Landing Bay, 2013
Bags of junk were being thrown out of Skye's van as she prepared for her new life on the Bus, S.H.I.E.L.D's mobile base of operations for the covert team. Never in her life did she think that her life would be changing for the better.
"Hey, no joyrides, OK?" She said to an ongoing crew member as she lifted all her things into the Bus. "That's my house." Just as the crew member slapped a prism-like device on the hood of the car, Skye muttered. "Where do they think of this stuff?"
She walked aboard the hangar bay of the BUS, past a SHIELD ATV and Lola, right before the lab Fitz, Jemma, Zach, and Nick were all in. "Ah, Agent Coulson told us the news!" Jemma beamed. "What a wonderful surprise, isn't it, Fitz?" She nudged her friend, who talked over her. "Yeah," was all Fitz said.
"No, it's wonderful!" "Yeah, a surprise."
"Hey, how much do you wanna bet they'll be together in a couple years?" Nick whispered to Zach. "15, 20 dollars?"
"Nah, I bet they'll be together like next year," Zach whispered back. "But make it fifty, and you got a deal." Nick chuckled and put out his hand. "Pleasure doing business with ya, Mr. Iron Marvel."
"First day of school," Skye smiled and handed her stuff off to the boys, and Fitz grunted as he received the heaviest of her things.
BUS LOUNGE AREA — AN HOUR LATER.
"So, 0-8-4, huh?" Eddie asked Zach as she sat down opposite him. "What do you think it is?"
"I dunno, could be anything," Zach said as he didn't look up from his laptop. "Could be Asgardian... or it could be a message saying, 'Screw off, Eddie'." Eddie sighed and looked at him. "You're still mad about that, Zach?"
"Look, I wanna start fresh, man." Eddie said, as Zach glared at him. "I know, I was an asshole four years ago. But I started a new chapter, and I wanna make up for it."
"Alright, earn my trust back," Zach muttered. "Just like Ella's doing. And even though we're not exactly friends now... I am sorry for your loss."
Eddie's face went glum as he sighed and rubbed his eyes. "I... I really appreciate it, man." He fought back the urge to sob. "She missed you. She loved you like a brother."
Zach pursed his lips together and nodded. "And I loved her like that too."
Eddie took his leave, just as Skye noticed and took it. "So, what's the deal with those guys?" She asked. "Seems there was a bit of... I'm not sure what, but there was something."
"You really wanna know, New Girl?" Zach asked as he put away his laptop, just as Skye's eyes perked up. "I mean, if it's no problem," She reiterated. "I don't wanna intrude on any past or anything."
"It's fine," Zach laughed. "So... Ella," He pointed to the brunette minding her business in her cot. "I actually met and dated her in college. Been together for four years, and I was planning on marrying her."
"And Eddie..." He pointed back to the tall man. "He's Ella's brother. He turned out to be a bit of a jerk back then, but he wants to make up for it. I do kinda feel bad for him, he lost the girl he loved."
"Oh my god," Skye whispered.
"But I am kinda hoping to be good with Eddie," Zach answered. "Long as he isn't coming off as a jerk."
"It's good that you're not angry towards them," Skye said. "It took me some time a couple of years ago," Zach admitted. "But I really do want to be good with them again. Ella and I are... sort of talking again. Who knows if it will ever go back to what it was."
"Yeah... yeah, I get that." Skye muttered, and she put her hands on the table. "So, about 0-8-4s. What are they?"
"That is the S.H.I.E.L.D. term for an object of unknown origin." Zach explains. "You know what the last one was, Skye?"
"What?"
"A magic hammer."
Llactapata, Peru — Incan archaeological Site.
The team had arrived at the site of the 0-8-4, and exited the cars, just as Ward took action. "Tire tracks 40 meters back," He stated. "I'll check them against the site's trucks, make sure we're alone."
"Too much exposure here," May added. "I'm gonna find a place to park." She got back into the van, as Fitz, Simmons, Nick and Zach came around, viewing the architecture of the site, but Fitz had his mind set on one other thing.
"I would love to see a capuchin in the wild," He said to the group. "Maybe a yellow-tailed wooly monkey! You know, um, Peru has 32 different species of monkey."
"Yeah, and close to 200 species of snake!" Simmons added gleefully. "The Shushupe has a—"
Fitz accidently knocked into a wheel of another vehicle, distracting her. "Fa-Fasinating venom... It's neurotoxic, proteolytic and hemolytic. Ha!"
Nick turned to Zach. "Do you know anything of what she just said?" He asked him, as he shook his head. "All I got was something with Brain & blood." Zach answered. "I don't like snakes."
"Neither do I, man." Nick shared his sentiment.
"That's... fascinating." Fitz shuttered and chuckled nervously, which Jemma caught onto. "Oh, no, I'd be much more concerned with earthquakes, mala—"
She quickly stopped as she slapped all their necks, as the three wondered why she'd done that.
"There's no vaccine for dengue fever!" She advised them, as she looked forward. "Ah, look at this..." Jemma awed in wonder.
In front of them was a giant & ancient Incan temple, their site to find the 0-8-4. It was beautiful.
"We should warn the people who live around here that the 0-8-4 is dangerous." Skye told Coulson, as the two of them, plus Eddie and Ella, ventured down to meet with the team. "They're already dealing with anti-mining rebels and the Shining Path Guerillas. I could post something."
"Hey, remember the panic when the anti-matter meteor splashed down just off the coast of Miami?" Eddie spoke up. "Nearly devoured the city?"
"No?" Skye answered.
"And there's your answer," Ella said. "We at S.H.I.E.L.D keep everything quiet and contained. Humanity remains safe and no fear is spread."
"So what am I doing?"
"Well, if it gets out," Coulson instructed her. "I might need you to create some kind of diversion, put the public on the wrong scent." "Aye-aye, Cap'n." Skye nodded.
Coulson and the three arrived at the entrance of the temple, as the first team had found the professor who was willing to take them inside to the 0-8-4. "Good morning, Professor," Phil greeted. "I'm Agent Coulson with S.H.I.E.L.D. I understand you've made an interesting discovery?"
The professor sighed. "I-I'm not sure how to explain it." He told him as he showed him the temple. "This temple dates back at least 500 years, it's filled with pre-Incan artifacts. One of them is impossible, and looks like it might be dangerous.
"Well, that's why we're here." Coulson said, and the professor took them inside the temple, right to the 0-8-4, which was a strange metal looking device attached to the wall. "Exactly how we found it." The professor explained.
"Who else knows about this?" Coulson asked, as Zach took a closer look. "Just the ministry." The professor said, "I believe they're the ones who contacted you.
Fitz and Simmons opened up their gear, while Zach and Nick took closer looks at the 0-8-4. Eddie and Ella stood ready near the entrance. "Sir, I need you and your team to evacuate the site until we determine the risk associated with this object." Coulson advised him.
Fitz fired up his drones, and they flew towards Zach and Nick, but frightened the professor. "Leave the man alone," Simmons scolded the drone in a friendly manner.
Skye checked her phone. "Nothing about this anywhere," She said aloud. "It's amazing, I searched every data stream. What do you got here, guys?"
"Well, see these blue parts at the top?" Zach pointed out. "Must be power cells, could be human advancement, maybe like Howard Stark's work in WW2... I still can't believe he's technically my grandfather."
"But that would mean it was made somewhere in the forties," Nick said. "The way it's poking out looks like it was buried the same time this place was even made.
"He's right, the object's placement in fossiliferous rock formations suggests it's been here for at least 1,500 years." Jemma added to Nick's point. "This pre-dates the temple by a millennium. Ah, maybe it's alien!"
"Yeah, but the shape and craftsmanship —" Fitz pointed out. "It's almost German."
"Well, if it was German," Zach said. "I always heard stories that one of the HYDRA scientists, Arnim Zola, was always screwing around with all sorts of technology when he worked under the Red Skull."
Outside the temple.
May stood guard outside as the professor quickly left to inform his teammates of Coulson's warning, while Ward walked up to the temple. "Tires match the prof's truck." Ward told May, who would tell Coulson. "Where's your sidearm?"
"If I need a gun," May coldly responded. "I'll take one."
"Right." Ward noted. "Forgot I was working with The Cavalry—"
"Don't ever call me that." May snapped.
"Apologies." Ward nodded. "I've heard the stories — what went down in Bahrain, 'bout you in action. You know, it was smart of Coulson to pull you out of retirement. It's nice to have a trusted friend who has your back."
He reached into the bush he came across and threw out a man in camo gear, while another one tried to shoot May, as she grabbed the barrel of the gun, spun him around, and threw him back onto the ground.
Another one came out of the blue, and May took quick work of him as well, taking both their guns, and Ward had the other dead to rights. However, more vehicles pulled up to the area, as Ward & May aimed at them.
"Should've taken more guns." Ward exclaimed loudly.
Inside the temple.
"Sir?" Ward's voice buzzed over the radios. "Go." Coulson responded.
"We have a situation." Ward continued.
"Lots of Rebels in this area," Skye said as she heard the cars outside. "And not enough gunfire," Coulson added and turned to the team. "Keep working. Monroes, Zach, we're going out with Agent May and Ward." Coulson went back to the radio. "We're on our way."
The four stepped outside the temple, with multiple men with rifles stood aiming at Ward and May. Ella and Eddie readied their pistols, while Zach's fists glowed, in case he had to fight.
"Buenos dias," Coulson spoke loudly to the troops in Spanish. "Soy el agente Coulson. Estamos aquí por un asunto de seguridad internacional."
*Good morning, I'm Agent Coulson. We are here on a matter of international security.*
"Phillip?" The woman in sunglasses asked as if she knew him. "Camilla?" He responded back as he gestured to the men. "Do you mind?"
"After you?" The woman shrugged. Coulson grinned, as Ward let go of his hostage, May, Eddie and Ella lowered their guns along with the rest of the troops, and Zach powered down.
The woman marched up the stairs to Coulson, and removed her sunglasses. "And now for a proper hello." She had leaned in, and kissed both of his cheeks.
"Comandante." Coulson smiled. "A promotion. Congratulations."
"Three years ago," Camilla corrected. "But thank you."
"Um, not to interrupt, but Coulson, who is this woman?" Zach asked. "May I remind you, we were just engaged with all her troops?"
"Agents, this is comandante Camilla Reyes." Coulson introduced her. "She's with the Policía Militar del Perú. We used to work together back in the day."
May scoffed as she heard that last statement, leaving Ella to glance at her.
"Zach, let the team know everything's okay." Coulson commanded him, as Camilla watched. "You're working with an Avenger?" She smiled. "Climbing up the ranks too, Phillip."
"I was an Agent before I was an Avenger, thank you!" Zach spoke up. He couldn't shake the feeling something was still wrong.
Inside the temple
"Are you seeing this?" Fitz said to the group as Zach came back in. "It's alive..."
"Wha— alive?" Skye exclaimed. "Alive!"
"Well, turns out they're friendlies." Zach told them. "Coulson and their leader go way back. Now what's this about it being alive?"
"It has a functioning power source." Fitz properly clarified.
"Sleepy's reading radionuclides," Simmons said. "But they don't match any known isotope."
"I got temporal matches, but even then, they seem to shift?" Fitz questioned. "Is that even possible?"
"Depends on the shifting of the temporal radio..." Skye made up. "So..."
Everyone in the room eyed her weirdly. "It's totally weird, right?" Skye chuckled nervously at her embarrassment. "I'm gonna check on Coulson..."
"But they're national police, and they've heard of the 0-8-4," Zach advised. "They probably want to protect it, since this area has lots of rebel uprisings."
"Yeah, people are fighting back against the government's mining policies," Skye mentioned. "It's pretty kick-ass."
"Yes, violence, it's kickass," Ward claimed as he walked in, earning him a groan from Nick. However, the temple had just started to crumble apart from the outside.
"Oh, yay, the rebels are here," Zach applauded sarcastically, as the rest of the team scrambled to fit the drones back in the case. However, Fitz wasn't having it with how everyone was putting them in.
"We need a containment case for the 0-8-4!" Simmons yelled.
"There's no time!" Ella yelled back.
"But it has a fluctuating power core —" Fitz argued. "Frequencies way above 10 exahertz."
"Sorry, but I'm gonna need to do this," Zach said as he ran back to the object, and powered his hand to drill through the sediment, and pulled it clean through the wall.
"WHOA, WHOA, WAIT —" Fitz exclaimed. "You did not just pull that out of the wall, what is the matter with you!? Do you realize we do not know the amount of photon emissions coming out of this?!"
"Fitz, my hand has more photon emissions than this thing, now can we please GET OUT OF HERE?!" Zach yelled as he gave him the 0-8-4.
"O-okay, we don't know what will happen when it gets excited!" Fitz argued as he fumbled the 0-8-4 and ran with the rest of the team. Ward pulled out his gun, as Eddie, Ella, & Nick followed after him. However, there was still much gunfire coming to them, so Ward pulled out a metallic staff in Coulson's view. "Tell your men to get down," Coulson warned Camilla quickly.
Camilla yelled her command for them to get down as Ward dove to the ground, got to his feet, and plunged the staff in the ground. The device unlocked a silo in the top, unleashing a smaller capsule out of it.
Ward looked down as the capsule got to at least 10 feet in the air, and it burst with a blue wave of energy, knocking out all the rebels in the area. "My truck!" Camilla yelled. "Vámanos!"
Ward gave the all-clear to the others to head for the cars, but a rebel was still conscious, and ready to shoot, but when he did, he had hit the bulletproof windows of May's car. The team frantically rushed between two cars, May's and Camilla's, and quickly rushed off to the airfield.
----------------------------
THE BUS.
"I gotta say..." Skye said through frantic breath. "I miss my van!"
"Now, what was the problem, Fitz?" Nick asked, as Fitz had mentioned something back in the car, but everyone had told him to stop talking.
Fitz took a couple of breaths to catch up. "As I said before..." he began. "This device has a high-frequency, fluctuating, sub-material compression..."
"Fitz, in English." Ward rudely clarified, as Nick pointed to him. "Yeah, don't listen to him, he's always an asshole." Nick claimed.
"The 084 is fueled by tesseract technology." Fitz put in layman's terms. "Hydra. World War II. Captain America. It's full of lethal amounts of gamma radiation."
"Gamma," Nick repeated. "So what, it's nuclear?"
"It's worse." Zach said. "Much, much worse. Think Hulk... on steroids."
And everyone slowly backed away from the object.
In the Lab
Simmons brought the device in the lab as Skye and Ella stood by nervously at the sidelines. "Not to worry!" She said in a calming tone. "The device is stable. Not that it couldn't explode at any minute, especially if hit with machine gun-fire. But things like this happen from time to time when in the field."
"This thing still scares the shit out of me," Ella said. "But as long as it won't explode, we'll be fine." However, Skye just stood there silently.
"And at first, it's very unpleasant," Simmons continued frantically. "And you regret your decision to leave the lab at all!"
"Are you mental?!" Fitz's voice came from a corner as both he, Ward, Nick and Zach came through to the lab. "I did explain in great detail exactly what I meant, using the Queen's BLOODY ENGLISH!"
"I use normal English," Ward gritted his teeth, as he leaned down to Fitz. "Words like 'duck' and 'run' and 'might blow us to pieces'."
"Oh! Oh, well congratulations, Agent Ward!" Fitz argued, as he assembled a device quickly before he resorted to sarcasm. "You managed to string three words together in a sentence."
"Incredible job, Grant," Nick clapped his hands slowly and sarcastically. "You got the Scottsman to hate you too."
"I'd rather listen to my five year old nephew tell me the entire lore of Avatar: The Last Airbender than this," Zach groaned as the arguing persisted, as Ella turned to him. "You have a nephew?"
"We'll talk later about that."
"Do we have a problem here?" Coulson spoke like a concerned teacher, looking after a fight between two students.
"No, sir." Ward spoke first. "Just working on our communication. Not everyone was prepared for a firefight." Nick shook his head. "Nah, it was more like Ward not knowing British English from American English."
"And also, Ward says that as he's looking towards a hacker, a biochemist and an engineer," Zach pointed out. "Of course, they're not ready! Fitz and Simmons are fresh from the academy, and we literally picked up Skye a few days ago."
Zach turned towards Ward. "I know you're not exactly Mister I'm-A-Member-Of-A-Team, but maybe not try to be such an ass while you're at it?"
"We got out, didn't lose anyone," Coulson said. "Saved a few of theirs — I'd say we did alright. Anything else?"
Skye raised her hand immediately. "Yeah, I have a small question." She began. "Because I've been feeling like the tag-along hayseed rookie, but now I get the sense that Ward doesn't know which one's Simmons and which one's Fitz, and they've seen even less gun fire than me, and he's just been chewed out by an Avenger of all people, and there's so much drama, and I'm no rocket scientist, but is this your first mission together?"
"No! Of course not," Simmons interjected as she leaned on a countertop. "It's our second..."
Skye's eyes widened. "I was your first?" She asked. "That's sweet."
"You're amused?" Eddie asked her, to her shock. "I'm terrified! I am way in over my head," Skye resumed. "but I have been on this team just as long as any of you. I might as well be team captain."
Simmons scoffed. Fitz had an "are-you-serious" look. Coulson just stood still, while his eyes pierced her soul. "J-Just joking." Skye spoke up timidly. "But maybe that's not a bad idea, because these guys don't like each other much."
"More like Ward finds a way to make everyone hate him, is what I'm getting." Ella said.
"This isn't about that!" Ward ignored the comment. "I'm a specialist. Today, I could have eliminated the enemy threat myself if I was working alone, but I had non-combat-ready agents—"
That had caused an uproar between the agents. Everyone started to argue with him.
"Whoa, whoa, wait. You work alone?"
"So typical, who do you think designs your equipment!"
"Or the polymers for your weapon."
"You always have to prove you're an asshole, Ward?"
"Non-Combat-Ready? We were literally with you outside the temple with our weapons!"
"See them proving the point I just made?" Skye whispered to Coulson and Zach.
"You're not wrong," Coulson spoke loudly. "We still need to iron out the jinks. But Ward, you can speak six languages. Simmons, you have two PhDs in fields I can't pronounce. Monroes, you both have done several recon and ops together. Sawyer, you have the best shot out of any of us, and Danvers-Stark, you're our chief alien-slash-history expert. So work it out!"
And with that, Coulson left the lab. Skye let her arms flop down for a moment, and called out, "I-I'm good at stuff too!"
Few Hours later
Eddie sat by a console table, flipping through pages of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. He sat there, unbothered in reading until he felt a presence near him, being Skye with a bottle of liquor. "Are you a fan of dystopian books?" She asked.
"I was undercover at the University of Cambridge as a professor of literature," Eddie answered. "It wasn't my favorite assignment, but I picked up a few good ones." He showed off the cover.
"Bradbury's interesting; a world where books were burned, and knowledge was censored."
Skye made a small smile. "I haven't gotten to talk with you much," She admitted. "All I know was Zach's words of you." Eddie put a bookmark in 451, and placed it down. "Yeah, I wasn't the best person all those years ago..." He said. "At least I'm trying to make up for it."
Skye took the bottle and shook it. "Can I buy you a drink? Maybe I can help you make up for it."
Meanwhile...
Zach remained in his cot, looking through old photos in his photo, stemming back from September 2004 to the present. Something still picked at him though, from a couple months back. That woman he saw when he was looking at the Scepter.
He would have wanted to do research into her, but he couldn't get much from that one vision of her. He tried to do research into his powers as well, but with the Tesseract on Asgard, and the Scepter in S.H.I.E.L.D. storage, it was worthless. The Tesseract and the Scepter were connected somehow, but he couldn't figure out why.
Then, a knock came from outside the cot, as he looked up to find Ella outside. "Are you busy?" Ella asked him.
"Not at all," He answered and ushered her to come in. "So... you have a nephew?" She asked. "Amara had a kid?"
"Oh, yeah, she was married," Zach answered. "Had a son with him, his name was Jason. He died, unfortunately, a couple years back. Amara got back in touch, and I moved with her and her son, Jayden, to New York."
Ella smiled. "Well, that's nice to hear," She said, as she brushed her hair behind her ear. "You still in contact with them?"
"Of course I am," Zach chuckled. "Amara would kill me if I didn't text or call for one day. Boy, you should have seen her when I was electrocuted by Vanko in Monaco."
"Monaco..." Ella repeated. "We always wanted to go there, didn't we?"
"Yeah," Zach replied. "And the time I went, I didn't even know I was being watched by Romanoff." Ella chuckled. "Right, Romanoff!" She laughed. "I heard she was your Supervising Officer?"
"Yeah, she was." Zach answered. "Amongst other things..." Ella's eyes widened. "If you did what I think you did..." Zach nodded. "Don't tell me." Ella responded quickly. "Tell me about ANYTHING but that."
Zach quickly nodded. "Yeah, I'm not like that, nah-uh." Zach said, as he felt the plane turning.
"We're turning, why are we turning..." The two heard Skye from outside.
"We'd be in restricted airspace!" Ella answered her. "We have to follow certain flight patterns."
"I don't know about that," Nick said as he entered the bay and leaned into the cot. "And I'm getting the feeling that these guys aren't as friendly as we thought."
"And for once, we agree on something, Sawyer," Ward said as he entered behind him. Nick revealed his holster, and slowly reached for a knife, while Ward took the bottle of Jack.
The soldiers got up from their match of cards as they rushed to attack the Agents, but Ward got up first to grab their hand to pin to the table, and smash the bottle on their hand.
Eddie got up and rushed down to the lab, knowing there would be soldiers going for Fitz and Simmons, while Ella rushed after him.
Nick spun the knife in his hand, and flung it towards the other soldier, striking him in the shoulder, and he pounced towards him, grabbing the knife, and held the soldier in a headlock, putting him unconscious.
Zach got out of his cot, and quickly ran to the cockpit, but there was already a soldier who had attached a device through it, and had rushed to him to take him down, but Zach grabbed him by the shoulder, threw him up and back against the wall.
Coulson rushed down from his office to find Ward, Nick and Zach breathing heavily, and Camilla was behind him, having shown her true colors. He looked towards the camera in the lab.
A soldier was holding Fitz with a scalpel to his neck, while Simmons had her hands up, and Ella and Eddie had their guns aimed at the soldier.
Another had entered the bay, and held Skye, who was struggling to escape the bound.
Coulson turned back to Camilla, who sat down on the stairs to his office. "We were allies." He lamented to her. "We had history. When did you decide to throw that away?"
Camilla's face dropped the friendly mask she kept on. "As soon as I saw your team."
The Bus — Cargo Hold.
"This is my fault," Fitz affirmed loudly. "Should've learned kung-fu." The team was now held and bound in the Cargo hold. May was unconscious, and every person had handcuffs behind their backs except for Zach.
He was held with every kind of specialized handcuffs and tied to the wall. "Oh, yeah, but I shouldn't have pushed you into the field in the first place!" Simmons told him. "You weren't ready."
"I'll be willing to teach ya, Fitz." Nick remarked. "I consider you a good friend."
"It was my job to make a proper threat assessment." Ward stated.
"This wouldn't have happened if Agent May wasn't on the stick," Skye said as she looked towards the unconscious woman. "She would have busted some Ninja know-how — no offense, Zach." Zach's head leaned against the wall, as he tried to break out of his binds.
"Offense," Zach groaned. "I could have used my powers, but didn't want to risk us dropping out of the sky. Coulson just got this thing, and Fury would be pissed."
"Agent May?" Fitz asked. "No, no, she transferred from administration."
"Well, I've seen her destroy a guy, so..."
"You've heard of the Cavalry?" Eddie asked out of nowhere to Fitz, Simmons and Skye.
"Yeah," answered Simmons. "Ye-Yeah, everyone at the academy takes about st—" Fitz said.
"Who do you think the Cavalry is?" Ella asked them, as the duo's eyes widened. "She's the Cavalry?!" They asked.
"I told you never to call me that." May groaned, very not passed out.
Simmons cheered silently. "Oh, I can't believe it!" She beamed. "Oh, we're sure to get out of here now." She turned back to May. "Um, how do we get out of here?"
May sat up against the wall. "Can't go through the doors," She stated. "They're bolted, tied to the pressurization lines. And we need to unlock Zach from all those cuffs." She turned back to the duo, who stared off. "You two geniuses have nothing?"
Fitz struggled, but turned to May. "Yeah, well, It's hard to concentrate in these intense situations."
"Don't freeze up," Eddie advised. "Take a breath. You don't need to come up with the whole solution. Just part of it."
"Yeah, Pieces solving a puzzle." Skye said.
—------------------------------
Bus Briefing Room
Coulson was held in the briefing room by Reyes against his will. She'd already told him why she still needs him alive, and how he'd already given her the plane. And if she were to open the cargo hold, he'd lost all the lives of his team.
"You knew it was a weapon all along," Coulson said.
"But you got to it first," Reyes confirmed. "I had to play nice." She leaned against the railing of the stairs. "Yes, Couslon, for once, I'm actually ahead of you."
"My country commissioned that weapon decades ago," Reyes said. "After the fall of Hydra, many scientists followed their Nazi friends to hide on this side of the world."
"German engineering," Coulson reiterated.
"The weapon was lost during a clash in the jungle until today." Reyes continued. "With it, we'll end the rebel uprising and finally stabilize my country."
"You mean rule," Coulson answered. "Rule your country."
Reyes shrugged and turned around. "You stay in your borders, I'll stay in mine."
"Those borders are disappearing," Coulson spoke up. "Aliens descended on New York, remember! They don't care whose colors you wear, they just care who's in the way. We should be working together, not fighting."
—--------------------------
Back in the Cargo Hold.
"Well, that's clearly the worst idea we're heard yet." Simmons spoke up as they heard Coulson negotiating with Reyes.
"But it could work?" Skye spoke up.
"Reyes is gonna kill us the minute we land," Nick said. "Regardless, and she'll blame it on rebels. This way, we have a fighting chance, I'll take it. What's first?"
"We can't get upstairs without going in the lab," Fitz said. "And the only way to release the lab doors is from upstairs." Simmons added.
"The first thing is, we're tied to the cargo door," Skye said "and Zach is literally shackled to the wall, so unless you can—"
CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.
"What-the-hell-was-that?" Fitz asked, concerned at the three cracks they just heard.
"Our/their wrists," Ella & Ward answered. "Great job," Zach groaned. "Now can someone get me out of these?"
Moments later...
Two guards walked into the cargo hold, and went to check on the prisoners. However when they checked, there were only five prisoners down, instead of eight.
May grabbed one of the guards in a scissor lock, while Eddie silently knocked the other off his legs, and the two dropped them to the ground, as Ella emerged to grab a gun to shoot off Zach's binds.
"What's next?" May asked.
Minutes later, the agents were unbound and ready to retake the Bus. "Okay, we're sure, right?" Skye asked. "Everyone's sure?"
"We're all on board." Simmons said.
"Yeah, let's do this fast," Fitz replied.
"No turning back, no freezing up." Eddie said.
"Because if we do," Nick continued.
"All of us die." Ward said. "We know." Zach and Ella responded.
However, an engine revved up, and the seven turned to May in the driver's side of a SHIELD SUV.
"You guys talk a lot."
She dove into the car, as everyone moved out of the way and May drove the car straight through the glass doors of the lab.
—-----------------------
Bus Briefing Room.
"SHIELD 6-1-6, we have radar contact. Requesting confirmation on a change in course, over."
Reyes held a gun at Phil's head. "Answer it," She commanded. "Or they all learn what a 30,000 foot drop feels like."
"Agent Coulson, are you there? You have course confirmation. You are cleared direct to the Slingshot."
Unbeknownst to Reyes, Coulson had been working to untie himself, and had caught sight of Fitz's drone, Sneezy, from a nearby corner. Coulson quickly wrapped the ties of his hands and held on to the pole he was previously tied to.
"Agent Coulson? Everything all right up there? We heard you had a little dustup on the ground."
"Yeah, we're good," Coulson lied as Camilla put the gun closer to his head. "It's gonna be blue skies from here on out."
From the cargo hold, Fitz activated the drone to activate the 084, and the team braced themselves, while Zach hovered above, ready to catch anyone if they fall.
The 084 hummed loudly as a blue ring charged repeatedly, and burst with a blue beam, destroying the side of the Bus, and the screens blared with the emergency of a Hull breach.
Camilla and Coulson lost their balance and held on for dear life onto anything they could, as the air threatened to blow them out of the sky.
Back in the Cargo hold, the door locks turned green with a little ding, and opened up. Their plan had worked. "The drop in cabin pressure released the doors!" Simmons said.
"We'll take care of the soldiers," Ward said as he and the others armed themselves, while Zach landed and powered up. "You guys get to the 084."
"And Coulson?" Fitz interjected.
"Let's hope he can handle himself," Eddie answered.
The team slowly moved towards the bay of the Bus, while alarms blared behind them, and soldiers immediately opened fire. "Go!" Ward yelled to Skye and Fitz-Simmons. "Go now! Find the 084!"
The combat-ready agents started to take care of the soldiers, while the scientists and hacker rushed to find the 084. May ran to take back the cockpit, which was being piloted by one of Reyes' men. However, May took them down in seconds flat and regained control of the Bus.
Fitz and Simmons retook the 084, and Skye found the emergency raft. She promptly inflated it, which covered up the massive hole in the plane, which saved Ward and Eddie from flying out of the plane.
"The 084 is cooling and stable." Fitz confirmed. "But we should call HQ, and get it to the Slingshot as soon as possible."
Coulson looked to Reyes, who he had saved from certain death. "Told you they were good."
The Slingshot — Location: Classified.
Upon landing at the Slingshot, Coulson took it on himself to examine his beloved Red Corvette, Lola. Luckily for him, she remained unharmed and untouched.
"Not a scratch," Skye remarked as Zach joined her. "But your plane is totaled. I hope SHIELD insurance covers hijackings."
"Oh, I don't know about insurance," Zach chuckled. "But Fury is gonna be so pissed, he'll show someone his bad eye."
"Probably, under 'incidentals'," Coulson kept his unwavering smile, as the two chuckled. "What exactly am I signing up for?" Skye asked him, as Zach joined the others.
"Like I said —" Coulson responded. "Front row seats to the craziest show on Earth."
"Yeah, but I didn't expect the show to get this crazy this fast," Skye remarked once again. "All for an object you're just gonna destroy." Due to SHIELD procedure, 084s were to be hidden away from anyone or anything.
"Slingshot is protocol," Coulson explained. "A weapon like the 084 is too dangerous for any person or country to have. People like Reyes would always be after it."
"What happened with Reyes anyway?" Skye asked.
"She's being held at a SHIELD detainment facility," Coulson answered. "I expect the Peruvian government will negotiate for her release. She probably won't spend much time in jail."
"No, I mean what happened with you and Reyes?" Skye asked with a mischievous grin. "You guys totally did it back in the day, right?"
"That's classified." Coulson smiled, earning another laugh from Skye. Meanwhile, all the other agents were getting ready to watch the rocket taking the 084 to be destroyed by the Sun. Fitz and Simmons had come down the ramp with a cooler full of drinks and beer.
"We blew up a plane." Fitz exclaimed. "Eat that, Professor Vaughn." Simmons chuckled at Fitz's reaction. "I had a new experience."
"You had a new experience," Fitz clarified for her. "But it was new for all of us."
Eddie, May, Ella and Ward were all talking about how Skye would be more than a consultant, and she could maybe even be an agent herself. May had advised that Eddie be her Supervising Officer.
"Dude," Nick nudged Zach with a smirk, whilst looking towards Fitz and Simmons talking. "I'm so gonna win that bet." Zach smirked back. "Sure you will," he sarcastically chuckled. "Sure you will, Sawyer."
"Hey, come on!" Fitz cried out to everyone. "You guys don't wanna miss this." The rocket was almost ready to blast off, and everyone gathered to watch.
"So, it'll take about 180 days to reach the sun," Fitz explained to everyone as they passed the drinks. "Now, yes, of course, it would have been faster if they'd used hydrogen-fueled APUs, but they're having fun."
"How many of those have you guys had?" Skye asked as she took a beer from Fitz. "Skye!" Jemma spoke through laughs. "It's important when in the field to unwind from time to time."
"Yeah, yeah," Fitz added. "Especially after a hard day of everyone almost dying."
"Which doesn't happen every day, right!" Jemma said. "It's an anomaly – an irregularity." As she said that, Coulson walked up to join them, reminding Simmons that he had in fact died and came back. "Not... the norm."
"Speaking of not the norm," Coulson said with his signature smile. "Whose idea was it to blow a hole in the plane?"
"May said that the doors were tied to the pressurization," Skye explained. "So, I thought—"
"So we thought it was the only way to release them." Jemma clarified.
"Yes, quite genius really,"
"It was everyone's idea, sir," Ward said, as Zach scoffed. "Not my idea," He chuckled. "Reyes' men practically shackled me with everyone SHIELD had to hold me."
"Had to take a couple of rounds to shoot them off," Ella said as she sat down. "Good thing the Avenger here is bulletproof." She chuckled as she pushed him, and Zach laughed as he took a swig of his beer.
"Nice work," Coulson complemented.
"Oh, right, I can't get drunk." Zach said as he put down the drink.
"Wait, you can't get drunk?" Skye asked. "Hell of a superpower if you ask me. No hangovers, no nothing."
"I did once," Zach said. "However, the superhuman metabolism is kicking in a lot more now, so now I can't ever get drunk."
"All clear for lift-off!" A voice shouted through the base.
"Oh, time for blast-off," Fitz exclaimed, and pressed his fingers down on his nose, mimicking a countdown. "Launching... in three!" As he began his own countdown, Simmons laughed as she took a sip of beer.
"...two..."
Before Fitz could get to one, the rocket's engines ignited and it had blast off into the sky with the 084 in it. "The trajectory will take it beyond the Lagrange point so it doesn't hit Herschel." Fitz told everyone.
"And there haven't been any coronal mass ejections, so it shouldn't lose telemetry." Simmons added.
"Guys..." Ward muttered jokingly as he slapped Fitz on the shoulder.. "English!"
However, Skye's phone had gone off, and she turned from the others to see a message from another Rising Tide hacker.
Rising Tide in a holding pattern. Planning to go dark. What is your status?
Skye took a moment to peer at the message.
And she deleted it.
"Really!? Really, Coulson? Six days? It only took you SIX DAYS to take a completely renovated piece of state-of-the-art machinery and turn it into scrap!?"
The Director of SHIELD was beyond pissed. Fury took it upon himself to find Coulson and scold him off for destroying a brand-new mobile base.
"My team acted with my authority," Coulson acknowledged.
"Don't talk to me about authority," Fury barked. "Do you know how much this plane cost? It's got a bar!" Fury said as he put his hands out to it, to mourn the loss of it. "A really nice one." He lamented.
"Talking to me about authority." Fury fumed. "You know, I have the authority to downgrade your ass to a Winnebago!"
"I'm aware of that, sir," Coulson responded.
"Well, I want it fixed, just like you found it," Fury assigned. "So don't have Fitz-Simmons going making modifications, like a-a-a-a... damn fish tank!"
"Yes, Sir."
"And the new girl..." Fury said. "She's a risk."
"Wasn't Danvers-Stark a risk?" Coulson responded, as Fury stared at him with his good eye, knowing he took a close step. "Sorry, sir. I know."
"You're right, though." Fury claimed. "We took one with Zach, we can take another with her.... How's Lola?"
"She's fine, sir," Coulson responded yet again. "Thanks for asking."
"Talking to me about authority..." Fury boasted as he turned and left the plane. As he left, Coulson put his finger to the comm set in his ear.
"Yeah, we're gonna have to kill the fish tank."
(a/n: finally updated again! as you've seen, Agents of Shield is going to be a bit different from the source. Some things will be the same, but some will be different. every AOS chapter will have a message in the caeser cipher, like in the last chapter, in key 12. Think it will be interesting to have :) )
