through the mirror in front of her.
"I dunno, I just thought maybe I'd try and look a little nicer. All the other woman in Brooklyn sure know how to dress up."
Lana walked over to her and placed her hands on her shoulders. "Y/n you don't need to try and be someone you're not, plus the natural look totally suits you."
Y/n smiled warmly at her. "Thanks Lana."
"We're gonna have fun! It's a girls night out." She posed sassily causing Y/n to giggle.
The two continued getting ready, applying makeup and all the finishing touches.
They met each other while Lana was working, as she was a waitress at Y/n's favorite diner. Since she worked as a low payed nurse, the two got along talking about their similar troubles.
Y/n was wearing a scarlet dress that fell just below her knees, a simple chain necklace with a golden heart charm, matching earrings, a pearly bracelet, and a silver watch. All she needed was the perfect pair of shoes.
Just then, Lana came up to Y/n with a pair of black stilettos in her hands.
"Here, these are perfect." She said.
Y/n rolled her eyes. "Lana you know that I cannot for the life of me walk in any type of heel. Let alone stilettos!"
"Yeah but you'd look killer good in them!" She remarked.
Y/n laughed and took them from her hands. They were the perfect match to go with her outfit, but she knew she would spend the entire night stumbling around, trying not to fall flat on her face. She shook off her gaze and handed them back to Lana.
"That's alright, I'll just stick with the flats that I had." Said Y/n.
Lana frowned. "You mean those boring ole' things? C'mon now Y/n."
"Hey! Those were a gift from Bucky." She murmured.
Lana grinned and winked at Y/n. "Ah, I see you're right, you should wear those ones. They're extra special."
Again, her cheeks grew red at another one of Lana's snarky comments.
"I know exactly what you're thinking Lana, and it's never gonna happen."
"Don't lie Y/n Y/l/n! I've seen the way you two look at each other, I'm sure Steve notices it too."
Y/n waved her off. "We've been best friends since we were little, we're just super close alright?"
Lana shrugged. "I'm just saying it could happen."
Y/n lightly padded her face with blush that perfectly collided with her skin tone. She then slid two simple bobby-pins on the side of her hair, and adjusted their placement.
The two were ready.
Lana came into Y/n's room, exaggeratively walking and posing to show off herself.
"Who are you and what have you done with Lana Martinez?" Y/n gaped.
She had a long, emerald green dress with a gold belt around her waist, which hugged her curves in all the right places. She also wore the black stilettos that she initially offered to Y/n, which in Y/n's opinion, looked way better on Lana.
She also had the most beautiful necklace Y/n had ever seen. Lana caught her gaze and smiled. "It's my favorite. It once belonged to my aunt. She died in the Titanic sinking back in 12."
Y/n frowned solemnly, causing Lana to shake her head. "Oh no don't worry, I never knew her. She died before I was born."
The both stepped outside, waiting for their ride.
"Hm, Mila said she'd be here by 6:30." Y/n said checking her wristwatch.
Soon enough, Mila came running down the street, flailing her arms at them.
She ran up to them, bending over to catch her breath.
"I'm.... here...sorry....bout that." She panted.
She stopped and stared at Lana and Y/n.
"Wow, you guys look great." She said.
"As do you Mila." Y/n laughed.
"And it's a good thing, you know that tonight isn't just to go out to drink wine and gossip right?" Mila winked.
"What do you mean?" Y/n furrowed her eyebrows.
"We mean that the place we're going has all kinds of young fellows waiting to meet girls like us." Lana smiled.
A yellow taxi came their way, Lana waved at it and it came to a rolling stop in front of them.
Before they got in, Y/n leaned over to Lana. "I thought just a minute ago you were saying something about me and Bucky being a thing?"
"Well, he's on his own date for now isn't he?" Lana said.
Y/n gaped. "Make up your mind!" She said, causing Lana to laugh.
They all got in, squished together in the back of the vehicle.
"Where to ladies?" The taxi driver asked.
"You can just drop us at 5th Avenue, thanks." Mila said.
He nodded and drove off.
The three sat in a comfortable silence, the car filling up with a heavy scent of perfume.
Y/n gazed out the window to see the glowing lights of mid-evening Brooklyn. She began reminiscing her thoughts, about what Lana said, about Bucky.
He was somewhere out there, treating a girl to a lovely night out with him. Steve probably doubting himself despite Y/n telling him not to before they left.
Maybe her and Bucky were getting a little closer, but did that really matter? To her it did.
Bucky had taken another girl out on a date, not Y/n, that only meant that he didn't see Y/n in the way that Lana said he did.
"No." She thought to herself. "We're best friends, and that's it."
"Y/n? Y/n earth to Y/n."
Y/n blinked to see Mila waving her hand in front of her face.
"We were talking about what we should do afterwards."
"Oh, well let's see how drunk we get." Y/n laughed, causing the driver to glance at the three with a concerned expression.
The three just smiled awkwardly at him.
The car stopped a few minutes later, on a bustling street filled with people.
Mila and Y/n reached out with their purses to pay the man, but Lana insisted on paying for the short drive.
They stepped out onto the sidewalk, the wind had slightly picked up since they left.
"We should go, I have a feeling we've got a storm coming our way." Mila said looking up at the darkening clouds.
"You made the reservation right?" Y/n asked.
"Sure did. No waiting around tonight."
They walk down the street, until they reached a warmly lit bar on the corner of the block.
They stepped in and announced their reservation to the till. They were let in and guided to a high, round table on the second level of the bar. They sat near a railing, able to see whoever entered the place.
"Ah, now I see why you booked this table." Lana smirked.
"Yup! All the sexy men that walk through that door are in our sight."
They all laughed and stood up to grab drinks from the bar.
You would think the place was a restaurant, by the whole reservation process, but the bar had become insanely popular, and was always packed and busy with adults wanting some fun on a Friday night.
Now, in order to get in, you needed to be seated at a specific table so that only a number of people could be in the bar at once.
Of course it only reduced a fraction of the amount of people that used to be in here. It was still one of the most packed bars in Brooklyn.
The three shifted around the crowd, Y/n trying to hide her discomfort from her friends. There was a reason she preferred to spend the night alone, or in a smaller atmosphere than here. She didn't want to disappoint them, especially when she finally had some female friends that she could hang out with.
"One whiskey over here, and uhh." Lana looked over at them.
"A glass of red for me." Mila said.
Lana raised an eyebrow at Y/n.
"Oh uh.. a scotch over here."
With their drinks in hand, they walked back to their table.
"Y/n since when do you like drinks like scotch?" I know Lana has always been more of a rustic drinker but you?" Mila twirled her wine around her glass.
"Don't know really, it's what I always have."
The next hour consisted of the three eyeing every man that stepped foot into the bar. They each guessed what he did for a living, and as they got more and more drunk, they would guess what kind a man he was in bed.
"I bet he's in construction." Mila said, pointing to a dark haired man with a bit of stubble on his face.
"Oooh I like." Lana said sipping her third glass of whiskey.
"Mmm not my type." Y/n shook her head.
"Well that one guy in the white tank had the muscles of a god." Lana sighed. "Too bad he had his wife with him.
"How could you even tell he was married?" Y/n questioned.
"Uh.. did you see the ring she was wearing! It was huge! And shiny as hell. I could easily see it from over here." Lana exclaimed.
The now familiar creak of the door was audible, causing Lana and Mila's eyes to dart over to see who'd come in.
Bucky and his date, along with Steve and his date has come in, seemingly wet from the storm.
Y/n had been busy taking a sip of her drink to notice their arrival. "Anyone good?" she asked.
The other two furiously shook their heads.
"Nope, just some old guy." Lana lied.
"Yeah he has a cigar and a cane." Mila added, the two trying their bests to make sure she didn't look down.
They glanced back to see them all seated at a table similar to theirs. There was a huge problem however, you could see Bucky and the girl perfectly from where they were sitting. Even worse from the fact that they were facing their way, so there was a chance he could see them too.
Thankfully Y/n still hadn't noticed their presence.
"Hey whaddya say we end it off soon." Lana said. "Or maybe just go somewhere else like a movie."
Y/n placed her drink down. "But it's only been a couple of hours, plus we'd be walking right into the storm."
Lana and Mila glanced nervously at each other. This was a lot harder than they hoped.
"Well I'm gonna go grab another, anything for you guys?" Y/n stood up, stumbling a bit.
"Allow me, I actually wanted to use the bathroom anyways hehe." Mila said, taking the opportunity.
"Gee thanks Mila."
Lana gave her a thumbs up before she walked away.
She peered downwards to the lower floor. Bucky appeared to be discussing something with the girl. She wasn't all that pretty, dirty blonde hair and greenish-blue eyes. Lana was surprised to notice that she held an agitated look on her face. Bucky didn't seem all that happy either. Something wasn't right.
"I'm just saying that maybe we should call it a night." Lana heard Bucky say.
"Are you calling me a drunk? Who the hell do you think you are?!" The lady retorted.
Bucky put his hands up defensively. "Woah, that's not what I meant."
Steve was at the bar, his date seemingly busy in "defending" her friend.
"Have you noticed that your friend left me? He barely talked this whole time!"
"He's just a little shy I'm sure he'll open up to y-"
"Enough with the excuses!" she cut him off, slurring her words. She was drunk as ever.
Lana glanced around in hopes Mila would return with their drinks soon.
She checked to see if Y/n had noticed them yet, thankfully she was swirling around her drink, leaning her elbow on the table. "I'm never gonna find a man Lana." She sighed.
Lana looked at her, confused at her sudden desire of a relationship. It was probably the drinks, she justified.
"Y/n you cannot say that." Lana pointed a finger at her. "There are plenty of men out there who would kill to get a date with you. You've got it all!" She listed it all on her fingers. "You're pretty, kind, smart, stylish."
Y/n smiled. "You're the best Lana, I don't deserve you. Thanks for being my roomie."
"Girl, you gotta stop doubting yourself." She beamed.
Mila had finally returned with the drinks.
She raised an eyebrow at Lana, to which she shook her head implying that Y/n had yet to notice Bucky.
That quickly changed when an abrupt yelling came from downstairs.
Another man had came in, claiming to be the his date's ex boyfriend.
"What's going on?" Y/n looked down and gasped when she saw Bucky get punched right the the jaw by his date.
"What the fuck?!"
